What precisely is wrong with Satan? As I know several Satanists and they are the nicest people I know, they do not promote "evil", they promote choice, free-will and questioning authority. As to the whole killing and torturing people for petty reasons I do believe it is 's god who does that, not Satan. You know, the whole Great Flood and nuking Sodom and Gomorrah. My Christian grandmother is so mean spirited with her religious justifications.

THANK YOU for throwing me a thread EXACTLY in line with my tastes. I've been a crazed listener for almost a decade now. I've been to so, SO many corners of the scene. Here's some recommendations:

Coroner (Progressive Thrash Metal)
Mindblowing band in every sense possible. Heart-pounding polyrhythmic riffs, extremely technical and sophisticated leads, and relevant, human songwriting to top it all off.
Only downside are the vocals.

Animals as Leaders (Progressive Metal)
Innovative guitarwork, heavily atmospheric, capable instrumentalists.

Megadeth (Technical Thrash Metal)
Solid thrash band with some of the most ear-catching riffs in the genre. Politically charged songwriting to accompany it.
Downside: Have lately gotten stale, extremely corny lyrics (used to be far more substantial)

Kalmah (Melodic Death Metal)
Amazingly atmospheric, great hooks and themes. Incredible use of synth. Manages to supercede the cliches of generic melodeth, goes beyond vikings and into politics, religion, and deeper social matters.
Downside: Songs can feel somewhat rushed.

Artillery (Technical Thrash Metal)
The catchiest, poppiest band in the mix, however, some of the most blistering riffs in this collection. Very sophisticated songwriting.
Downside: Lack of layering

Makes Satan break into tears. Beautiful, atmospheric, incomprehensibly proggy, mindblowing songwriting, envelops you in a vortex of emotion and never lets go. Steller band. Mikael Akerfealdt is a genius. At that, all of the prior musicians are

Reading what you've written, I think that we share similar taste; I always adore metal, not heavy metal, and yes IMO there is a difference. Metal is more hard edgy melodic intense rock, heavy metal is fast streaming guitar solos and screaming lyrics. If your more of a METAL fan, I would go with System of A down, Korn, or Tool.

Just on a note, ( not trying to start anything, just as a point of information) The "satanic" black metal bands that exist are not devil worshippers. Satanism ( at least LeVeyan Satainsm) has nothing to do with Satan/ devil worship. Just for the sake of interest, I would suggest doing some research, not so you will be converted, just because I think you should know the difference between satanism and devilworsip, plus cutting out satanic metal is kinda shutting the door on an awesome part of the genre that can be pretty melodic/beautiful.

If your looking for some different types of metal I'd suggest

Nightwish-Falls under a couple genres but I call it symphonic metal

Ayeron-Mentioned a couple times already very melodic and has tons of different artists in each cd.

Iced Earth-Not quite sure where to put this, maybe progressive metal. One of my personal favorites.

Blind Guardian-One of the best metal bands, hands down. HANSI!

Evergrey- A good power metal band.

Volbeat- My favorite band, I suggest them to everyone no matter what they ask for. Imagine a mix between Metallica, Johnny Cash, and Elvis. I put them under my own genre called Danish Country Metal.
