Nothin' witty to say. Just...go Bethesda, fuck yeah, this is 100% unambiguously good. In fairness, my hat still goes off to BioWare too for being (I think?) the first, but by following them Bethesda are helping solidify one good step into genuine progress.
I think Lionhead got here first.

But anyways, I don't have issues with this so long as we don't have flamboyant couples everywhere in-game going on how great it is to be gay. I trust Bethesda to not do that.
Since you obviously wrote this hoping someone would call you on your impressive bullshit - let me be that girl.

Are you friggin kidding me? So no pride parades then? What the fuck does a 'flamboyant gay couple going on about how great it is to be gay' even look like?

Let me just say that as gay person, I just hope it isn't full of straight people going on about how great it is to be straight. God if i have to see two people of the opposite gender holding hands it just makes me sick! I'm fine with straight people as long as they don't flaunt it. I'm not a heterophobe but I just don't want to see straight people being flamboyantly straight everywhere i go. I'm fine with them if they can keep it to themselves. I trust Bethesda to do that.

(if you can figure out what the hell i'm talking about with that whole straight rant, or what 'flaunting' sexuality even means (surely you don't mean holding hands), then please let me know. You make about as much sense as i just did.)
No, I meant "token gays only there to show that gays exist".

You know, empty characters.
Yeah, so what does that mean? If there's a gay couple in a village where exactly is the line where they become 'token just to show they exist'. Why aren't they just there because they are there? At what point are they not ok to be there?
Well, pardon me for wanting my characters to have a personality.

And that's it - if they don't have a defining personality beyond "they're gay", then they're token. That's all there is to it. You can stop reading so deeply into my posts now.

Must we make sexuality such a big deal for everything? :(
I understand you could be talking about the big deal being made about this on the Escapist, whether by Mike or by the forumgoers, but if you're meaning Bethesda, may I direct your attention to the following quote.

"Not hush hush, just not making a huge deal out of it. You can marry anyone. ... not any NPC, just mean any male or female. Doesn't matter what you're playing." - Pete Hines, upon being asked about same-sex marriage, with an accusation for keeping it "hush hush."

So, according to Bethesda, they don't want to make it a big deal in the news. They just want it to exist to make the role-playing better.

I think it'd be good if a game showed some realism in these medieval - fantasy settings.
Gay/Taboo relationships having to be kept hush hush. Not in public ect..
Would add a nice degree of immersion.
Or at least the occasional NPC being disgusted with you.
There is no evidence that anyone in the setting is against it or that its taboo in tamriel.

A character or two characters that are gay for no real purpose would serve no purpose. They've got to be fleshed out. What I think lack was talking about was about having an annoyingly camp gay couple with no other qualities other than "we're so marvelously gay for each other!" I actually think that could be twisted and used in a clever way by giving these characters real depth (a back story, perhaps they're not really gay, or perhaps they're not gay for each other but have no choice; i.e., a façade) but I won't go into that because I'm not good at making up deep characterization.

I don't think this is unexpected at all, after reading the diaries of the Fighters' Guild son in Oblivion.

I also don't have a problem with it. Not all gamers are straight. Why should the characters be?

Holy shit!, run for the hills!, Fox News is coming!!!

In all seriousness, I don't see that much of a deal, if you don't want to see a man lizard being laid by a man cat, then don't do it!, that's the beauty of The Elder Scrolls series and for videogames in general as a medium, it's all about choice.

I was weary at first, but it sounds like they are handling the marriage system quite well.

And not as god-awful as Fable III, like I originally suspected.

Well, yeah, it's actually pretty important to a lot of people that this becomes an option. I would be sorely cheesed off if I could any marry in straight relationships.

I didn't have to read deeply your post was very short and clear. I just wanted to know what you actually meant, because what you said was pretty offensive to me.

I agree with you that a character should have more personality than 'they're gay', and I agree that i doubt that will be the case in this game. If that's what you actually meant then that's all i wanted to know. You should have posted that instead of your original post. You should be more careful with your words if you don't mean to be offensive. Your original post was offensive.

Frankly, with Bethesda NPCs I think we'd be lucky if they get even one personality trait (not counting Morrowind which did give everyone a single trait, dickhead)

haha fair enough! hopefully, they will just be two guys or girls in a house together and it doesn't count towards their character trait count.

Augh, dang it. Now I'm getting the wrong impression, and getting excited. It'll probably just be what pretty much amounts to an npc companion with extra dialogue that you can bring gifts, but the phrasing makes it sounds like it could be much more, like, where you'd have cool uses for spouses where you could use their position in society to advance in court, or marry someone so could ask your father-in-law for favours, or cool anti-heroic manipulative stuff.

I want to be able to play an evil fantasy politician damnit!
