So why can't we play as Daisey? She's cool enough to wear something other than a dress. I'm still waiting for her game Nintendo.

Daisy exists only to get captured by one-shot space alien villains and then play tennis. also golf.
...and race karts.

because she's a palette swap now >.>

*sigh*

Hey everyone. Super Mario Bros. 2 used 2D sprites. New Super Mario Bros. Wii uses 3D models. A 2D sprite requires no additional programming beyond inserting the image, while having a 3D dress that conforms to some kind of physics engine like the other models in the game requires some additional work. The fact that Peach existed in sprite form in Super Mario Bros. 2 does not make it any easier to render her skirt in 3D. Ok? Ok. So shut up about Super Mario Bros. 2, it's completely irrelevant here.

Oh, and if the biggest criticism of a game series you can come up with is the recycling of an excuse plot, in a series which has never pretended to have anything more than just that, then you need to sort out your priorities.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, I can join in the cries of "laziness" and "bullcrap". Not that I doubt that the skirt was a factor in not including Peach, it may very well be the deciding factor; Peach's presence in Super Paper Mario as a playable character has confirmed that Nintendo aren't afraid to give her an active role. Even so, giving up on putting her in because of a minor physics engine hurdle? That's just lame.

They did it in SMB2....why not now!?
Drawing a new 16x32 2D sprite with 16 frames at the most is a hell of a lot easier than rendering, animating, and skinning a 3D model, and rewriting the physics engine to handle flowing gowns.

That said, I still don't buy it.
Sprites are no harder to work with than a model in most API's, besides you can copy some animations from other characters if you're feeling really stingy. This is from a programmers perspective.

Edit: they could also just weight the skirt down to knee length if they are actually using physics on the material. That would keep it covering the 'naughty' bits.

Actually this sounds like a fair bit of skimping on the work to be honest. I don't like bashing Mario games since those are some of the few things Nintendo still does pretty good but this is silly to the extreme.

Ah yes, Nintendo story lines.

*cross peach* TOAD gets kidnapped by browser and you gotta jump your way on peoples faces to save him!

time for lunch break, end of work, holiday bonus and gimme my money.

I think shes just not as short as an Italian plumber and therefore doesn't fit into the theme of being an underdog working his way from an honest living draining turtles from pipes to saving a princess from a crocodile dressed as a turtle.

Or maybe some short shorts like in Mariokart Wii?
Actually you are completely right. She even has a motor cycle suit here. So saying her dress is the reason she's not in there is really aggravating. It would actually be pretty cool to have her wear a pink overall.

Orrrrr...pink gym shorts with a pink crop top like in Smash Football
or a pink tank top and pink shorts like in Mario Golf
or keep the dress and give her floaty powers like in Super Mario Bros 2.
or give her the spandex bikers suit from Mario Kart Wii

Ya know...not like I'm not obsessive about these things(?)
I think you have thought about this too much :S

Actually I believe it. They wouldn't put cloaks into NWN for years because of the complexities of modelling them waving around so it is plausible.

In the case of NWN (or Baldur's Gate for instance) adding cloaks would mean that it had to look good on each and every character. In this case however we're talking about adding one specific character.

Seriously, they had better not put her available later as DLC.

Yea, but it would be more enjoyable than. Peach kidnapped. In another castle. Beat Bowser. Save her. End.
They wouldn't need to change the story at all.

Toad: "I'm sorry, but our princess is in another castle."
Peach: "I keep telling you, I'm right here!"

Well it was probably called Doki Doki Panic when they played it...
