Both types offer pros and con's
JRPG's tend to feture a lot of turn base combat with some people like and others dislike, they also tend to have interesting "male" charaters, and cn occasionally have very goofy storys. However, if the story is very good it usually serves as a great devise for sucking you into the game (The story in Lost Oddesy really drew me in, I found the dream sequences Kiam had were very intuative and really made me more atytacked to the charaters as you played through and found our more snipits about his life). However combat in JRPGS can become tedious and equipment management tends to somtimes become a chore (Do I equip the Helm of Joyous Light to recive a +2 boost to personality when interacting with coxwell citizens or the Dimiad of Justice and get a +3 boost to conversation skills when conversing with Gorph citizens).
Western RPGS tend to focus more on a free-exploration world and real time combat, Like: Oblivion, Mass Effect and Fallout 3 (yes I konw VATS add a turn base sorta feel, but let run on the assumption that you don't use it). They also tend to have more character customazation, however sometimes the customazation inm some areas tends to be a little pointless and do little to actually change your charaters apperence (How thick is my charaters chest going to be, even thought it barley changes size when I move the slider!!!!!!!) Storys in Western RPGS tend to not be as deep as their counterparts from Japan, and while I am not saying a story is not present, it just does not go as far as some JRPGS, however some WRPGs do have very good storys (like in my OPINION Mass Effect). Equipment management tend to be a little simpler, with each object offering very specific effects, however you tend to get inventory limits (either a number or a weight limit). However what you equip tends to be a lot more diverse and noticiable in the game world than in JRPGs.
These are just a few pros and cons about these 2 RPG types, we must all remember that great titles have come from both groups.
P.S sorry for spelling and Grammer mistakes, I was tired when I typed this.
