It's fun, but i have grown bored of it. I am not the most imaginative or don't have the ambition to build something that big, my friends have built the eye of sauron and such. it is fun but it is very one dimensional, maybe if there was an objective system added id do it, but i only play in short spurts.

The best 15 Euro I've ever spent on a game.

It's a great game to play with some friends. But playing alone is fun too.

It's hard to describe the feeling when you've worked really hard on a building for a long time and you then finally complete it and see it in its full glory.

Minecraft is not a normal "game," and as much as I am in love with it, I completely see why other people don't like it.

The fun, for me, stems from coming up with your own objectives and seeing if you can accomplish them. Whether that is tunneling under a river, getting a skeleton to kill a Creeper, or building a civilization on a server with some friends, there are endless opportunities for fun adventures.

That being said, some people don't like that kind of sandbox, and thats fine. If you know what kind of gamer you are (I am the kind who spends more time running on rooftops in Assassin's Creed than actually killing people), you should know if you'll like the game.

...I would also assert that Minecraft is the best sandbox ever.

Let me put it this way, the way you can lose five hours playing this game will make you start thinking you've been put on a spaceship at relativistic speeds during the time you were sitting at the computer.

Oh, and a five-hour session playing Minecraft will make your wrist hate you.

I would definitely recommend it at it's current price.

I bought Minecraft during alpha and it was immensely addicting for 1 or 2 days. I started playing it around noon one saturday and the next time I looked up it was sunday.
It get's boring after u've seen everything there is to see and done everything there is to do, but now there are even more features in the game than when I bought it and I guess there are at least 20hours of gameplay there until u run out of things to do.
Then all there's left to do is wait for updates (achievements are coming this week according to Notch) or start insane building projects....

I like to have SOME incentive besides building and surviving for the sake of it. My dream would be for Mojang to include randomly generated dungeons full of monsters (if they haven't already, that is) for me to spelunk for awesome loot. No RPG, mind you, but something else to do besides just straight up building.
They do have dungeons, and also a little place called the nether...

You can equip yourself with weapons and fight mobs all day long anyways.

It's alright. I sometimes play it. Not my favorite game, not by a long shot, but I have great respect for Notch considering he made it (Well, a lot of it) and became a millionaire because of it before he started hiring more people.

It's good. It kind fo varies though, I know people who play nothing else, and then there are people like me who give it a breif little stint once a week on average. I do enjoy it when I do play it, though.

The only fun part for me has been the first day. Having to get settled before the sun goes down and you get a creeper love hiss. I restart worlds everyday just for that.

Minecraft is fantastic in the single player mode, but it is literally unputdownable if you have a group of friends willing to just mess around on a private server. :D

It's fun sure, but it's infinitely more fun in multiplayer.

Escapecraft has a massive usergroup [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Escapecraft-Minecraft] on here with a strong community.
How... How..! How did I know that you'd post here! Call it a sixth sense... >.>

OT: Well, I enjoy it, and many others do too. There's a free version on the website, although it's very outdated, and the proper one is much better. I suggest you go there and try it out.

It all depends on how much imagination you have, I know for some of my friends the game seemed incredibly dull and pointless, but I personally found that it's lack of any real story or narritive drive is one of it's biggest strengths. It truly is a completly sandbox game.

If you still feel uncertain, you can always try out the free to play alpha version, which lacks a lot of the new beta content, but still gives you a good feel for the game. Also, check out some youtube minecraft series, My personal favorite is the yogscast, but they don't really need any more advertising.
The limit being your imagination is not true, people use that as some kind of moto for Minecraft but it sure as hell it isnt.

After watching that video (movie/interview thingy with 30m) I lost a lot of respect with Notch, he is limiting the game, he is the reason the game doesnt get better from what it is now. He said that the game is his vision and that the game will only have what he wants. The community has great ideas but since those ideas didnt came from him he wont use them (he says that in the video.

Basicly they should simply let modders create the tools instead of taking months to create a bed. The game should be full of content, then the limit would be your imagination. I want lasers, aliens, boats, robots, quests, jetpacks, vehicles, elevators, etc. Most of this stuff was probably already made by modders but since the updates fuck them up they become useless.
I agree with you about notch's reluctance to include community made material, It really does hinder development, but we're starting to see more and more of a leaning towards that direction though. There was soft lighting, wolves, the soon to be included stats and quests, weather ect. And in the same interview (I think, unless you mean a different one) he says that Jeb has started to introduce things that Notch at first didn't like, but once he saw it in action decided to include.

I really don't understand what you mean about your imagination not being the limit. Could you elaborate on that?

Minecraft is a great game. No, there isn't a story or specific objective, but Notch is adding a very original achievement system in the next update, and there are many adventure maps you can download from the Minecraft Forums. The thing about vanilla Minecraft is that you can't expect anyone to tell you what to do. The goal is to build, create, and make something. You can make cathedrals or cities, obstacle courses and waterfalls, really anything.

I played SSP (Survival Single Player) for around four months before I finally got bored of it. But I didn't get bored of Minecraft, I got bored of being alone. SMP (Survival Multi-Player) is an entirely different monster. If you can find a good server to play on, with good people and fair moderators, then you can spend a lot of time building. (Playing with friends is apparently even better but I'm ()[/foreveralone].)

And that's all about vanilla. Once you get into the mods and custom maps, there's enough to keep you interested for a very long time. I highly recommend Industrial Craft, the Pistons Mod (which will become vanilla soon), and the EscapeCraft maps.

In other words, Minecraft is well worth 15 Euros. Buy it twice. Thrice. Or once. Just play it.

You still cant do what you want, you can do a lot of stuff but those things are still constrained by the "world" of Minecraft.

What if I want to create a flying spaceship? I can build it but can I fly it? No. What about armies? I want to fight an army of dudes with another army of other dudes but I cant do it. And yet people still insist on saying that the limit is your imagination but I say that the limit are the tools provided by the game. Give us tools to give blocks the ability to control and fly, give us tools to create minions (we have the wolfs for now), give us the tools to create our own game modes. With those kind of tools the limit starts to become your imagination.

Its a pure sandbox, so you need your own drive to do things.

I've stopped playing, but only out of frustration because I was blown up like 3 times in a row (you know when things like that happen in a game, and you can't drag yourself back to it?), not because it was boring.

Multiplayer can curb the feeling of pointlessness though when you're at a loss for ideas, since you'll be working towards something with other people.

Ooookay then, moving on to the topic of the thread...

Not yay, not nay, but...meh. The free version is fairly boring, but I'm not interested enough to pay for the thing. However, my friends seem to enjoy it well enough.

Soooo I realise minecraft have like a million players or so who have bought it and prob twice that number who play it illegally and i was wondering what the appeal is.

I have watched people play and i don't get it. So I understand that you build your own world? But then monsters come at night? Is the game just an exploratory game? Are there quest objectives to the game? Is there a story?
My argument is the following:

Gary's Mod.

That is all.

Here's a quick look into Minecraft.

It's a Sandbox game that allows you to build whatever you want basically. You try to create a shelter for yourself for when at night, monsters come out. You punch trees to get wood. You make this wood into a workbench. You use your leftover wood to make a pickaxe to mine coal, and sticks. Look for some coal, and make it into torches to keep monsters from spawning near and in your house. If you want, you can change the difficulty of the game to peaceful, to make any monsters already spawned, disappear. Now the rest of the game is yours.

If you need help, there's a Help section on the site, that provides videos on how to create a house, survive your first night, and so on.

The cool thing is not just this aspect. You also have Multiplayer. You can connect to other people's Minecraft servers and build or survive with other players like yourself.

You can also get mods for Minecraft, which change how the game looks, or adds new gameplay aspects altogether. Such as new mobs, more items to build, new tools to work with, and etc.

This game will give you hours upon hours upon hours of great playtime, whether it's solo, or with others.
There's a great community to talk with if you need help, or just talk with in general.

Did I also mention you can change how your character looks? If you select profile on the minecraft page, you can choose some skins you can download at the Skindex to change your appearance. You can look like a ninja, Micheal Jackson, a Creeper in disguise, and much.. MUCH more.

It's digital lego, or at least it's partly the same appeal: Pure creative freedom, with the addition of fighting monsters.

What's not to like?

I played it a lot at home, but stopped once we started a multiplayer server at school. It's still fun for me exploring caves and making rollercoasters...
