I've seen worse.
The days of great game cover artwork is long since gone anyway, and will probably never return, since the guy who painted the Doom artwork died last month.
Except for Borderlands and Mirror's Edge there has barely been any interesting cover art at all made in the last decade or so
I think you exaggerate a little bit.
:)

Counterexamples: Bioshock collector's edition. Planescape: Torment. Grim Fandango. Quite a lot of Japanese original covers, Ico for instance.

But yeah, they should be able to do better. I hope some company would hire some of the Something Awful goons who made the "Classic Games Covers" on Photoshop Phriday as most of those outclass most of the real game covers in existance.

The box-art kind of reminds me of... What was it again? Oh, right! [any Hollywood action movie poster]'s the one!

Is anyone else as excited as I am to play as Lemonface over there? I hope you get to name that guy... because I would name him Lemonface. Unless Bioware has a sense of humor as twisted as mine and his name is already Lemonface.

Does it matter?
No. The game is still going to be badass. Who gives a crap what the cover looks like.

They could print it on blank cardboard box with "mass effect 2" written somewhere somewhat noticeable, and I'd still shell out for it.
Yep

If that is Commander Shepherd on the cover, then they should fire their artists immediately. Because the point of the game is to create your own story, so it is extremely counter-intuitive.

Although, it does grasp the blandness of the original game at least...

Hmm...*looks at the box art on Mass Effect 1* I do believe I see Commander Shepard at front and center.

I don't care about pretty box art, I actually had to go find Mass Effect on my shelf to even remember what the cover looked.

That said, I don't find the originals box art to be all that tantalizing. If anything it just reminds me of the covers to old (70s/80s) science fiction novels.

Yeah that box cover isn't that appealing, hell they should've just gone with a generic cover like Arkham Asylum.

It's just a cover guys... I doubt someone will buy/not buy that game just because of cover.

That box art is so generic I'm impressed by their dedication to genericness. It totally looks like it could be called Space Marines Shooting Things in Space 87.

Agreed. Really, who but a complete idiot buys a game based on box art, anyway? Heck, half the games I buy are of the Steam/Direct2Drive kind, and don't even COME WITH A BOX.

its too in your face. The characters seem to be trying to hog as much of the cover as possible and the depth is off... if they wanted to do SWAT style gritty action they could at least have put some emotion on the characters face. right now the characters look like they are bored... but if it was a brown paper sack with "Mass Effect 2" written by a 4 year old I'd still buy it.

yes it is Shepard but his face is a bit obscured by the glowy text background, and the picture is rather small compared to this box so it doesn't really make his face the focus point instead your eyes are drawn beyond his face at the glyphs behind him, causing you to not concentrate on the distinct facial features but instead on the figure as a whole. on the ME2 box it says "this is shepard! He's supposed to look like this!"
Although looking at the box for Mass Effect I remember how much it reminds me of every other generic movie poster... at least they have the female lead portrayed in a much more provocative position which serves to accentuate her curves, Were as the other one almost obscures her boobies. Thus based upon man logic, the first is superior because the female looks better.

I wasn't exactly expecting a piece of art that belongs in a museum either, but this looks like "Saturday Morning Mass Effect!"

Fine...

They should have fired their artists.

People underestimate box art nowadays, what with our advanced computers and 3d glasses, a really good drawing on the game box can make the game run faster.

When your playing the game, how often are you looking at the box art anyway? I wouldn't particularly care if it were a plain black background with "Mass Effect 2" written in plain white.

Never judged a book by its cover nor a game by its box.
