They've taken the digitized graphics things to a hole nother level. The fight scenes in this trailer are actually in-game footage of the next MK release

Andy Chalk said:
This is not your father's Mortal Kombat. Dig it: No supernatural gimmickry, no undead warriors, no Outworld, just the most dangerous of humans gathered together for a deadly, underground tournament. Reptile: A psychotic, hideously deformed cannibal. Baraka: A self-mutilating plastic surgeon and psychotic mass murderer. Johnny Cage: Savagely beaten and killed while working as an undercover operative. Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Shang Tsung: The gang's all here, but not as you know them.
But all those things make it Mortal Kombat..
Removing them stops the movie from actually being Mortal Kombat..
The only think it will actually have in common with Mortal Kombat is the names only.

...What the hell kind of policing is that? Hiring a killer to murder a bunch of other people hardly seems legal, let alone adequate police procedure... also, the whole Baraka vs. Cage fight scene: it was awesome, but leads one to question why he didn't just decapitate Cage with his arm blades immediately...

More to the point, that looks really, really good. I was incredibly surprised when I saw it.

New news -

http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2010/06/09/jeri-ryan-says-mortal-kombat-movie-clip-was-a-pitch-for-wb/

So, this video was a pitch by a director to Warner Brothers about possibly doing a remake. Jeri Ryan states she has no idea what WB will/has said.

In any event, that looked fricken awesome. And Michael Jai White himself is back? Shit son, if spawn is in the movie you know it'll be good.

Why does making stuff more "gritty" or "realistic" always seem like an exercise on how to take the "fun" and "imagination" out of something? Why is having an undead fire breathing ninja vs the chinese god of thunder in a 1v1 battle to the dead considered a bad thing? And then there are people like "no thats gay, lets just have crazy dudes beat each other up in a basement and simply name them after dudes from a video game that was cool 10 years ago. Ya, that movie would be awesome."
If anyone hasn't learned from the old Mk movies, this one is going to blow huge dick, without a redeemable thing about it. Unless you count it being a test showcasing how you can rip the guts out of a franchise, parade in its skin like buffalo bill and still get paid.

That looks so damn cool... so what if it's radically different? You know what was so steeped in canon that it became an unweildly mess? MK:Armageddon. Time for a reboot, and any reboot that looks THAT damn cool wins my vote.

Sigh... Always knew this day would come, when they remake something I actually like for the worse.

Don't get me wrong, it possibly could be a good movie, but I question the validity of calling it 'Mortal Kombat' when the only things they have in common are character names. And every character is now a human with some radical disease or mutation? Even Goro and Sub-Zero? Try doing that to something like Final Fantasy and see how far you get. It's like the Batman Begins concept (which I loved) taken a few leagues too far.

Do Not Want, but maybe the next trailer will change my mind. Just call it someting else, like 'Assassin War'.

To all the naysayers I say this. Old school does not equal good school. Those of you feeling nostalgic for Outworld as was should go back and watch the sequels to the original MK movie. Man those were dire. Plus how many of us truly care about MK anymore. After MK3's ridiculous difficulty curve the series became dull and boring. Sure Raiden is epic, but frankly I'm happy to have a remake done in a real world setting, with malformed and just plain deranged humans filling the old characters shoes. It'll certainly help with the suspension of disbelief. Otherworldly entities fighting humans to control the world is a little out there in terms of believability but humans kicking the ever living snot out of each other for the right to call themselves the world's most deadly killer? That sounds like a premise I can get on board with. I am in the camp of those that hope WB like this enough to pick up on it.

In other news, that was awesome.

To all those who hate this trailer because it ruins the series:
Have you been paying attention to the franchise at all? It has been milked and bled to all hell. When it did that crossover with DC, it had finally ran outta ideas. The trailer ruins the old series? Ed Boon and company did that years ago. Im not saying its a bad game, but check out the lack of proper innovation in the last couple of games.

This series NEEDS a reboot. And a violent video game is much more disturbing if it's closely related to the real world, mortal kombat was disturbing at first since it featured digitised actors and had a somewhat realistic setting (at the time anyway). By the time it had hit MK3 or trilogy it had lost all it's punch, hence why Deadly Alliance was made to reboot the frachise and it worked. now they have got to the same point. now another reboot is needed, welcome to progress.

That is, if it's a game thats being made. So far this is a movie, and considerng the other attempts at movies and tv series have all flopped bar the first movie, this can only be a good thing..... Basically what im saying is IT COULD BE A SHIT LOAD WORSE.

Oh yeah, i wanna see more of this new sub zero, badass. And is it my imagination or is scorpion being played by Syler from Heroes?

That....that actually looks pretty cool. Baraka looks nothing like he use too and the absence of Johnny Cage from the tournament will be upsetting, but every looks awesome and given that modern feel. I do hope they make this into a full fledged movie, I will surely see it if it is released.
