I really don't like the "more realism, less camp" vibe the clip gave me. Granted Annihilation was one of the worst films ever, but at least the first one had a lot of charm and embraced the campy nature of the games without going overboard. Hell, I find this clip's versions of Baraka and Reptile impossible to take seriously, and when the clip's going for that gritty feel that's a bad thing. I'm in the minority here though so if someone wants to refute me I'll just say this in advance regarding your opinion: "Fair enough, since I'm probably missing the point. Of course, I also thought Slumdog Millionaire sucked."

Wow, I don't know if a new MK movie is a good-sell or not (do they even make the games anymore?) but this "pitch" certainly looks pretty cool.

I remember liking the first MK movie even while not being a fan of the game series. Could be cool...could suck ass, too, of course.

There was just a thread about this.
And no..

It looks like crap.

That is NOT the Mortal Kombat I know..
Wah wah wah.

The best part about this is you actually see the fights, none of that Jason Bourne crap where the camera man has a seizure every three seconds.

Tell me where you see "Jason Bourne" as director.

It's BETTER!
No, it is not.
This isn't Mortal Kombat, this is a dull trailer with a namesteal as it will not have anything to really do with Mortal Kombat at all judging from this trailer.
Wah Wah Wah!!!!

:p

I must ask though, what was your opinion on "There will be Brawl?" That's if you've seen it of course. They took all the Nintendo characters that we know and love and gave them a huge make-over for that show and it ended up being surprisingly good!

As for the video clip, it seems like they're headed in the right direction. Most of the problems with game-to-movie adaptations are with the directors and producers trying to copy from the game in almost every way, shape, or form. What I'd like to see is more movies based off of games that take an element from the game and expand on it with an original twist or point of view.

Meh... no powers, no outworld, no gods.

Bah, it's not Mortal Kombat it's a version of Fight Club with a nod to MK. Hopefully it wont become a movie.

hah... baraka is soooo awesome.
jesus guys, I dunno if this has been said (not trawling through pages of bullshit) but mortal combat hasn't meant ANYTHING for at least a decade, so its not like this is a desecration.

It could just be a really good fanmade - did nobody else recognise the music from Resident Evil?

You say that like its a bad thing. ;-)
Why is it everyone is trying to defend the 'good memory' of MK by slating this trailer? Game to movie adaptations never survive the transitions unscathed. Even the first MK movie had warts, though i admit there were few. As I said, MK has been dead for ages, if someone wants to flog a dead horse, fine by me. If you want a real bad adapation, check out the streetfighter ones, Jean Claude's and that chun li one. Those were really bad. Compared to them, this one isnt that bad an idea.

You know in most cases straying from the source material is a bad move when it comes to adaptations but, let's face it, Mortal Kombat didn't have the best story in the world and I'm very impressed with how the re-imagined these characters. It looks like it could at least be a halfway decent gritty martial arts movie.

From what I saw in the trailer who's to say that there isn't powers, ancient evils and gods in this version? Maybe they're actually taking the smart route and making them subtle and mysterious. Samurai Champloo comes to mind as a good example of this, only one character could use ki attacks and that made him pretty terrifying.

Well the plot comes off a bit over the top but this actually looks pretty good. If the directing for the entire movie matches the Jhonny Cage/Baraka Fight scene this might actually be pretty good. Heh this ones gonna be a bro-movie though my wifes not gonna like all the blood.

I don't know, I liked the whole magic and other dimensions story to Mortal Kombat. But I won't disagree that this trailer is awesome, and it could be a good take on it.

So far, the one thing that piqued my interest in this trailer was Reptile's background. Pretty reasonable and somewhat believable, in my opinion. But Scorpion as a possible protagonist? Quite unsettling.
I didn't see him as a protagonist judging by the fact he's in prison and the noises when it faded to black. He's probably just someone they think they have control over. He's no hero, he just wants to kill Sub-Zero.

Scorpion as an anti-hero main character? Yeah, I could go with that...

Better than the whiny "Champions of the Earth" bullcrap from the first and second movies. A dark, gritty reboot is just what the movies need, in my opinion.

No kid friendly nonsense with tame fight scenes and only enough blood to maybe fill a plastic bag. Let's see some balls-to-the-teeth asskickery!

I don't know if it's because of this Video, but as of today this is out...

They seem to not have interest in making as much of a departure for the next game.

Oh yeah, has anyone else noticed, in almost all of the spin off media (movies/tv/cartoons) There has been very little (if any) bloody violence. Mortal Kombat's main selling point was the bloody violence. This trailer would, in a weird sense, bring it back to what it was all about, good old fashioned violence.

I really do hope this turns out to be a movie. If the whole movie was like this it would kick so much ass it might even pass the Adama Manuver in terms of bad-assery and that's saying something. I rather like how much they made Reptile into a flat out monster, not to mention I didn't know that illness was actually real by the way.

It had some good moments but I don't think a whole Mortal Kombat movie should be done like this. I can understand why Nolan took his direction with Batman but I don't get why there is such a trend heading for gritty and realistic at the moment. With some things I don't think its good to try to find the reality in the fantasy because the whole point of fantasy is that it can go beyond the restrictions of reality.
