Yeah, that officer is from PA

OT: This amazing, I can't believe it worked that fast. It must be magic.

I'm afraid to click the video, it looks gross.

But really? Spraypainting your skin back on? Dwarf Fortress absolutely needs this.
Only if you want a more efficient way to wear the skins of your enemies or something. Dwarves don't need a medigun. Or healing. They'll just walk/drink it off.
Clearly, you've never been affected by Kitten Rot.

All their skin rots off, and there's not a thing you can do except waste tons of soap.
Clearly, you weren't using enough alcohol to avoid this in the first place.

Doctors? Pah. Who needs them? These are dwarves. Even their immune systems are bearded.
SUCK IT, FIRE. YOUR REIGN OF TERROR IS OVER.
In all honesty, this is really amazing. The guy in the video looks as if nothing happened to him! Maybe it's my personal disdain for burning (no one vaguely likes it, but I hate it more than others), but this is one of the most amazing things I've seen in the past week.
Well played, Gerlach. Well played indeed.

What can I say? I experience "fun" on a regular basis.

There is a wide variety of stem cells, obtaining skin cells is no problem as we will always have those, but for limbs/organs you need to obtain stem cells from a fetus, and what such action would do to you is a wild guess (you may very well end up without a limb), for the most part stem cell research is still mostly trial and error.

But this is pretty damn awesome, this will bring skin repair to a whole different level.
Actually, no. They don't need to come from a fetus, they need to act as though they were embryonic. While, yes, that does mean that the easiest and earliest way to find such cells is to get them from embryos, they no longer have to: science has fixed that as well.

In March, 2009 [http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2009/03/30/f-science-stem-cell.html], Dr. Andras Nagy discovered a way to turn adult human skin cells into embryonic-like cells. That means that the doctors would use the patient's own cells to fix problems, thus negating most chances of rejection. The likelihood you'd end up without a limb from such a procedure is minimal -- extremely lower than before, when said procedure would have been done with cells obtained from a human fetus.

How did he (and the other researchers) do it? Via a string of mobile DNA, the researchers inserted four genes into a chromosome. These genes triggered a reaction that caused the cells to revert back to an embryonic-like state. They then had to remove the four genes again, as they are recognized to be strong enough and powerful enough to cause cancer if they are left in the cell.

It's actually quite amazing what science can do.

.
More on topic to the article: When they said "if you can deal with the fact that it's mirrored," I didn't expect the video to actually have been... mirror image to the original video. I thought it had meant it was mirrored in the sense that it was a copy that was not the original. An interesting surprise, no doubt. Naturally, it only affected the names displayed, so not too noticeable.

Yay science!

Anyone else think the guy who invented it looks like an Arabic Tony Stark?

OT: That is one super invention, much credit to the inventor :) Can't wait to set my self on fire on friday and be fine for work on monday XD

EDIT: Also saw a story in the paper today regarding a full colour internal body scanner that is based on gaming tech and operated with a laptop and 360 pad. Medicines doing very well at the mo.

Why would they? That's a rather random sentiment you have there.

Everyone does.

'Course, after enough plump helmet wine, you forget all about it.

Because it seems that the words "Stem Cells," or alternatively, "Stem Cell Research" seems to be on the hot list of every morally right individual who wishes to slam scientific progress back to the dark ages.

That said, the optimistic side of me is saying that now that we have a working example that can show people first hand the benefits of this science, they might not have much ground to stand on and heck, it might even cool their heels on other advances. However the fact remains that almost every great leap civilization has made has had it's share of detractors trying esperately to bring it down regardless of the potential outcome.

EDIT: Wow, major comprehension fail there. Let me try again.

Do you know WHY the religious right are mad at stem cell research? Because none of them would oppose this.

this...wow. This is incredible! I wonder if it could get rid of scars? Furthermore, when can I expect to see it in my local hospital?

I bet the person who invented this is going to be sitting on a lot of money very soon...

This is brilliant. To believe how far we have come. This can almost completely eliminate the skin grafting procedure, and hopefully in time it will once perfected!

Why does stem cell research not get the funding it deserves, this stuff is mind-blowing!

When he said his entire left side was burned I thought of Two-Face, I hope I'm not alone here.
