This is just a good marketing tool to get people to buy the collectors edition

There they go again with their 'clever marketing tactics'...the bastards....

OT: Yeah, I do think it's underwhelming as well.

Well I suppose they don't want a lot of new buyers with this game since it looks like a samey shooter. Then again, perhaps they are trying to trick the twits who buy any shooter...

Either way, I'll probably have to wait for the collector's edition.

Er...its got the name of the game, its got characters on the front of it. Sounds like standars box art standards to me.

Plus, if the game kicks arse (which it will) the box art won't matter.

Damn, this box art is bad. I mean, Thane looks like he's shitting himself while thinking real hard about the stench of it, Miranda seems to be missing her teeth (see her sunken cheeks) and Shepard is wearing half a car's worth of armor and appears to be taking a dump inside of his car armor.
(hell, I can't tell if that cover is worse than this one: http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/comment/9/2009/11/37be48c6eceb8e8e2e9f28b2c2f379f1/original.jpg )

But hey, the cover art could just be Drew Karpyshyn taking a dump in a toaster and I'll still buy it.

Not only generic, but the lady in the back doesn't even look like she's from the right time period.

Well, at least its not as lazy as the halo legendary box art, just the words "halo 3" on a black background, lol

They could print it on blank cardboard box with "mass effect 2" written somewhere somewhat noticeable, and I'd still shell out for it.
That's about my gf's opinion, too.
She asked me earlier if I'd mind her taking a month off of work to play it. >>
I said "no", but stipulated that she still showers daily and I get sex at least once a week.

:D We have a good relationship.

That is indeed boring box art. I'm not quite sure why everyone thinks the Limited Edition one is good though; like someone else said on one of the first pages, that gives off the Forza box art vibe, and that's no exactly spectacular. "N7", big whoop.

"The box art doesn't matter/who cares about the box art/don't judge a book by its cover..." Well, while that is true in theory, people *do* actually buy games based on the box art, it's what makes people pick it off the shelf and give it a look in the first place in many cases. First appearances are important in all parts of society. Bioware needs to make as big a profit as possible with any game they make. As such, they should try to appeal to people who actually *does* buy based on the packaging too, and not just people who played/liked no.1 or buys based on hype or recommendation.

I like Mass Effect (apart from all the rubbish generic copy-pasted planets or the Mako "minigame"). In fact, I've liked every Bioware game I've played thus far, and I bought Dragon Age purely based on the fact it's a Bioware rpg. Poor choice of box art is not going to stop me or any other Bioware/Mass Effect fanboi from picking up Mass Effect 2. But it will definitely sell less to the random casual person browsing for something new. Does Bioware need these customers too? Maybe not. Do they want them? I'm pretty sure they do.

Ooooh! A game about space marines! We don't get nearly enough of these!

Will it have multiplayer deathmatch?
Wince factor being that the sequel to Bioshock, which was an incredibly well-plotted game, will. [http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/08/take-two-details-bioshock-2-multiplayer/]

Hummm..

Anybody else notice that woman looks like a lame, less hot version of Christa Miller?
As in Jordan, from Scrubs?

For some reason this seems to strike me as anti-hype marketing...

I mean, lower the expectations of a game through bad advertising (To an extent) and when the game comes out; make the big bucks because people think it is better than sliced bread (Instead of "Not so good, I kinda expected something better)

The Fuck is that?

OT: looks like a photoshop of three seperate character arts over an enviorment concept art
