the law has already been passed in the UK, most of europe, Japan, new zealand and austrailia and with exception of the latter two it hasn't made a single iota of a difference. It simply restricts the SALE of a violent game to someone under a cirtain age, it won't stop them actually playing it if it is bought for them by a parent or guardian.

The above regions represent a not-insignificantly larger market than the USA and games are still made for and sold in these regions that are restricted (with the aforementioned exception)
Wait.Do you mean to tell me that the USA has no legal age restriction for Video Games, or other types of media?
From what i have read (though it did get a little dry after the first 3 pages so i may have skimmed over it a bit) the proposition will result in harsher punishments for selling age rated games to a minor. This is the case in the UK (a £5000 ($7817.50) fine and up to 6 months in prison)

if i am wrong then it's my own fault but however severe the impact will be i doubt it will pass. Congress will take in the potential (very negative) impact on the current, and very fragile, economic situation. They may not understand interactive entertainment but they aren't really that stupid (it's not like they're bankers after all)

This is not true. I think in EU that is against the law, and In Finland it is 100%
And if something like that would be even planned in EU Germany would go running up the barricades first following the rest of us. Mainly because USA is one single culture, EU got many each of them share different views about this subject.

Yes but it only has to start with one lobbyist. He makes a few !!! claims with lots of big words and 'scientific research' quotes and then people will follow them.

It may spread a lot slower in the EU and some countries may fully opose it.

But we have to remember the golden rule of society 'people are idiots'.

If this gets squashed now then it'll be fine and these cases will never get as far again.
But if not then it could basically say to people in the EU who are anti-gaming, 'Hey come on in, ban games'.

I'm sure you can see how stupidity and a general aversion to things that are different can propell this through parliament.

True and sad. But very few EU countries got lobby system same like USA got.
No offense, but I think the leaders in EU got bit more common sense that USA leaders. But there has been some alarming examples in UK... We will see.

But one think is sure, if the public image of violent video games get crashed the underground culture and Indie will florish... Since when banning some idea or art has killed it?

I'd like to think the EU are the bastion of culture and do everything with a level head and in the interest of everybody.

However I also know this is life and people in the EU parliament are just as moronic when faced against the public.

Scaremongering automatically appoints itself a leader, which basically equals popularity.

I hope it won't pass and if it does it won't kill gaming. But I doubt they'll have the huge budgets they have now.

maybe we could look on the pros if this happens, we could lose some very tasteless games e.g Manhunt (but is that Rockstar North or not I forgot). also we could find better ways to make games such as braid. indie devs may get the breakthrough there after. after all wouldn't ban ALL games. only the ones witch "have no value". maybe if a game has lots of moral reasons behind it then a game like that could go though.
No, but remember, games lose their first amendment rights, i.e, it doesn't matter if the game is obscene or not, anything that anyone ever might find offensive about a game will be taken to court. Some find Bioshock offensive for it's violence and scary nature. You really think it would sell as good if this would pass.

Those that don't are usually Japanese.

Japan doesn't translate and export 99% of their produce.

Do some research before making a thread.

Yeah, but can you honestly see them making such a profit when the US with millions of Bioshock fans won't buy it?

Dude, we Americans do not have total free speech, people claim we do but they are dirty liars.
Especially when it comes to games, lets face it, games are a farely new media form and are there fore immature to thge eyes of the people so it is more likely that people will freak out cause a game has sex or violence than a book or a show.
true, It has happened many times before and chances are it will happen again. HOWEVER something has changed now, the interactivity. true people only look at things at one angled views e.g Carns Carman Edit (or Bully) to an "advrige" person it looks like a horrible game however really it is a quite a fine game.

who knows in say 50 years we could all be shunning some new type of media and they will be having issues and talks like this.
Couldn't have put it better myself

I'm sure EA will be happy to fund Bioware so that they can make games they can't sell to their previous largest market. Or, you know, they won't, because the risk of investing that much money into a AAA title that may or may not make a tiny profit isn't worth it.

uh i don't know if you know this but europe is big too. most of the PC games are european while console games are american. this passes, consoles die while PCs live.
Not necessarily. Valve is US-based. If consoles were killed by this, than PCs would take a massive hit too, what with Steam losing a huge chunk of its sales. And think of the lawsuits that could be launched over all the 13 year olds lying and saying their 15 so they can buy whatever games they like with Mummy and Daddy's credit card. It'd be a frigging nightmare of epic proportions.

Dragon Age was published by, wait for it, an AMERICAN company.

But if you're fine with it, post a video of you destroying all the games you own that were made or published in the U.S.

No?

You like some games from the U.S?

Oh, I see.

Get over yourself. The U.S is the primary creator and exporter of video games.

You're fighting a loosing and meaningless battle.

No one cares.
answering questions before others answer it... tisk tisk

besides Biowear moving from EA would be a good thing. move to someone like... hmmm Ubisoft a better dev

This is a good point. But game develpoers based in the US usually have branch companies in other countries. So say American gaming companies may start to whither and fade there will still be branches and full fledged companies in other countryies, namely Japan, Canada and the UK.

Would be a shame though, you know who I blame the parents (shakes fist to the sky)

You do realize without the US market the profibility of games goes down by a significant margin. Therefore games are very likely not going to have a huge budget like Dragon age. So it really wouldn't matter where you moved Bioware either way it would be an end to any game with a budget.
