ANYONE want to go melee-range and fight zombies? Not afraid of infection, are we?
L4D2 and Dead Rising make great use of melee weapons, stop overthinking it.
Everyone is afraid of infection, story wise, but the big advantages zombies have are numbers, and one small, hard to hit effective target on their bodies. Guns run out of ammo, quickly if you keep missing said effective target, as is very possible in high pressure situations. Melée weapons never run out of ammo, can be very durable if you choose the right one, and make that all important headshot easier.

I watched most of the trailer, and it looks amazing. Any ideas when it may be coming out?
Yes, melee-weapons never run out of ammo, and can do more damage than a single shot from a 9mm.
So what? In the video, she takes several hits from zombies. Even one should be enough to inect her, if it scratches her skin.
I might be "overthinking" it, but I feel these games are supposed to be about Survival horror, not "Elderscrolls with zombies".

Just my thoughts, though.

The eternal problem. This would make it a good horror, but not a good game.

I always thought a biohazard suit system would work well. It takes a certain amount of damage to pierce the suit. After that, one bite and it's over, unless you repair the suit.
On dead island, one scratch may not be enough. The hands are probably covered in normal, human blood, not infected. It's the mouth, and saliva that contains infection. I suppose enough hits kill you through bodily harm, and if you are grabbed and don't shake em off in time, you're bitten and killed?

Biohazard-suits aren't exactly made for mobility, though. Good luck running from a zombie in it, heh. But full kevlar, hardened clothes would probably do the trick. Then you just have to stay away from them crowding you.
Still, I find it rather laughable.."She's a business-woman, and she's still wearing her heels". Eh? Isn't that the FIRST THING any sensible person would throw away? High heels while running and fighting?
This isn't Mortal Kombat.

(also the first bit with the gun..it looked like Black Ops)
WOW, WOW, WOW! That is taking it a bit too far sister! Ok sure it has crafting but hey! More weapons = double the fun! Also, 4 player co-op... How exactly is that like Left 4 dead? After all it's in a big open environment and I can see why you'd think it was crafted by Bethesda... Wait isn't that a compliment!? But why on earth in mother of super mega death christ 2000 BC 4.0 beta would you think it looks like black ops!? Why compare a nice zombie shooter with free-roam with the disgusting scythe hole ridden piece of ass that's call of duty: black ops!? Lots of games have first person shooting in them but you thought the game was so bad that you had to compare it black ops? You aren't mental!

Well melee weapons do run out of "ammo" They wear and tear and break! And as a commenter said before zombies are an enemy in gaming that just doesn't surprise us anymore. You're in a holiday resort fending off zombies! if it were survival horror the game would most likely have to feature linear hallways and have people with horrible dialogue saying such things as "have you seen a little girl?" over and over again. Also goddamn does the escapist have some sort of hate for the elderscrolls or have to convince themselves that it's a ripoff? It's open world yes, and in first person but that doesn't make it seem like the elder scrolls and it actually seems like a compliment! But yes like I was saying you're going to be facing lots of zombies, it's action driven for reasons of its own. Also, if you know survival horror you can tell that all main heroes = immune to infection. Afterall it would be tedious if you got hit once and it said "opps you just got infected! complete the game with only 1 minute to live... BYE!" just think about that sort of formula in a 28 weeks later game! -bitten- " You have been infe- *DEAD*

I'm certain you could develop a game that doesn't break flow because you have been infected. In the classic movies, you turn into a zombie rather slowly. Not right away. So what preventsthe game from saying "You've been infected! Search out aid before you turn!" and have you do something to get some sort of vaccine.
Just have something that makes the game more than zombie-splatter-hack-n'-slash with RP elements. The zombies should be feared (did you read the article on the Escapist a month ago about the gamering industry failing "Zombie school"? It's pretty interesting), so there should be some sort of consequence for getting hit, or facing several of them.
Still, a game can be good if it's Hack N' Slash. It can be fun and inspiring even if the zombies are a fucking joke.
I guess I'm just not impressed by the graphics, the uncanny-valley residents, the physics engine or the FPS-melee combat (Yes, I loved Morrowind, but after it, I tired of FPS-melee, and it hasn't evolved past that since in my opinion).

That first line there... Really? The graphics look as far as i'm concerned: *great!* Besides graphics aren't everything and infact are not as important as a story narrative, etc.

You don't have to use melee combat, you can use guns, though hard to find and ammo is in short supply that adds to your survival element. I guess they went for a if you were in this position you would be seeing probably this with just less irritating shaky camera motions.

Also fps hack and slash... there is some strategy too it and I enjoy it being in first person though I do believe they should have a third person option too for those who enjoy it in a third person perspective. Also, you can kick. so they updated well with that. Don't fix whats not broken.

True, maybe a great story can save it? I just really doubt it. There have been so many recent "Survival horror"-games, and most of them have had really crappy story. Once again, IMHO.
I guess I would feel more immersed if I wasn't thinking "Oh, an Elderscrolls zombie-mod!" when watching the vid.

Sadly your "fragile" baseball bat somehow can set off a propane tank (I'm pretty sure those are supposed to be tougher than that) and somehow still be in one piece after the explosion. So that feature's pretty much rubbish. =p

..*Watched whole video*

You can do these following..
- Jump back from a zombie
- Spartan kick a zombie
- Punch a zombie in the face if it tries to bite you
- Drive a car over zombies
- Rely on mostly melee
- Character acts like she/he's scared, but after awhile they get tough
- Make your own weapons

.. ..I must have this game
You forgot the Diablo-style weapons.

Looks ok. Still not that impressed. Hate the addition of the exploding and ram zombies. Takes the reality out of it, would prefer a more Dead Rising on an island with out the rubbish that that game had. Just another zombie game like all the others just with nicer graphics. Will wait to see more info for the game, but for now its a rent only.
Dead Rising had exploding zombies. Where have you been? The exploding zombies also shot gas crap at you. Hated them.

I cannot fucking wait for this.
There was only one part of this trailer I didn't like, and that would be that the character is wearing heels. When you need to run and kick, why the fuck would you wear heels of all things.
I love the Diablo-style weapon system, and the upgrading looks neat. Seems a great, realistic game crossed with some of the Dead Rising-style fun.
this
all of it, i love it when weapons have ridiculous names that still manage to give you an idea of what they do.
and yes, please give that girl the option to put on some proper footwear.

Where the hell is my dark, atmospheric zombie game?!

Damn you all, I hope you get infected with the T virus!

Oh well, the bastard child of Left 4 Dead and Dead Rising will have some fans I guess.

EDIT: Why can't I get a bastard child of Amnesia and Resident Evil???
I would love that bastard child like it was my own.

Anyways, the only thing that impresses me in this trailer is the look of the island.

I still say the game is going to be sub par other than that. The game still needs to decide whether it's serious (bad idea in my opinion) or funny, the combat looks sluggish, the fatigue bar in the middle of the screen is ugly and distracting, the idea that the guy is that worried about fighting off too many zombies because of his fatigue just sounds annoying, and the voice acting and writing is some of the worst I've heard in a long time ("I set you free"? Really?)

Not only that, how in the hell does throwing a bat at a gas canister cause it too explode? At least it's kind of more realistic for it to happen when it's shot...

Eh I don't know if I'd like this game exactly; I'm still hunting for a game that covers the emotional aspects of the zombie apocolypse. Things like the fact you are killing possibly hundreds of people who were just like you; what that would do to a person. Things like knowing that you're likely not going to make it out of there; a helplessness of the protagonist.

This game looks interesting, don't get me wrong, but it won't be the kind of interesting that I'm looking for in a zombie game.
You probably won't find such a game for a long time.

I have to say, when I saw that the other day, I was pretty disappointed.

I guess I'm not a fan of 'Borderlands: Melee Edition', with the 'LOLelectric macheteXD' and the 'EPIC RAGE MODE so randum!XD'.

I'm just waiting for Dead State [http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/08/25/a-blood-red-state-dead-state-revealed/], you know, a game based around the actual zombie genre.
