And yes! the packageing IS important. Its like your CDs and vinyls. Collectors items that gather dust on shelves, so you can have a look at them instead of buying generic posters. It saddens me so when people make a good product but the package looks like crap.

Believe me, when this game hits stores, the LAST thing i'm going to think about is the cover art for it. Whoopity doo!

Nah... its looks ok, goes well with the green I think... =S
But still, they could have done so much better,
maybe the Normandy Knackered up, with a reaper above it, but its in the shadows, as to keep suspense as to what the other reapers look like.

A box art to really show the seriousness of what is to come, and what is at loss maybe.

They'd to better to have the horizon of a planet in view with the normandy in the backdrop, with a big old "Mass Effect" in the centre ala Halo 2 collector's edition box art.

I don't really like it... What's up with the giant red square behind the 2?
The Sun/explosion/whatever which is being obscured by the giant, red square looks good BUT I CAN'T SEE IT.

They could print it on blank cardboard box with "mass effect 2" written somewhere somewhat noticeable, and I'd still shell out for it.
That actually sounds kind of unique compared to many other game boxcovers that i know.

IS this game really that perfect that the only thing people can complain about is the box art? I personally wouldnt care if it came WITHOUT a box if it meant being able to play that amazing game

I've seen worse.
The days of great game cover artwork is long since gone anyway, and will probably never return, since the guy who painted the Doom artwork died last month.
Except for Borderlands and Mirror's Edge there has barely been any interesting cover art at all made in the last decade or so
I think you exaggerate a little bit.
:)

Counterexamples: Bioshock collector's edition. Planescape: Torment. Grim Fandango. Quite a lot of Japanese original covers, Ico for instance.

But yeah, they should be able to do better. I hope some company would hire some of the Something Awful goons who made the "Classic Games Covers" on Photoshop Phriday as most of those outclass most of the real game covers in existance.
Two of your examples were of games released more than 10 years ago, which kind of was my point.
I didn't mean that there has been no good boxarts at all in the last 10 years, my two examples weren't meant to be interpreted as "these are the only good ones in 10 years!", just that it's probably about one game each year that has good boxart, out of how many hundred games that's released each year.
Compare that to the late 80's and early to mid 90's when just about every game, no matter how bad it was or how low production value it had, had great looking, in some cases even beautiful paintings as their cover art.
Every Psygnosis game made before they were bought up by Sony had wonderful artwork. Just look up Agony and Shadow of the Beast on Mobygames.

That is some terrible box art.

The Limited Edition [http://www.amazon.com/Mass-Effect-2-Collectors-Xbox-360/dp/B002VL2HA2/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I37KXAD9WMUHTI&colid=1568D5F6DZMZE] is a bit better, but damn.....that is the defintion of "generic" right there.

The Boxart seem too generic, as in, most US boxes have too many faces on them, and that scares me.

AHHHHHHHHH
It's like "The Sims: Guess Who Edition"

Uh anyway yeah the normal box art is extremely generic but the collector's edition is just...wow.

...I think this is the first time I ever wanted a collector's edition just because of what the box art looked like.
Well, the collecter's edition seems like those kind of boxes that makes you wonder what's inside, then, from natural curiosity, you buy it, rather than the normal game. Which I like.
