"(just like in real life, both exist)" - So do various other sorts of fetishes - will The Elder Scrolls 6 allow you to marry your dog? (Assuming Peter Molyneux doesn't get there first, of course)
Homosexuality is not a fetish, and relating it to marrying your dog is yet another fallacy from the slippery slope. But, then again, I entertain no illusion I'll ever be able to convince you otherwise, no matter how stupid that argument is.

Having a game feature a virtual society which adheres completely to one side of a political argument is in and of itself alienating to the people on the other side of the argument. Imagine if Deus Ex: Human Revolution for some reason were to feature the ability to convert to Christianity (just Christianity, mind - not Islam or Hinduism, for the sake of discussion) with the resulting abilities to pray to recover health faster, summon guardian angels to fight for you, and return from the dead. Even assuming this was perfectly balanced, the mere presence of such a one-sided politico-religious world element in (a non-niche) game would likely be met with derision, scorn, and hatred from atheist gamers worldwide.
Funny, I must have clearly despised playing Darksiders then, right? Or watching Kingdom of Heaven? Oh wait, no I didn't..

Thus, just as Oblivion quickly obtained mods allowing homosexual relationships (opening a previously one-sided game to players of all stripes, albeit even heterosexual relationships were implemented with mods), so too will Skyrim - to remove them. And thus my escapism will once more peaceably agree with my political viewpoint. I don't see the issue here.
I think it's telling enough that you cannot see the issue when you will only subscribe yourself to one side of a political situation, and refuse to have anything to do whatsoever with anything that deviates from such comfortabilities. Or in other words, acting like a child.

So long as my partner isn't dead weight I love the idea. Let them fight (and I don't mean just swing a sword in the general direction of the enemy, I mean actually contribute to the fight) or at least carry some left over equipment.

Whatever it is, I'm sure it will pan out nicely, I doubt they would include something useless into the game just for the sake of having it...

I wonder when polygamy will be allowed in a game. I'm not a fan of it irl but I'd be curious how that'd play out in a game.
Polygamy was allowed in the first fable if I'm not mistaken. You could have one wife in each city.

Why does there even need to be marriage in Skyrim to begin with? In Oblivion you were a lone wolf hero. Sure, you could own houses, towers, and kingdoms, but it doesn't make sense to tag along a wife or husband (or now "partner") into keeps to only attract more vampires and undead.
Role Playing Games are about playing a bloody roll. You saw your character as a lone wolf. Personally, I got a female mage apprentice to chill out in my house as if she was my wife. Role play.

Really pleased with this option. A lot of good news coming out about Bethesda recently. Just hope I don't hear any bad PR like them crushing down on DRM with always-on connection requirement or something depressing like that. Seems like every other big release title this year has got some form of thrashing for crappy decisions lately.

I'm glad Bethesda got their models sorted out though. They looked downright creepy in the last game, I mean it was simply impossible to make a character that didn't look a bit...special. Makes the prospect of 'marriage' in the game a little more desirable I guess. Does anyone know if the leveling system is getting changed? I didn't like doing redundant tasks like casting and jumping for the hell of it, just to get the max number of points to spend at each level up.

Elder Scrolls spouses, regardless of gender, aren't just for show in Skyrim. By wooing NPCs, players can complete relationship-boosting tasks, find a roommate for the new 3,000-gold house they bought in Dawnstar, and even get a traveling companion for those lonely late-night dungeon crawls.
Usually I don't bother with in game romances, but this is actually really cool. Skyrim keeps sounding better and better the more I hear about it. And also I can marry men! LOTS AND LOTS OF MEN!

which is cool because... you know social progression and all that jazz.

Meh, have yet to play a western RPG with any actual interesting relationship this generation (well, okay there was Sten). Guess this will make it easier for modders to make companions though.

I'm so glad game studios are maturing to do stuff like this. Lionhead, Bioware, and Bethesda plus more studios are showing that games can easily be mater about these things.

I just hope we'll be able to romance more key characters with interesting backgrounds. The reason why I didn't like romance in the Fable games was because it was superficial and boring. And because they used the same motions for males and females. Your femHero would go in to kiss her husband and guess what? She'd grab him by the waist and bend him back like he was some dainty princess.
Incredibly emasculating and annoying.

I just told my brother the lead to this article as a joke:
People say if you legalize gay marriage people will want to marry animals, and in Skyrim now you can! LOL!
But my mom overheard and started yelling stuff like, "wait you're looking forward to same-sex marriage in games?" I had to yell louder then her to explain the joke.
I know you grew up in Deliverence-ville, mom
But what the fuck?

Now, Bethesda, what about polygamy? Because you would go up to the level of just under a minor deity if I could get me a Elder Scrolls harem going.

I'm not even going to touch this one; it's way too easy.

There better not be a 360 achievement for gay marriage.
Oh, but you know there will be. There will likely also be one for traditional marriage and, marrying outside of your species (ie; a human marrying an Argonian or a Khajit marrying a Dunmer)

I still can't wait for this. My main characters will either remain single or, end up murdering their spouse (which will likely be a Dark Brotherhood quest)

Do you get bonuses for each spouse? Because it would be funny as hell to try and marry everyone in the city to get superpowers xD

Oh ya serious discussion. Good work with the openmindedness. *Thumbs up*

You know what they say; once you allow gay marriage, next thing you know people will be marrying lizards and cats. Oh, wait ...

LOL!!!

I wonder how much of your adventures and how helpful your mate will be in the game. Both Fable and Dragon Age has marriage but it doesn't tend to help you much. It would be interesting to have a game where you could play the lone traveler or be a part of a exploring duo. I will be interested to see how good the AI will be for this and if your choice affects the entire game or just one or two scenarios.
