I like them both. Each has appeals, each has negatives. Why limit yourself? A good game is a good game.

If I had to pick, I tend to go JRPG more, but I'll pursue a Western RPG if I hear good things(Vampire, Witcher).

JRPGs have gone downhill as of late outside of the Shin Megami Tensei banner, sadly. But at least SMT is still good.

If done well I enjoy games from both subgenres. That's that.
I love you both. Anyone who has said anything similar afterwords, I love you too.

Anything that's good regardless of genre. Though I'd have to say I prefer JRPG's. Then again, I haven't really played that many WRPG's since most of them are for the PC, which would prove a little difficult for my poor little laptop. But considering most of my favourite games are JRPG's, I can make an educated guess.

I like JRPGs a bit more, but both are awesome. They are not sub-genres within the big RPG genre, they're their own genres with a chunk of cross over.

I guess Western RPGs for me... but that's not saying much. I don't really like the entire genre, but if I do play an RPG, it's going to be a Western one. The turn-based mechanic in JRPGs alone turns me off.

Every time someone mentions hating turn-based combat in JRPGs, I turn to my copy of Tales of Symphonia and die a little inside.

I'm really torn on this, RPG is my favorite type of game, Bioware is my favorite company, and Final Fantasy is my Favorite Franchise. TOO MUCH PRESSURE!!

But all and all, I'd have to go with Western RPG's, because of Bioware and Bethesda. They've made great games over the years like Morrowind, Kinights of the Old Republic, Baldur's Gate, Fallout 3, Mass Effect, Etc.
While Square and Atlus have made amazing game, their more recent titles have been lacking.

Both types offer pros and con's

JRPG's tend to feture a lot of turn base combat with some people like and others dislike, they also tend to have interesting "male" charaters, and cn occasionally have very goofy storys. However, if the story is very good it usually serves as a great devise for sucking you into the game (The story in Lost Oddesy really drew me in, I found the dream sequences Kiam had were very intuative and really made me more atytacked to the charaters as you played through and found our more snipits about his life). However combat in JRPGS can become tedious and equipment management tends to somtimes become a chore (Do I equip the Helm of Joyous Light to recive a +2 boost to personality when interacting with coxwell citizens or the Dimiad of Justice and get a +3 boost to conversation skills when conversing with Gorph citizens).

Western RPGS tend to focus more on a free-exploration world and real time combat, Like: Oblivion, Mass Effect and Fallout 3 (yes I konw VATS add a turn base sorta feel, but let run on the assumption that you don't use it). They also tend to have more character customazation, however sometimes the customazation inm some areas tends to be a little pointless and do little to actually change your charaters apperence (How thick is my charaters chest going to be, even thought it barley changes size when I move the slider!!!!!!!) Storys in Western RPGS tend to not be as deep as their counterparts from Japan, and while I am not saying a story is not present, it just does not go as far as some JRPGS, however some WRPGs do have very good storys (like in my OPINION Mass Effect). Equipment management tend to be a little simpler, with each object offering very specific effects, however you tend to get inventory limits (either a number or a weight limit). However what you equip tends to be a lot more diverse and noticiable in the game world than in JRPGs.

These are just a few pros and cons about these 2 RPG types, we must all remember that great titles have come from both groups.

P.S sorry for spelling and Grammer mistakes, I was tired when I typed this.

Western RPGs. They usually offer more freedom of choice. While JRPGs may have excellent stories I want to be able to affect the stories in a more obvious way. Also, turn-based combat is not for me.

Explaining why western RPG are way better than JRPGs would be like trying to explain why beautiful women look better than goats to a zoophile. If you have some kind of a brain defect that makes you prefer games set in the (more or less) same fucking unspecified world with the same fucking characters, using the same fucking combat system, saying the same fucking things and having the same fucking retarded hairstyles over games set in various places, featuring various characters and having a plot that sometimes makes sense, it's your problem.
Ouch.

Well, it depends. Both sides have their craps and greats, although I find that JRPGs are an endless see of remakes, ripoffs, and generic uninteresting titles, so it's hard to find the good ones. But the good ones are, in fact, really awesome.

What he said.
I just love how westeners cry over the feminine appearance of Jrpg protagonists (It's my understanding that these types of games are often marketed towards women.) and yet games like Gears of War and R2 exist where the former is nothing more than a closet homosexual fantasy and the later seems to be totally devoid of women for no real reason. I find most Western RPGs that I have played to be totally lifeless. I stopped caring about FailEnix even before the merger save for a few games they sadly have the rights to. (Vagrant Story, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Xenogears, Parasite Eve.) If I want to play a Jrpg that has a decent chance of not being complete shit I look at pretty much anyone other than FailEnix, lately it has been paying off in that I have discovered the Tales series with Tales of Vesperia, Persona 3 (I need to find some cash and grab FES and Persona 4, but arcade stick and repairing dead laptop comes first.), Xenosaga (Need to sit down and finish the second one and get the third one.), Disgaea 3 (The most grindtastic Jrpg I have ever played.), and Jeanne d'Arc. (I would play this more but using my PSP is actually painful. Can't find a comfortable position to use it in.) The trick with Jrpgs is to not play a FailEnix game other than the five I mentioned earlier and a few other outliers.

The problem I have with Wrpgs is that they don't have souls and seem to replace level grinding with an even more boring mechanic I like to call "Hai ghuyz wi gotz teh opun wurld, letz make u run around in it!" I swear Bethesda wanted me to kill myself in F3 with all the bullshit running around THE SAME GODDAMN UGLY SCENERY just to get anything done. Of course Bethesda is not the only one guilty of this, Bioware's Mass Effect (Mako sections.), and Cdprojeckt Red's The Witcher stick out in my mind as offensive criminals in this respect.

I feel like running into these companies offices with a speaker magnet and destroying all of thier computers and writing "Fuck your open world bullshit, it is all ugly crap anyway. Stop boring me with the same designs over and over again while you make it take ten fucking minutes to get anywhere!" all over the walls. I wish someone would make or I could find an rpg that has Western style quest based leveling over retarded wack-a-mole grinding, no stupid open world "Take twenty minutes to actually get to your destination." bs, a good story, and is not strangled by it's own setting. (Kotor would fit save for this last part.)

I like both types of RPGs. A good game is a good game regardless.

Can we get some more options added to the poll?

Fable, Dungeon Seige, World of Warcraft
NO! NO! NO!!!

Dungeon Siege is a hack and slash.

WoW is a MMO.

Fable is an action-RPG, doesn't count as other games. Elder Scrolls too, but it offers more customization.

No Neverwinter Nights makes me sick.

But I still vote for Western RPGs. RPGs, not action games with elements of RPG or MMO games where you have as much RPG as devil in the matchstick.*

*- Sorry, Polish saying. Devil is understood here as sulfur.
Some one need to be told what Rpg stands for. Rpg was a term invented upon the first release of dungoens and dragons, the table top for people who don't know what i'm talking about, which is where you roll dice inorder the play the game. Dungeon seige follows that as it rolls virtuale dice every time you go to hit something, so does WoW. Infact the only real Role play game that still exists is the current edition of Dungoens and dragons. the term Rpg was taken by most fantasy adventure games where "Role" had the meaning of taking the role of some unlucky person who had to kill lots of other people and stuff and play the game. But the termbased system from DnD was taken on better by the Jrpgs. So thats who I'm voting for.

Fable on the other hand, doesn't even hit the Action Rpg section. I would say its more a Fanatsy adventure game, just like gears of war is a Sci-fi adventure game due to its more commen use of Third person shooting and lack of first person. Plus in Fable is more down to your own actions whether you hit an enemy or not rather then does your stats = more then the poor sucker your trying to hit.

Again, no. There are no other options and if you just can't or refuse to make up your mind, that's fine also. Just don't. But feel free to add any progressive crit to the thread. I've really enjoyed reading people's views, even a lot of the retarded ones who obviously haven't a clue.

I've been playing RPGs for about 25 years now. And I've played many, many different sorts. The very first RPG I played on machine was A Fairy Tale Adventure on Commodore 64. It was a western RPG, open-worlded, action-RPG. And it opened a door. A very wide door.

I TOTALLY agree, Final Fantasy is the ONLY good JRPG, all the others need to stay in their own god damn country.

YERR I SAID IT.
