I say Mpm, but, when speaking to her from a distance, I say Ma.

I hate it when anyone over the age of 4 uses "mummy", unless they're reffering to an Egyptian corpse.

I say Mum, because I live in a European country. I don't actually live anywhere NEAR Europe, but I think of New Zealand as being European now.

Technically, New Zealand counts as part of Southeast Asia... o_O

For the most part Americans say 'Mom'. Those of us readers in England or Australia say 'Mum'. 'Mom' sounds completely retarded to me.

'Mum' is a Britisism first recorded in 1823 "Mom" is an Americanism first recorded in 1894. Both come from Mamma the English form of a word that is nearly universal in Indo-European languages; Gk. mamme, L. mamma, Pers. mama, Rus., Lith. mama Ger. Muhme Fr. mamen, Welsh mam. All mean basically the samething-'mother,' the word may come from a natural sound in baby-talk, perhaps imitative of sound made while sucking. It is probably one of the 'original' words. There are similar words in non-Indo European languages. In English mum is from 1823, mummy 1839, momma 1884, mom 1894, and mommy 1902.
the other kind of mummy is from from Persian mumiya "asphalt," from mum "wax." If you were to call your Mummy an old mummy, she'd pro'lly kick your asphalt.
"

Yea... sorry. 'Mum' is the original and the best.

Despite being American, I say mum and usually spell it mom. Occasionally I will say "mom," but not often, and rarely when I'm talking specifically to her.

I think this poll really boils down to "Are you American or English?" Pretty much everyone in Britain says "Mum" (unless you're from the Midlands) and then Mom is an Americanism.

I always call my mother "Mommy" but I always refer to her in conversation as "My mother."

And I'm not embarrassed to be a person over five that calls my mother "Mommy." My brother and sister are 24 and 21 and THEY still call her "Mommy." We all call our father "Daddy" too. Age shouldn't decide what we call our parents.
