Rumor: Sony Fighting PS3 Piracy With Install Keys

Games might be, what, $10 cheaper on the PC. Tops. And that's for the basic edition which doesn't have the last few levels of the campaign, each level costing $15, oh, and most of the weapons aren't included for your use, the AI can use them though. Weapons will be released in packs at $10 each. Only $25 if you get all three weapon packs now!

End result, games are more expensive on the PC.

Look, I know you've got to be exaggerating, but what are you talking about?
I just bought Burnout Paradise, and Stalker: Call of Pripyat on the Steam holiday sale for $10 total, I can play them online with my friends without having to fork over an extra monthly fee for Xbox Live, and burnout includes all bonus content and DLC.

I just saw Alan Wake, a console exclusive, in store still selling at $50. That and Stalker COP were released within 2 months of eachother. If you can show me a retail copy of Alan wake (a game that continues the story through $10 a piece DLC) that is even close to $5, I'll put my foot in my mouth.

Im pretty sure the code can be used on 5 PS3 systems, and not 5 times on the same console, the same way activation goes on PSN, whenever you download something. Or at least i hope its like that, otherwise it IS BS.

Well, looks like I'll have to be careful in the future when I delete games to make more room. Pity... Just get a larger HDD I suppose would solve all the problems. Still don't like it, but I don't buy used anyways.

Sony sells both hardware and software. So a scheme like this hurts them far more than it does companies in the PC gaming marketplace. If people can't just pop in a game (used or new) and have it play, then people will quit buying the hardware. Less hardware sales will negate the gains made by killing used game sales.

But Sony isn't known to make decisions based on what's best for it's customers (see: securom and root kits in music cds). Sadly they don't seem to understand that without customers, there is no need for them to exist.

I never said that it was theft. If a bank got its safe broken, even if nothing was stolen, the bank would take extra measures to ensure that it's safer next time to prevent being robbed.

Maybe instead of blaming the company for taking security measures, you should blame the pirates who forced the company to take the measures in the first place.

I don't think they're going to do this. Well, I hope not. I rent an ungodly amount of games because I don't always have the $60 to drop on a game. If the game is good, I usually buy it afterwards when I have the money. I also occasionally use it on multiplayer focused games to give it a test to see if it's worth buying. If it is, I go buy it. However, if this came about, renting PS3 games will be a thing of the past, as will the second-hand market(which I rarely use these days).

If they did this, owning my PS3 may be pointless. I could sell it, get a different console, or just a ton of games for the Wii (or upgrade my PC). It just takes away most of the use of a console for me if I can't rent games.

Or maybe I'll just forgo all of my moral attributes and become a pirate. which probably means this would have the opposite effect.

Edit: On a side note, if the price of new PS3 games dropped significantly, I might still keep my console.

I believe this as well. Piracy oftentimes is used as a handy scapegoat when the real thing gaming companies are trying to stop is secondhand sales. Take the PC market for instance, ask yourself does DRM more effectively combat secondhand sales or piracy. Well piracy is as thriving as ever, secondhand sales, not so much. However, it's bad PR to say your putting all this bullshit DRM on there to screw over secondhand sales, and more importantly, your customers. It looks much better to hide behind piracy and simply lie about your real motives.

DING DING DING!!! We have a winner. DRM/Keys has not stopped piracy...at all. It has however crippled the 2nd hand sale of PC games. What better way to keep the money flow to you as the dev/prod than to cut off the sale of games 2nd hand that sends no money your way. It's just easier, and more accepted to say "Piracy".

Well seeing as how one of the flaws that allowed the protection to be broken in the first place was they couldn't programe a random number generator if this is true only 5 people in the world will be able to install and play a game on the PS3 because all the security numbers will be the same.
