What's even funnier about this whole thing is all the spite and hate that people are aiming at the hackers, instead of the company that's pretty much left themselves wide open to this.

The hackers are the only ones who actually ensure safe networks, without them constantly testing and breaking so called security systems, all of your data would just be sitting there for the taking by any little asshat.

If you honestly aren't going to blame a multibillion dollar company who is MORE than able to pay for any kind of security it wishes and who keeps a private 'secure' network where it is possible to hack it from a goddamned home games console, then quite frankly you all deserve to lose your shit.. because if you are going to be that dumb then you'd eventually lose it anyway.

Nice of you to have let us all know Sony.... Oh wait! You didn't! Also I don't want free service on a system you can't protect.
Did you even read the motherfucking article? They only discovered it this morning. Christ.
Says who? Sony? Riiiiiight.
I don't even know how to respond to that.

Oh, wait, yes I do. [http://youtu.be/FopyRHHlt3M]
The real issue is that it was hacked at the same time as the PSN... and they've only just noticed. That's just a poor show, and I bet the guys who did this have been laughing at them all this time about it...

Do SOE have anything to do with SCEE? I thought that SCEE was purely Playstation and SOE just collaborated with them occasionally.
they are all owned by Sony and also hosted by them

So? It's obvious that they got a shitload of information to go through. They've got old databases going back to 2007 that they don't even use anymore that they've gotta search. Searching all that shit in the load to see what's missing ain't done overnight.

Awww HELL.

Would have been nice to get a bloody email about this from Sony rather then finding out from a news site. I wasn't too worried about the PSN attack because I've never had a PS3 or PSN account, but I do have a station account... WONDERFUL.

Thank God I didn't update my credit card in February when it expired, I'd already "finished" DCU:O, and didn't enter my new expiry date or CCV, so I should be safe right? They have the card number but can't use it?

Oh FFS Sony!

Wonderful... if I end up with some scum bag stealing my identity I'm so suing Sony.

We also need to realize that Hackers DID NOT DO THIS!! Crackers did, there is a difference we need to realize that.

Thank you for saying what I've been thinking. This line needs to drawn in a thicker and clearer manner.

People are just throwing the term "hacker" around, it is just plain wrong.

For further clarification: Hacker [http://project.cyberpunk.ru/idb/hacker_ethics.html] Ethic [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker_ethic].

Didn't this say it was part of the same attack on the PSN? So it's not really a new attack, just the same attack revealed to be even worse...

Oh crap, I was wishing this wouldn't have happened. If I quit playing Star Wars Galaxies a couple years ago, canceled my subscription and stopped paying, am I still affected? Keep in mind this was years ago, I'm hoping they threw out information since then

Fucking hackers, I think Sony should abort ALL network connection for the time being so they can find a way to fix this and have things settle down.

stupid trolls, don't understand the difference between ripping a company a new one and ripping apart everyone else.
I like how half the people in these threads seem to think all hackers operate by the same standards, as if they're some kind of civil rights organization. GeoHot cracked the PS3 because he liked cracking things, putting control in the hands of the end-user, and possibly pirating games. These people did what they did because they want your fucking credit card info, so they can make money. They don't care about you and have never pretended to. This is like decrying a mugger for not giving his earnings to the poor.

IMHO Anonymous should put aside their differences with Sony and help hunt down these douches.

Think about it, anon is supposed to be all about free exchange of info on the net, and defending the freedom of the net supposedly. These hackers are literally terrorizing ps3 users, not only leaving them afraid of what this system can leak, but pushing them over to help establish a monopoly like state in the online console world as people lose confidence in all but the pay to play xbl network.

I own all three systems and I appreciate the innovation that competition between them brings, but this seems to be disrupting a very delicate balance in that competition. I for one don't think ANY gamer would benefit from Sony pulling out of the console market regardless of what there controller of choice is.

Pfft.

The only real internet security is "A sheep in the herd" behavior. All systems can be hacked, the trick to being safest is to just not draw attention to yourself. Something Sony failed miserably at.

The notice posted to SOE talks about data being obtained in "cyber-attacks" on the company. I read that to suggest that there was more than one -- although they could be counting among that plurality the attack(s) by Anonymous. I wouldn't be surprised if they had no real idea by which cyber-attack or when this latest batch of data was compromised. Which ain't that surprising. Contrary to the opinion of the posters here who think it possible that they can just push the "Cyber-Attack Information" button and get a full spreadsheet printed, it takes time and pains-taking effort to conduct this sort of forensic investigation.

Sony had it comming. The news sucks to hear, but it looks like security was not part of the memo...

I hope a class action lawsuit comes out from this.

Didn't help that their business was all in the news just before this happened. That ain't exactly the way to keep a low profile.

This whole thing seems like some marvelous convenient excuse for Sony to introduce the kind of draconian data retention and invasion of privacy measures they have been wanting to for a while.

Yeah well, in case the haters weren't paying attention, this isn't Sony's fault either. Clearly, the hacker is one of those kinds who wants to be hot shit and takes on big companies to do it. Completely unscrupulous and a waste of talent, really.

Well if you signed up for SOE back in 2007 and live outside of america then maybe they potentially got your data.

Lets look at this for what it truely is, a cracker got into an old database the Sony didnt even realize they had around till they went examining the entire system afer the PSN Debacle, they pulled SOE down so that their couldn't be a hack attack against it while they updated security

also since people don't seem to get it

What was stolen was not information from SOE's main servers, what was stolen was information from an archive server for out of america players that hadn't been updated since 2007. If you live in america this has nothing to do with you, if you live outside america and have changed your credit card in the past 4-5 years then this does not concern you
