I don't think any of us wanted a GRITTY Mickey, that would just be silly. We just wanted an interesting/awesome Mickey. Take Kingdom Hearts Mickey, for example. The dude's fucking Yoda in those games.
I was never turned on to the game because of a "Gritty Mickey", I just wanted to see a new vision of what has become a familiar and worn-out concept. Having to take away some elements due to cost, or your target audience is understandable. However, neither of there arguments apply to Epic Mickey. They are backed by Disney, and their target audience is the hardcore gamer.

It's a sad state of affairs.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand my interest in this game has officially died. I don't fault Spector because he tried... but fucking focus groups... Goddamn them.

Soooooooo, seeing how a lot of you are reacting I guess the only way gamers can enjoy anything is by making it gritty and dark.

Remember what happened to Twilight Princess: http://www.joystickdivision.com/2010/06/pretension_1_gamers_you_ruined.php
Well, the whole appeal of the game is that it wouldnt be a awful shitting pretty rainbows and good morals crap that Disney has made of the years, that it would be diffrent, and catering more to the hardcore side, but now,Disney just took away all that made the game unique and back to the older fails of it's generation.

Crap. This means instead of getting an evil Mickey, we get an evil Navi, doesn't it?

Focus groups are like Ubisoft.

[HEADING=2]Hey fellow nerds! I understand how appealing it always seems to make gritty reboots of stuff, but please... don't. It always turns out to be a bad idea.[/HEADING]

Cue me being buried in a wave of "YOU SUCK" and "LOL KIDDIE" in 3, 2, 1.

Wait, really?

I may have to give them a chance now...

First Deus Ex: Invisible War and now this. Screw you Specter!!
So some biker dude was like, "Hey man! Don't mess with my childhood!"
I would have replied, "Hey Man! Don't mess with my creative vision!"

The focus group should be made up of GAMERS & DISNEY fans... not Bikers or some Joe Shmoe!

I'm not surprised though. Since they are making it for the Fisher Price Wii after all

Actually, that was why I wanted to play the game. The only consequence of my actions now would be what color the giant LEDS around Mickey's head would be. Before, being an evil Mickey meant you would actually look like a frigging evil Mickey, not the same Mickey with different lens flares.
I agree that it would look better for Mickey to undergo a proper transformation instead of changing the colour of a few floating lights, but I don't see how this is going to have a major effect on the game. I'm okay with a few people saying that this has put them off, but when 80% of escapists view this as a deal breaker, I think they might have misunderstood the article.

There was a Biker in the focus group? Makes me wonder if the rest of the focus group consisted of a Mailman, Bee Farmer, Exterminator, and a Nun. It's not the people who'd I equate to knowing good game or story design.

That and Bikers just hate things.

I myself would have thought it a good idea, just seeing how being evil is supposed to feel negative. If you feel uncomfortable with Mickey's Evil look, you go Hero. You take away the repercussions of being evil and there's nothing left to overcome. Makes it less of an "Evil" option and more of a "Two endings equals Replayability." Option. Takes the appeal away.

The Issue is Warren Specter Promised RPG Elements, and the RPG element actually makes me wanna buy Epic Mickey. The RPG Elements not only Change Mickey's Appearance (Colored Mickey for Hero, Black and White Mickey For Scrapper or Evil, and Half and Half for Neutral) but they also change how the story goes. And to be honest, it can't have RPG elements if theirs only one path and that path is good.

Completely agree. There's no point in making it gritty just for grit's sake, but an interesting point (which this seemed to be heading towards) is always appreciated.

The game's concepts and ideas just had a little magic. It went well together with the concept of a fantastical world and Mickey Mouse. It seemed like a world where anything goes. Now all those ideas will probably be pushed back and we'll get a normal mickey running around in forests with elves and rabbits painting stuff with Wii Motion+. No thanks. I was a huge fan of old SNES Mickey Mouse games like Mickey Mania and now all that hope of having another cool take on the rat has (almost) disappeared

For all those people that don't remember the original Mickey: He was bad-ass. Picking up chicks, throwing down with people twice his size, abusing animals...he had it all.

Personally I say they shouldn't mess too much with Mickey. But then again Mickey has gone through tons of changes on his own.

I meant the issue the testers had. Couldn't they, the testers, be good Mickey, and "corrupt" their childhood only if they wanted too.

Unless it forced them to be evil. I too am dissapointed by this removal.
