As David Gaider noted when some berk complained about the LGBT relationship options in Dragon Age 2, "the majority has no inherent 'right' to get more options than anyone else."

As these things are by no means mandatory nor is their existence are detrimental to players who do not wish to engage in same sex marriages or marriages at all, then I figure there aren't many grounds for complaints concerning its inclusion, beyond petty, immature bouts of squick and dogma. And hey, if it does lead to a quest line which involves rescue or revenge, all the better for the narrative and immersion.

There's probably one for getting married at all, not specifically gay marriage.
That seems likely to me. Bethesda doesn't seem interested in making a fanfare about this - not because I think they're trying to keep it hidden, just because they don't see it as a big deal.

Sounds good to me, I'd rather see this handled as normal and mundane that a OOOO WOW! LOOK AT WHAT WE'RE DOING! attention getting shenanigan.

Personally I'm not a fan of putting modern day politics into my fantasy settings. It's not going to stop me from playing & enjoying the game but I find this sort of thing borderline 4th wall breaking and extremely lazy on the developers part.

A fantasy game such as this should be about immersion. If you want to put same sex relationships into it then either design a society which is tolerant towards it, like the ancient greeks for example, or if it's a standard intolerant society design the relationship around the trials and tribulations that actual medieval gay couples would have experienced.

Wouldn't that be far more interesting to play? Just seems all sorts of lazy to me to take what should be an intolerant towards homosexuality society and hard-code them to be gender neutral.
Why should it be intolerant to homosexuals? As far as I'm aware intolerance is not mentioned in the game and in Morrowind Crassius "Uncle" Curio is rather flamboyantly bi. Though he is a sexual harrassment case waiting to happen.

Fair move I guess. I'm all for gay marriage. Gay marriage has been present in countless civilizations before our own, so why isn't it more accepting in our own?

I can't wait to see all of the bigot politicians try to rip this apart.

Not my cup of tea, but It is good to have the options. To long has our medium tap danced around the issue.

WoW... That's how many articles about Skyrim per day?

OT: They did it the right way: They didn't make a big deal out of it, but when asked by fans, they answered.
not enough....

Wow. This actually surprises me quite a bit.
Here I was thinking Bioware had an advantage over Bethesda but now they're adding relationships into the mix.... fuck yeah.
Nothing else to say really. Just... yeah, I'm going to be loving this game.
Can I give Bethesda my money yet? >.>

This is one of those rare posts that really make me laugh earnestly =)

OT: I like that same-sex relationships are in the game, that they are optional (for those who are easily offended), and the overall tone of Bethesda's answer. Classy move, in a time where irrationality runs amok.

And remember: next time that Naked Orc you met in the wilderness starts Unarmed combat with you, it could be... love.

1st off, I am going to avoid commenting, since I am not gay and would rather not offend people.

2ndly I am glad Bethesda is making the Relationships in the Skyrim interesting, I hope its going to be as good as they did it in ME 2.

Must we make sexuality such a big deal for everything? :(
Problem is: Sexuality IS a big deal. Always was, always will be (I hope). It is one of the few things that concerns all chromosome--sporting beings in the planet.

Sadly, we live in a time where it is a bad thing, full of negative undertones. But that doesn't change the fact that it is one of the main driving forces in life. All lives.

Nothin' witty to say. Just...go Bethesda, fuck yeah, this is 100% unambiguously good. In fairness, my hat still goes off to BioWare too for being (I think?) the first, but by following them Bethesda are helping solidify one good step into genuine progress.
I think Lionhead got here first.

But anyways, I don't have issues with this so long as we don't have flamboyant couples everywhere in-game going on how great it is to be gay. I trust Bethesda to not do that.
Since you obviously wrote this hoping someone would call you on your impressive bullshit - let me be that girl.

Are you friggin kidding me? So no pride parades then? What the fuck does a 'flamboyant gay couple going on about how great it is to be gay' even look like?

Let me just say that as gay person, I just hope it isn't full of straight people going on about how great it is to be straight. God if i have to see two people of the opposite gender holding hands it just makes me sick! I'm fine with straight people as long as they don't flaunt it. I'm not a heterophobe but I just don't want to see straight people being flamboyantly straight everywhere i go. I'm fine with them if they can keep it to themselves. I trust Bethesda to do that.

(if you can figure out what the hell i'm talking about with that whole straight rant, or what 'flaunting' sexuality even means (surely you don't mean holding hands), then please let me know. You make about as much sense as i just did.)
No, I meant "token gays only there to show that gays exist".

You know, empty characters.

Yeah, so what does that mean? If there's a gay couple in a village where exactly is the line where they become 'token just to show they exist'. Why aren't they just there because they are there? At what point are they not ok to be there?

Huh. Shouldn't be too hard to mod out for the conservative half of the nation...
I wouldn't exactly call it half of any nation in the developed world which is against same sex relationships.

Unless america really is still that arse backwards :\

I think it'd be good if a game showed some realism in these medieval - fantasy settings.
Gay/Taboo relationships having to be kept hush hush. Not in public ect..
Would add a nice degree of immersion.
Or at least the occasional NPC being disgusted with you.

This isn't really surprising, just good that everyone has options to suit them.
Slightly scared as to what the result of an or an orc argonian bonking a khaajit would be though.

Its starting to look a bit like Bethesda just ripped the good bits out of Oblivion, the crafting/mining from WoW, the levelling from Fallout or something, and the relationshippy crap from Fable.
With dragons.

Tis gonna be awesome.
