Charmander, because:

[HEADING=2]Fuck yeah it's a dragon![/HEADING]

You just can't beat dragons.
I will definitely agree with that!
My Blastiose could beat that.
Hell yeah! My Blastoise (with Ice Beam and Earthquake) could solo his way through Agatha and Lance in the Elite Four WITHOUT being overleveled.

Squirtle rocks!

bulbasaur has the most badass moves. sleep powder, poison powder, stun spore, vine whip, solarbeam, synthesis, razor leaf, cut, take your pick...

Wait, are we talking about first playthrough, or most recent playthrough? If we're talking about our first playthrough, then Squirtle. If we're speaking about our most recent, then Charmander.
And for other generations
2) Cyndaquil
3) Mudkip
4) Piplup
5) Snivy

I chose Squirtle because the cards LIED and told me he was weak against electric and not grass so I thought I still had the advantage over Bulbasaur.

I mean that seriously messed me up. Like until Gen3. Since then I've been choosing grass, but only because the grass type has always looked the coolest.

When I first picked up my copy of Pokemon Blue (Nostalgia Attack!) I picked Bulbasaur because I was *absurdly* into dinosaurs.

I learned later that fighting the elite four with it was risky considering the first member used ice Pokemon.

Charmander is my choice, (s)he just comes across as a force of destruction, especially when he becomes Charizard

Bulbasaur was always a close second but the many weaknesses of a poison type always dissuaded me from using him

And forget about any type of water pokemon that isn't Gyarados

Charmander was my main man. First gym was always a challenge but by the second I had a good enough team to cover his big water weakness. Plus he was the most bad-ass evolved in my eyes.

Although ever since gen 3 I've always taken the grass starter. Gen 2 I stuck with Cyndaquil and by the time he was a Typhlosion he steamrolled every elite four member.

Charmander, Cyndaquil, Treecko, Chimchar, Snivy.

I preferred the Fire starters, but I adore Totodile to pieces too. It's always hard trying to pick a starter in Gen 2 for me.

Nearly always went for the fire type, because there has always been a sad lack of good fire types throughout the early stages of all the games.

Plus, CHARIZARD IS A GODDAM DRAGON!!!

I only chose Bulbasaur once, in all the dozens of times I played the game.

When I first started playing the game I used Squirtle a lot because it made the first fight easier, but I started using Charmander a lot because:

1. He's awesome.
2. It's more of a challenge.

Once you've played Pokemon a dozen times there's nothing to do but challenge yourself. Don't leave Viridian Forest until you catch a Pikachu, Always start with Charmander, stuff like that.

Because me and some cousins always used to buy it as kids at around 8 or something I've always picked the one on the case for Example of leaf green I picked bulbasaur first. but on the new I picked Tepig because it's fire and it's a pig!

My first Pokemon game was Silver, then Crystal, and both times I picked Cyndaquil. This was around the time when I picked Pokemon less for skill and type and more based on adorable features. And Cyndaquil was simply too cute to say no to. The fact that he evolved into such a bad-ass (Quilava, then Typhlosion) just made it all the better. So I grew to prefer fire types over the others. Also, I found that it is easier to catch Grass and Water type Pokemon, but near impossible to find a Fire type. Just my opinion.

The ultimate starter Pokemon, however, is Pidgey. In all the games where there was a Pidgey available to me, I caught him. Pidgey may appear to be annoying at first, with just Tackle and Sand-Attack, but Pigeot is the best asset to any Pokemon game.

Emerald: Treeko
FR/LG: Charmander
Diamond: Chimchar
HeartGold: Totodile

Haven't played the other ones. Given that Emerald was the only one I ever bothered to finish and the fact that I almost never play my DS anymore, I saw no reason to play the latest set.

Originally, I strictly adhered to strategy guides, and the one I had recommended Bulbasaur. So, the first time through, I started with Bulbasaur.

If I had to choose in each region...
Bulbasaur in Kanto,
Cyndaquil in Johto,
Mudkip in Hoenn,
Chimchar in Sinnoh,
and MAYBE Oshawott in Unova if I can't just capture something I really like (like Scraggy or Drilbur. Or Emolga.)

I didn't have a choice. I got Pikachu, my rival got Eevee. Eventually I got the other three through the course of the game.

In Crystal I chose Cyndaquil, because it's cute, and Quilava and Typhlosion are just forces of destruction in digital form.
