But why shoot yourself in the chest!? That's gonna be a painful death, right?

Oh and I guess if I was in a stand off I'd go on the Escapist, feel honoured internetees.

...Seriously?

Well, at least we'll be well informed about his treatment in jail then...

Since some of his friends were technically offering him tips via Facebook, authorities are now debating whether or not they should charge these people with Obstruction of Justice.

I'm sorry, what exactly is there to debate here? Someone aids a criminal with vital information and the authorities are quibbling over the legitimacy of the medium?

Here's a clue - could he read it? Can you? If you answered yes, they're guilty.

No sympathy for this guy, you take a hostage and draw someone else into your shit, you get what you have coming.

Also, anyone else thinks this part could lead to some serious consequences?
["The updates went both ways, actually, like when a friend posted that a SWAT officer was hiding in the bushes outside the room. "Thank you homie," Valdez responded. "Good looking out."]
If people can use mobile devices and social media/IM tools to aid and abet criminals real time what do you think government and law enforcement are going to do about it?

Haha. I love that image.

This is the most entertaining thing I've looked at on Facebook.

And I like it how he seemed to know the hostage. Was he hoping he could escape since he had a "hostage"?

Crazy foo'

This definitely falls under the idea of we must laugh lest we cry. However, how many people have been on the telephone to friends or loved ones when they were in the midst of doing something similar? We're simply seeing a further evolution of technology interacting with familiar events to produce truly bizarre results.

I do think the police should locate and prosecute anyone who was providing him with the position and activity of law enforcement personnel. If they were sitting in their car on the phone to him doing the same thing, it would be a no-brainer that they were at the very least obstructing justice, if not aiding and abetting.

Man, those crazy Mexicans sure do stick together. I love it. Hilarity ensues and all of that. I guess I'm stereotyping Mexicans here, but fuck it. During my brief time living in Tucson, I would see the most hilarious shit on the news. "Mike Sanchez shot in huge shoot out after he killed 7 babies. Family and friends give him mad props and will see him in heaven."

HAH!
I feel you man. I'm Mexican American and no offense taken. Really sickens me how our race acts in situations like this. God and Family above everything else, its ridiculous. And yes, the majority of them are exactly like this. Theres no way around it and don't give me some bullcrap statistics or tell me to stop stereotyping. I live in deep south Texas and its stereotypical Mexicans EVERYWHERE. I'm glad my parents raised me right.

How and why would someone shoot themselves in the chest?
Actually it happens a lot, although as a rule men shoot themselves in the head. Women, however, often go for the heart.
I know, that's what I was thinking, I can't remember the last time I heard a man shot himself in the chest, it's just... I don't know, it doesn't make sense.

Everybody who posted on this moron's facebook page with things like "I'm praying for you" apparently does not know that you should not pray for criminals. This is too retarded for words.
"we all miss you cuz and keep praying for ya love ya "

"Jason you are in my prayers day & night and i love u homie. i know u are a strong & positive person so i know u can pull thur this one . u know i am here for u if u need me and i would do anything for u . "

A STRONG AND POSITIVE PERSON? Strong and positive people do not take hostages! They are not criminals! They are not from Utah!

His number is on his page too. Someone should give him a call.

this about sums up my feelings. whats worse, is people are getting pissed off at hate. he's a goddamn criminal, and on the post mentioned by the OP someone said he would kill the police if it was him. if someone did that to my cousin (my closest female relative) i would buy a sniper rifle and shoot the guy (justifiable homicide: done to protect my family).

Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrright!

Sounds like a whole new level of idiot, although just calling him and his supporters idiots feels a bit weak in this mind boggling situation: I wonder if there'll be FB updates on his condition and subsequent jail time?
