An artifact....cabinet. I will admit, I was a bit disapointed too. Though it is not just a cabinet! It is a cabinet...with a cabinet carved on it!
It just occurred to mean to mention plane packed [http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Planepacked], which takes these self-referencing engravings to a ridiculous degree.

Chapter 26: From the journal of Stinthad Kekimtobul

6th Limestone, 1052, Early Autumn

Oh god oh god oh god oh god oh god.

Okay, okay. Calm down Stinthad, go back to your happy place. You're sitting next to a river. Mules are grazing on the grass near the shore. You're sipping a freshly brewed glass of pickle berry wine, watching hippos swim through the water. Cute little demon rats are riding on the elephants, nibbling on chunks of cheese. Yeah, this is nice and calming...

Okay, so some farmer ran up from the crypt, and he was shouting about the invading creature. It may be a bit more serious than I originally thought. He wasn't exactly clear, but apparently it's some enormous monster with long spiked tentacles and a massive eye.

And it's strangling a woodcutter.

Kraken's notes: Deep krakens are a lot like regular cave krakens. They can be dangerous and aggressive, but lacking any type of natural protection means they are vulnerable to most attacks. Unlike the cave kraken, deep krakens have a way of compensating for this; by being massive.

Deep krakens tower over dwarves, being over 6 times their size. They fight much like regular cave krakens, but due to their size their attacks are far more deadly. And being much larger than dwarves, they view them as nothing more than easy prey. Expect danger if they have any way of accessing your fort, particularly by water due to their incredible swimming skills.

No, no, don't panic. I'm sure we'll all be fine. The Immortal Rags have dealt with worse.....probably. Everything is going to be fine....

7th Limestone, 1052, Early Autumn

OH GOD EVERYTHING IS NOT FINE!!!

7th Limestone, 1052, Early Autumn

Please, stop going down there! Can you not here the screams of the wounded?! Do you not hear the chilling roar of that foul beast?!? You're all going to die if you don't run!

7th Limestone, 1052, Early Autumn

WHY WON'T YOU LISTEN TO ME?!?!

7th Limestone, 1052, Early Autumn

Why are you sleeping?!?! Don't sleep! There's a monster tearing dwarf's limbs off! KILL IT!!!

8th Limestone, 1052, Early Autumn

Uh, you know what we should probably build?

A hospital. Like, right now.

Stonesense Version [http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/9554/hospitalsense.png]

9th Limestone, 1052, Early Autumn

Oh thank you so much Alath. If I could build a giant monument dedicated to your power, I would. But right now I have the matter of dealing with the wounded and deceased. Apparently two dwarves succumbed to the deep kraken's rampage.

But that doesn't mean the others are exactly doing well. We really need to get that hospital finished.

13th Limestone, 1052, Early Autumn

Jeez, is nobody going to help this poor man? He's been lying on the ground ever since the deep kraken attacked him, and apparently nobody's bothered to even carry him back to the surface! It's much more important to tend to the plump helmets than aid the man bleeding out on top of them, evidently.

I suppose if you want something done, you have to do it yourself.

16th Limestone, 1052, Early Autumn

Well I managed to find poor Erush a bed to rest in. It will have to do for now. He seems comfortable enough, though that might just be because he's unconscious from blood loss. I asked the other dwarves if any of them had any medical skills, but of course nobody here does. Without a proper doctor here, Erush could easily die due to his injuries.

But that won't stop me from trying to save him! I can't just sit by and do nothing! Let's see, he's missing his foot, I know that much. So I guess I should, uh....reattach it? Yeah, that might work. Where is it anyways? I hope the deep kraken didn't eat it.

20th Limestone, 1052, Early Autumn

Alright, I can't find Erush's foot anywhere so I guess I have to give up on that plan. I noticed that his mouth is in pretty bad shape. I should probably do something about that.

I really hope the next caravan has some medical textbooks or something. I have no fucking clue about what I'm doing, which doesn't bode well for Erush.

Migrants? Now? Well, I guess that's okay. I mean, it's not like were' running low on supplies-

What the....fuck.

BEER CON 3!

Also, Erush is going to die of infection. Calling it now. This is why I like some medical skills on the starting 7.

Actually, not neccessarily. It depends on if the river and cave water counts as salty. If so, he either needs to brew a whole lot or build a desalanization machine. He should do the second one even if he brews a lot; wounded only drink water.

I don't think it does at the moment, but either way not having booze is really annoying. I was wondering why the hell the cooks weren't brewing more, only to find that they've apparently filled almost every single barrel with random animal extracts such as elk bird fat or other shit like that I don't actually need. So I need to build more barrels, which will then be filled with more crap, which will then take up room in the stockpile, which will then need to be extended to accommodate more barrels, which will still be filled with more crap rather than booze and GAH!

The stockpile screen lets you set a certain number of barrels to be kept in reserve instead of being used to store stuff, although that might not quite work in this particular case.

I just wanted to say that I've started my first fortress, and my bookkeeper(!) was taken by a fey mood. He claimed a metalsmith (which I had to build first) and demanded metal bars (which I had to figure out how to make). I finally got him some iron just a moment ago, and I'll report back on what comes of it.

Update: It's a cup.

Of course because dwarves drink booze straight from the barrel, such a cup is useless.

Artifacts range from awesome to pathetic, but at least they all increase fortress value.

Every time I encounter Dwarf Fortress, it makes me incredibly sad. I love the game dearly, but only because I read all these stories about it, and it makes me happy.

Of course, every time I actually load up the game and try to play it, it's like trying to earn a fucking degree in computing. I'd rather concentrate on my History degree than have to figure this stuff out. What DF needs is a goddamn engine, or at least some easy way to approach it, or a tutorial.

Yes, I have read the wiki. No, it didn't help much. It sets me up, but beyond that, it's just a headache to understand.

Yeah, to be perfectly honest Dwarf Fortress is really hard to learn regardless of the resources at your disposal. God help you if you try to learn it without using the forums and wiki, as you are fucked. There is an ingame tutorial section, but it doesn't really help much.

That's the unfortunate thing about DF; it's hard to explain it in text, but its even harder to explain it though a picture if you're not familiar with the game. Hence there's really no good way to teach it. I do think all the time I had to invest in learning it was worth it, but if you don't have a substantial amount of time to stink into it at first it's going to be a pain, if not downright impossible, to understand.

Still, the fact that I consider DF to be an amazing game despite this is a testament to just how good it really is.

What I found was that I really just needed to know how to farm, brew, mine and create stockpiles. Everything else can be figured out later.

Yeah, thats pretty much what I thought. you open it up and have noooo idea what to do right? I recommended a tutorial further back that tells you everything down to the hotkeys,it is outdated but the only thing I've noticed so far has changed was farming.I'll post the link again i guess

Trust me and just download the world and follow what he says and you"ll be playing in no time.

I like Elves. They traded me a Tame Tiger, which I placed near my nursery.

Turns out the Kobold Baby Snatchers weren't even noticed until one of the kids was found with a kobold thigh.

My tolerance of elves depends entirely on what they bring me. For example, in Townbrush that brought me giant eagles in the frist two years. I was ready to shower them with gifts, provided they kept bringing me more eagles. Instead, they brought groundhogs. I never got another eagle, and as a result I had no qualms about using elven merchants as target practice.

Amusingly, for all their environmental bullshit elves will still sometimes bring tigermen. Due to tigermen being sapient, this is the equivalent of slave trading. They have fucked up morals.

Kobold's don't steal children. Only goblins do that.

Chapter 27: From the journal of Stinthad Kekimtobul

__________________________________________________

21st Limestone, 1052, Early Autumn

Okay, from what I can tell there are about 9 new migrants. I suppose that's manageable. Though I'm not sure I can do anything about the lack of booze. I've told the cooks to brew more, but apparently they can't. Why? Because we don't have any empty barrels. Now, one quick glance at the food stockpile reveals that we have a ton of barrels, however rather than being filled with delicious booze they are instead stuffed with other stuff, such as the fat of various animals.

The fine cuisine of Reveredtour. You can really feel it clog up your arteries. Regardless, I've put in the order for more barrels to be built, but I doubt a substantial amount of them can be constructed before the booze runs out. We'll just have to make do with drinking....water for the next few weeks. Ugh.

22nd Limestone, 1052, Early Autumn

I saw the human merchants leaving today. I had completely forgotten about them due to the chaos of the deep kraken attack. Fortunately, Goden told me she had taken the initiative to trade with them while I was busy. She acquired a decent number of bronze weapons for the soldiers, though unfortunately lacked the foresight to purchase more booze. I can't really fault her though, as trading is supposed to be my responsibility.

25th Limestone, 1052, Early Autumn

I found an old medical textbook inside the wagon yesterday. It's a bit outdated, apparently having been written by the capital's chief medical dwarf....in 154. But I suppose it's better than nothing! Following it's advice, I sutured Erush's mouth wound, and I'm proud to say it worked perfectly!

At least I hope it did. Erush woke up during the middle, which resulted in him messing up my attempted surgery. Luckily, Lorbam was able to hold him down until I completed the procedure. I hope he didn't hurt Erush in the process.

Boy, this doctor stuff sure is hard!

2nd Sandstone, 1052, Mid-Autumn

I was trying to find someone to help us cage the hippos, but nobody seemed to be willing to serve as "bait". I mean come on, it's not that dangerous. I'm 99% sure the hippos won't be able to attack them without getting caught in a cage. It's a flawless plan!

However it doesn't matter now, since I finally found a volunteer! Well, sort of. I was asking some of the soldiers if they wanted to try, but Momuz said that they had to focus on training. That's when Erithidok chimed in, claiming that the elves would be able to catch the hippos without any trouble. Momuz apparently took offense to this, and ordered Erithidok to stand near the river. His says that if she's going to praise the elves so much, she has to prove that their tactics actually work. If she can't convince the hippos to walk into our cage traps though peaceful measures, she'll be ordered to fire at them with the crossbow I had built. Erithidok agreed, but with obvious hesitation. She seems to crack easily under pressure. Oh well, I suppose it doesn't matter. We're finally going to catch some hippos!

6th Sandstone, 1052, Mid-Autumn

Well, Erithidok just went out to catch the hippos. I'm so excited, it's almost tempting to follow her and see what happens! That would probably make her nervous though, so I'll just stay here. I'm sure she will do fine.

6th Sandstone, 1052, Mid-Autumn

Oh dear. It seems that I forgot to take in some external factors when planning the H.F.S. Mainly, the presence of some animal that does see the bait dwarf as food. This isn't going so well.

Kraken's notes: As the name suggests, giant leopards are merely larger versions of their smaller cousins. They dwell only in savage areas, and like most large creatures are solitary hunters. The increased size of the giant leopard results in it being much more powerful. It also means that it views dwarves as food, being almost twice their size. They usually don't attack groups of dwarves, but isolated workers are easy prey for them.

Stinthad: "Momuz! Erithidok ran into a problem!"
Momuz: "Let me guess; she fell into the river and is being torn apart by angry hippos."
Stinthad: "No, she-"
Momuz: "Then she fell into the river and drowned on her own."
Stinthad: "No! She's been attacked by a giant leopard!"
Momuz: "What, that's it? Well, how long did it take her to kill it?"

Stinthad: "Um, she didn't kill it. Rather, it's killing her."
Momuz: "Oh come on, she's been training for months! If she can't handle some overgrown cat she can get her head torn off for all I care."
Stinthad: "Momuz please!"
Momuz: "Fine, but I still think this is a waste of my time. That giant leopard would probably be more useful than her anyways."

Okay Stinthad, calm down. Don't worry. I'm sure Erithidok will be fine. Just think about happy thoughts instead of the giant leopard tearing her face off.

6th Sandstone, 1052, Mid-Autumn

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

7th Sandstone, 1052, Mid-Autumn

Well...at least Alath killed the leopard....but....Erithidok is still dead! I can't do anything right!

15th Sandstone, 1052, Mid-Autumn

I have to admit, I was horribly depressed after the death of Erithidok. Once again a dwarf had died because of one of my stupid plans. I was almost ready to hand leadership back over to Goden. But then I heard a familiar scratching sound, one of hundreds of legs rubbing against the sides of a cage. It was a sound I hadn't heard since we left the capital. I thought I must be imagining it, but it was real! I can't believe somebody didn't tell me sooner!

We caught a voracious cave crawler! How could anyone be upset when we have an adorable pet cave crawler?!?

From the 1d4chan article for this game:

"Fuck cats. Cats suck. Though not the unholy spawn of satan they once were (much like elephants), you must beware of cats, for if they are left unchecked, they will surely outbreed your dorfs. (Leading to catsiphyxiation.)"

I'm having the same barrel problem in my fort, but with plump helmets. Purple mushrooms everywhere...
