Maybe they could have given her some sort of ability that revolves around the nature of her dress. It looks like it could easily trap a large amount of air, so... Perhaps she could breath underwater?

Just a thought.

Hmmm, well I don't buy the reasons either. Though to be honest to start getting into WHY they might have actually made the desician would start turning things into a conspiricy theory and/or them making predictions based on upcoming probable world events or whatever.

"It would require a bit of extra coding" sounds like the most implausible excuse I've heard when it comes to a Mario Brothers game.

People People calm down. This is obviously a practical joke on us. He's just tired of answering questions so he starts playing with your head. "Umm no, no princess, why? uhh that flowy skirt is just too tought to program." snicker

Meanwhile they have programed in 18 different outfits for Peach and a new character Walapeachy.

Actual reason: Peach's dress would have to ruffle in the wind and the advanced physics of that would overload the Wii's hardware.

Okay, show of hands: Who tried looking up Peach's dress in that picture accompanying the article?

...

*raises hand*

And that's why we can't have nice things show Peach in the new Super Mario Bros.

Because cloth physics are haaaarrrrrd. Oh wait, no they aren't. The Wii hardware limits the capabilities of the programmers. Silly Nintendo.

So... They left her out because they're too lazy to program something? Not that I really care. I wouldn't have played as her anyway. I'm a man, after all.

Orrrrr...pink gym shorts with a pink crop top like in Smash Football
or a pink tank top and pink shorts like in Mario Golf
or keep the dress and give her floaty powers like in Super Mario Bros 2.
or give her the spandex bikers suit from Mario Kart Wii

Ya know...not like I'm not obsessive about these things(?)
Point being that the skirt thing is a flimsy excuse at best. As already mentioned, the real reason is Peach has to be kidnapped again for their to be a story, 'cause coming up with something new takes work. Although I wish Bowser would do something DIFFERENT, the kidnapping Peach thing has really gotten rather old. Just what does he want with her anyway, they've never exactly established that, just as they've never clearly established what Mario and Peach's relationship is.

Seriously? Because it would be too hard to code a skirt? What is this, the 90's? It's a 2-D platformer, exactly what complications do they expect a skirt to have?

Same argument several times over--do you really want NES graphics for a fresh off the press game that would use modern tech to actually graphically depict the movement of clothes, limbs, and weapons (both being used by and against the playable character)?

No! No, you most certainly would not. If they're putting that kind of concern and care into it, that means they either already tried and encountered the problem, or they didn't want to have a game with equivalent graphics to something that came out two decades ago. No offense, guys, but since the Wii catches enough heat as is for its shovelware, when the big first party games come out, they need to be up to par, and that means that they can't go back and play off of the old favorites that they used to haunt--they need to have those little add-ins that make it something new, creative, and worth buying, not just an old re-tread of something from the late 80's.

Hey everyone. Super Mario Bros. 2 used 2D sprites. New Super Mario Bros. Wii uses 3D models. A 2D sprite requires no additional programming beyond inserting the image, while having a 3D dress that conforms to some kind of physics engine like the other models in the game requires some additional work. The fact that Peach existed in sprite form in Super Mario Bros. 2 does not make it any easier to render her skirt in 3D. Ok? Ok. So shut up about Super Mario Bros. 2, it's completely irrelevant here.
See? You, sir, get not just a cookie, but a lovely brownie. All that lovely bubbles aside...

I'd say it's a matter of them wanting to do a reinnovation of a classic game, you know, they way they like doing. The game in question? I'd personally say it looks more like Super Mario World than any of the Super Mario Bros, and since the plots of all of those was more in tune with saving the Princess...

And who knows--maybe Shiggy has some kind of complex where he has to be saving princesses, or something.

Sadly nintendo is just being lazy. I suppose they have a just reason to not come up brand new programming just to get a skirt to look right, but still they are really dropping the ball here. They had Peach wear her dress in SMB2? why not here? Is it they have enough money already so they don't feel like paying some guy a little more to work it out?

*sigh* I remember when I would wait hand and foot for their games now... I dunno

Too bad about Peach... I mean, I suppose.

But whatever happened to those football guys from Super Mario World? You'd think they'd've been back by now...
At least in one of the sports games.

Okay, Nintendo has lots and lots of money and time, they couldn't spend a few weeks to fix all this up, I mean if you don't want her as a PC in the game fine, but don't say it is because one of the most well endowed (Financially) companies in the world couldn't throw a few guys on her so the rest of us can play with her on our Wii. (Might have been some inadvertent innuendo there, much apologies.)

Also, why can't they have Bowser do something besides kidnap the princess, and why does he kidnap her as opposed to killing her. Actually him incenerating the princess would be a great start for a new dark Mario game.

Mario: Oh a no! He kill the princess, I can't a go on living. *Runs towards a carniverous plant*

Luigi: *Grabs Mario on the arm* No a Mario, don't do this to yourself. Bowser is the one who must pay not you.

Mario: You are a right brother, I will make the fucking turtle pay with every inch of his life and I will kill any motherfuckers who try to stop me.

Luigi: Let me help you Mario, let me help you kill that son of a *****.

Mario: No a brother, I must do this myself... I must do this alone.

*Mario walks off towards a dark castle as it begins to rain. It fades to black, cue the tital. "Super Mario: Redemption"*

Yeah, I would play that game, I would play it a lot.

Yeah, 'cos it's not like they've modelled Peach in 3D before ever, right?

What do you mean there are three Smash Bros games where they've done exactly that, and she was wearing a skirt? Madness!

Well, two, since Peach wasn't in the original Smash Bros.

In any case, I said nothing about Nintendo having never done Peach's skirt in 3D. My bitching was targeted towards the too-large number of people holding up her sprites as proof that Nintendo were being lazy. They certainly are being lazy, but it's not because they've managed to use sprites of her in the past and are arbitrarily refusing to do so now. If you're going to call bullshit on someone's excuse, don't use something irrelevant.
