Only Peter Molyneux can spew stupidities of that caliber. He never disappoints.
I'm not entirely convinced his argument is devoid of merit. Success in much of the computer market in general has not been found in the task at hand but rather how one interacts with the technology. Video games devoid of interactivity become nothing more than a movie - it is our interaction that makes the medium. Looking beyond all of this, the mouse made possible the GUI, itself a base requirement to making the computer a machine that most anyone can use without a great deal of training. While there may be the standard hyperbole here, his core assertion remains vaild - a new way to interface with a technology is often more important than the tech itself. Just look at a common example - digital media. The MP3 format allowed for high quality audio to be contained a relatively small package but the first several attempts at a device that leveraged this techology met limited commercial success. Eventually one platform reigned supreme and it was not because of superior technical mastery as competing products produced comperable performance at similar price points. Instead, success came as a result of an interface that was easy to understand and ultimately pleasing to simply interact with.
Natal may prove to be such a technology, but it is hardly the first attempt at using such an interface. It is certainly the most advanced slated for widespread release at a low enough price point that it could reasonbly become common, but success for the interface technology does not lie in the hands of the device itself. A mouse without a GUI is nothing more than an interesting gadget, and the Natal must similarly find a purpose or risk consumer indifference. Thus far, the device has been used as little more than an elaborate analog for a mouse or joystick and as such it offers nothing that makes me think it will be bigger than the mouse. Simply simulating an existing device is hardly a road to success. Without demonstrating a purpose of its own the Natal will never achieve a reputation beyond a gimick.
