The count down page now has an official Vault-Tec logo on it. And ZeniMax is insanely protective of their intellectual properties, if this was not genuine, they'd have had this domain down by 8am EST this morning.
Some thoughts as a long time franchise fan going back to Black Isle/Interplay.
1.) Obsidian definitely did the better of the two "modern" Fallout adaptations but Fallout 3 was something beautiful to behold when it was new, that first step into the wasteland from the vault....I still remember it to this day and it helped me accept the Bethsoft adaptation of the IP quite a bit.
2.) Fallout 3's shortfall's were in the massive divergence from the western coastal theme that had always been part of the Fallout tone and timbre. D.C. was a wide divergence. It also lacked immense amounts of key plot points linking Vault-Tec to the US Government that it could have covered as compared to pushing an action based storyline focused around the vault dweller and their father and the Brotherhood of Steel....which to be honest the immensity of the divide and the BOS's first recorded appearances being in California chapters, it was kind of hard to swallow. FO3 lacked the depth it needed to really break out, but it was still...good enough.
3.) Engine, its always Gamebyro and it will continue to be Gamebyro, the upside here is that its entirely likely that this project has been built on the bones and girders of the engine that drove Skyrim which all in all, while still problematic is a large improvement over their previous TES Gamebyro engine builds that were ported over and used to support FO3 and FONV.
4.) Depending on how closely the content format fits the previous Skyrim model there is, potentially, already a huge amount of resources on hand that can easily cross port (for PC versions at least) with a little creativity to make whatever horrors Bethsoft releases as body/face models a bit less problematic.
5.) Over the last two years multiple highly skilled programmers have developed mods that have stabilized Skyrim to the point of being able to run a 200+ mod install with little to no crashing whatsoever, most of these patches and fixes will likely be cross compatible with FO4.
6.) Boston, Bridgeport....wherever this occurs, its still FO4 and as big a fan of TES as I am, Fallout is simply the better and more interesting IP to me. If they give FO4 the depth of story it needs to carry a long term open world experience, it will be very interesting indeed.
7.) Hopefully they hire more than 22 VOA's for this one. Skyrim got a little annoying hearing 20 characters voiced by the same person. Money spent on VOA can't be quantified in total potential profit returns but its the one thing thats made BioWare's stuff stand out through a very rough patch for that studio. They don't skimp on character immersion, hopefully Bethsoft has taken a few key lessons from where they kinda faceplanted on various parts of Skyrim and will show improvement for this title...and if not....don't worry about it, we'll take care of it like we always do (the modding community).
On a non-bullet point point, I am more excited about the presence of a web page with a jscript countdown app and an embeded sound file than I am everything ZeniMax has posted about ESO. I think a lot of true Bethesda fans feel this way....this is what we've been waiting for. ESO has just been a concern and a distraction.
