If you voted for Obama or you're a Muslim, you better not try to learn gun safety in Texas

If I was living in Texas (thank god im not!) and if I wasnt scared of being shot by these nuts, I would be very tempted to jump into the class, do well, make some friends, be a bro, drink a few beers with them, and then one evening, when everyone thinks im ok, I would drop the bombshell and casually remark im an athiest. Maybe gay to, just for the lolz.

Like I said, it would probably get me killed but the look on these guys faces would be priceless.

But the story doesnt surprise me at all. Everyone knows that Texas are a bunch of "We dont like strangers around here" folk.
Indeed, and we all know the Germans wear lederhosen, and all Dutch people smoke weed and are devoutly puritanical at the same time!

It really isn't, sorry.

If you dont already know I tend to side against whatever the pulse of the thread is whenever the thread becomes blatantly one sided.
Which is fine, if you're capable of playing Devil's Advocate. So far, you're not doing a good job.

Wheres the discussion value if everyone agrees?
Come up with a point worth discussing, then.

Now my question is, Is it even possible to become tolerant to one position without first becoming intolerant to another? So in essence, is there even such a thing as "tolerance"?
Sure there is. You're taking awful liberties here. I'm not even sure there's discussion value to this question, simply because it's based on a shoddy statement. Would you care to try for something that's a little more....I don't know...Grounded?
Discussion: should it be legal for him to do this? There. Discussion value.
and its not
its not even a matter of it being questionable it just flat out violates the law

the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination and guarantees all persons the right to ?full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, and accommodations of any place of public accommodation, without discrimination or segregation on the grounds of race, color, religion or national origin.?

1. It's a hypothetical.

2. The CRA doesn't apply to a private businesses, as above and as is the claim by proponents.

3. however, it is against state policy for a certified instructor to discriminate. Just know why he doesn't have the right.

And, of course, feel free to answer his question regarding the hypothetical right.

just some of my favorite passages from the quran:
"Make war on the infidels living in your neighborhood." Koran 9:123

"Fight and slay the Non-believers wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem of war" - Koran 9:05
"When opportunity arises, kill the infidels wherever you catch them." Koran 9:5

"Any religion other than Islam is not acceptable." Koran 3:85

"The Jews and the Christians are perverts; fight them." Koran 9:30

"Maim and crucify the infidels if they criticize Islam" Koran 5:33

"Punish the unbelievers with garments of fire, hooked iron rods, boiling water; melt their skin and bellies." Koran 22:19

"They shall have a curse on them: whenever they are found, they shall be seized and slain without mercy" - Koran 33:061

"Muslims must not take the infidels as friends." Koran 3:28

"Terrorize and behead those who believe in scriptures other than the Qur?an." Koran 8:12

"Muslims must muster all weapons to terrorize the infidels." Koran 8:60

but remember kids Islam is a religion of peace!
also the hypocrisy of accusing this guy of discrimination/stereotyping and then proceeding to label everyone from Texas and/or the U.S a bigot and a moron seems to escape you

I am not surprised, to be honest, it's bloody fucking Texas, for goodness' sake! What did you expect? This is arguably the worst state in America, in terms of IQ. People there are just mentally handicapped, and there's a desease that forces them to live as if they're still in the 18th century. Don't bother.

A federal firearms instructor shall be considered according to federal law to be a public business. Because they issues FFA(Federal Firearms) licenses, they're not private businesses, ergo the CRA does apply.

Being conservative myself I find it insulting that we are generalized like that (And that's being bigotry lol)
Any and all people can be bigotry in many different ways, like many (not all) wall street protesters that have nothing better to do but yell their hatred to Jews and so forth, and if you want to go the international way, take a look at what happens to gays in the Middle East.... they are killed on sight and anyone protesting meet lethal force, then you have the politically correct crowd that subjugate all people with labels, a very good friend of mine that happened to be black would often get very pissed off being called African American, he would always say back "I am not African American, I am an American get it right." yet people b!t¢h about only American Conservatives being intolerant.

I just find that funny.

Frankly I see enough stories like this that I gave up trying to label anyone as an enemy. Humans. suck. Doesn't matter if it's texas, new york, England, japan, or the Sahara desert. Humans. SUCK. End of story.

You know, it's stories like this that REALLY strain my faith in humanity:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/31/crockett-keller-texas-gun-liberals-muslims_n_1064184.html?icid=maing-grid7%7Cmain5%7Cdl1%7Csec1_lnk3%7C109052

The short version is that this gun instructor in Texas has a radio advertisement stating that "If you are a socialist liberal and/or voted for the current campaigner-in-chief, please do not take this class," and "You have already proven that you cannot make a knowledgeable and prudent decision as required under the law."

But it gets better. He also said "Also, if you are a non-Christian Arab or Muslim, I will not teach you the class. Once again, with no shame; I am Crockett Keller ... thank you and God bless America,". The best part? Apparently, he's been receiving calls from locals in SUPPORT of this.

No words, folks. No words.
So he's pretty much saying what every redneck gun instructor wants to say in the first place? This isn't anything new....

I might be Canadian, but I've got friends in Texas. Liberal, free-thinking, Obama-supporting friends who don't have jack shit against Muslims, and who in fact recognize that derpitude is something you can find as much in Christians as in Muslims. Just as you've got your fear-mongering and hate-filled supposed "true Christians", you've also got your fear-mongering and hate-filled "soldiers for the Jihad".

That's what people need to learn. Stupidity knows no country, ideology or religion. Stupidity can be found everywhere. I've worked with some Muslims in the past and have been generally lucky enough to end up with the tolerant ones, who don't give a crap about their women showing their faces in public and who consider fatwas to basically be the divine right to protest - not kill whoever disagrees with them.

I sometimes wish there was a way to pick people like that Keller person and drop them in a peaceful Muslim country where they'd be the unarmed minority. It would account for some wonderful sensitivity training, and their lack of easily abused defensive measures would make sure they can't just turtle in their beliefs.

Yeah, okay, fine. Just to clear a few things up: I didn't say everyone in Texas was a complete and utter moron, not fit to even zip-up their hilarious, pathetic-looking boots. I mean MOST people, and especially the ones born before the 1990's, and significantly before the growth of the net. And second of all, I am quick to judge because stories like these pop-up from Texas all the bloody time. And yeah, sure, you'll say 'well it's not only Texas that produces such obtuse scenarios' - yes, it's not, but it's mostly Texas. And bearing in mind the awful things I heard, about how Texans replaced their history books with 'slightly modified' versions, where they include Christian 'patrons' and such... Well that just makes me sick!

And yes, you're right - HUMANS DO, INDEED, SUCK. That's not the question. The qestion is WHERE/WHEN they suck THE MOST. ANd your oh-so-beloved country (yeah, you wish! Don't you?) state is a pretty hot contender for that luxurious title.

Change that to "Only in Texas." Here in the mid-west we're at least a little more sensible. Mostly.
It must indeed suck that a few (or many) have to fuck up America's name.

I think the only country in Europe that gets the official ''european'' stamp is France.
At least that's the vibe I get from watching American TV.

I would like to chime in here as a progressive American.

1. For those asking if this discrimination is illegal; if his class/business is privately owned and funded, he can run it any way he wants. Just like how a bartender in America can refuse to serve someone/kick someone out simply for wearing a hat. It's a private business. If a muslim wants to learn gun safety, he can take a state funded/sponsored safety class, where discrimination WOULD be illegal.

2. Keep in mind that this is a radio commercial. Radio commercials in America are designed to get your attention by ANY means nesccesary. True, that can be said for radio commercials anywhere, but American radio has a tone to it that not everyone gets all the time. By making his commercial as controversial as possible, he has attracted media attention, in addition to getting the listener to do a double-take. The commercial has succeeded. The style used in his add is an over-the-top delivery common with shock jocks and and internet bloggers. For those of you who played GTA 4, remember the super-conservative talk radio station host, who would say things like, "salute that man and shove a slice of apple pie up his ass for being a model American!"? Yes, that guy was rediculous and unrealistic....but that's what made him hysterical and fun to listen to.

3. Where I disagree with this man: The part about denying his services to liberals is (in America) HYSTERICAL. I know it sounds strange when you try to explain this kind of humor to foreigners; it's like when I watch British comedy(which I love). I get MOST of the jokes, but I don't get ALL of them. Trust me on this one, this specific part is quite funny.

The part about refusing to teach non-Christians and Muslims. This, I feel is an overstep. Yes, he got attention for it, and probably this is the ONLY part that's getting him the attention. I disagree with this. Besides, how's he really going to know if someone's Muslim? People can always lie anyway. remember this is a COMMERCIAL, it's sole purpose is to get your attention and make you remember the business. It has succeeded.

To reply to some quotes from Valagetti:

Whats wrong with being non-christian? Absolutely nothing my man!

Whats wrong with Muslims and Arabs (they have awesome rocking beards!) Again, nothing. I have 2 Arab friends myself, 1 Muslim, 1 Atheist.

Whats wrong with socialism? This is the kicker. We Americans don't like the concept. Not because we don't want to help less fortunate people, but because we prefer the idea that a man WORKS and EARNS his way through his life, rather than being handed someone else's money for doing absolutely nothing. I do not wish to start a flame war here. But again, though I've lived in Europe and loved it very much, and want to go back, and have a pretty open world view...I am still an American, and the concept of socialism does not sit well with me, as with most Americans.

One thing that many people forget is that Texas is NOT representative of the United States. Nor is California or New York, for the other extreme end of various political idiocies.

My home state does not have this problem at all. The MOST conservative county in Michigan, Oakland County, has very little racism and religious fundamentalism. We're gun nuts, sure, but we're far too relaxed to give a damn about race or religion like this.

In fact, although most of Michigan claims to be Catholic, I would estimate that a mere 20% of Christians in Michigan practice in any real way, and that about half couldn't be called Catholic but simply claim the title because of their upbringing. Most of my friends admit to not being Christian, and even most adults I know are pretty secular.

Feels good to be in a non-backwards state. Our economic situation might suck, but at least we aren't intolerant. Mostly.

yes the CRA apply to businesses that offers goods
a CWP in this case is no diffident than a plate of food provided you have the money and meet the states quantification(to my knowledge the state dose not require you to be white, Christian, or Republican to own a CWP).
he is offering this service to anyone walking into the store at the start time(meets the quantification of a public business space at that point and the CRA applies). He is breaking the law at that point he refuses service base on "arbitrary" believes.
again its not even a question at that point he is breaking the law

as for the hypothetical
No there will never be tolerance. However, hate someone base on there charter not for the color of there skin.

America nothing, Texas is a different place completely. Their governors campaign on secession at least every other term and it was a country of it's own until they got absorbed after begging the US for protection from Mexico.

It is :)
And usually talking like that would make you a social pariah too.
It's only illegal for you to discriminate in decisions about hiring and a very limited number of private services, like who to rent or sell a home to.

Of course, the Huffington Post's history of fabricating stories and/or leaving out pertinent information TOTALLY makes them a credible source for this. Knowing how they work, the man probably just had up a sign that said "Must be able to present valid photo ID and submit to a background check." And the "Only in America" crap really needs to stop, especially when based on a paper that's only not considered a tabloid because it supports a political party's position.
