Yes. The laser on both my original "fat" PS2 and the following slim replacement burned out. They both switch on and go to the start-up screen alright, but won't read any discs. Irritating too, seeing as I still have 50+ PS1/2 games. The original "fat" PS2 did last for quite a long time though, considering it was bought not long after release and lasted until about three years ago, with heavy use. Much longer than the current generation of consoles seem to last, anyway. My brother is on his third 360.
Then again, I still own a fully functioning Sega Mega Drive. That thing must be coming up on 20 years old.

I've had mine since about a year after they first launched, and it works like a dream still. I bought it used too. Can't say the same for one of my friends though. He got one same day as me, and his crapped out in 2006. So for giggles he decided to get on the roof of his house, chuck it as hard as he could, and watch it smash against the concrete. It was sad, but so pretty xD
My PS2 never broke - it's served me since 2005-ish, and if not for the PS3 I just got, I'd still be playing it.
I got my PS2 almost 8 years ago and it has never failed to read any kind of disc yet. Keeping the fingers crossed.
There was a stretch where it stopped reading discs, but when I came back to it a year or so later it worked just fine again.
Mine was exactly the same and I had owned it from a week after it was released in the UK I gave it to my friend when I got my PS3 and as far as I'm aware it is still going, although all he ever plays on it is Pro Evo.NeedAUserName said:

I don't know if it counts anyway since it's the chip that's installed that's broken. The PS2 still works, I just can't play my one imported Japanese game on it (which still pisses me off as it's the only reason I bothered to get a chipped one in the first place...)

Years later, my second generation PS2 has never failed me. In fact, I often resort to using my ps2 over other systems when watching a dvd; as I've never encountered a dvd(less it was sufficiently mangled) that it could not, or would not, play.{Unlike certain other shoddy systems, yes I'm looking at you 360)
Some of my favorite games are to be found upon it's removable storage devices; speaking of which, the last game I purchased for a console, was for the ps2.(Mind you I own an xbox 360)
It never fails me, and one of my favorite things about it, although minor in detail one might say, is the manual cd ejection system. The console never needed power to insert, or eject, a cd.

After my first broke I was sent a refurbished replacement wic also broke, so I bought a slim with Ratchet & Clank 3.
Mine did this in a nutshell. Occasionally it has difficulty playing some DVDs, but it always plays games and it's never officially crapped out on me... *eyes it warily* Maybe it's planning something?NeedAUserName said:

None of this is any surprise to me. SONY is crap. God knows how they are so huge with how consistently awful their product is, and how bowel-stinking bad their customer service is. Thing is, I worked as a semi-pro musician for many years, and any musician who has spent time in a studio can tell you that SONY equipment is the least reliable, worst equipment you can possibly use.
Now I work for a University where I negotiate software contracts and buy computers. I advise people all the time to avoid the VAIO like the plague. They don't listen, of course, and the result is disastrous. Just two days ago, I am not kidding, one of those people came back and asked "how do I get service? It's falling apart and their customer service won't help us." All I could say is, "I warned you about this." There is nobody who is going to help them at this point, as predicted. That department has thrown the VAIO in the trash and is looking at a Dell or Lenovo.

Mine quits reading discs on a relatively regular basis and so does my girlfriend's.
15 minutes of disassembly and tinkering fixes it. I assume that everyone with my issue could probably fix yours in roughly the same amount of time rather than replacing it.

Its never faile dme, yes it may run slow as fuck sometime and not load the floor in need for speed or any of the characters faces in Killzone.. but dammit its SO RELIABLE!
