You can't fault them for wanting money,
No, but there's a difference between doing it for the money and doing it for the art.
There's no art in over-complication and stupid confusion. Art should be accessible to everyone, regardless of background.

If all else fails someone will make a mod along the way that will do what the developers don't.
How much you want to bet there is going to be no mod tools? Remember companies who were supported by mods are now turning their backs.
Everything I'm worth. Bethesda, and TES in particular, have been known for their incredible mods and at this point is a historical aspect of the series.
Bethesda thrives on their mod community. Take away that, and you've just pissed off a grand majority of their longtime fans no matter how good the game. Modding in Morrowind and Oblivion, and even Fallout are staples of how Bethesda works with their community. Mods are to a lot of people a part of the gaming experience.

I would be damned if modding was looked down upon.

Besides, I heard in a podcast somewhere referring to the making of mods in Skyrim by Todd himself. I would be surprised if mods weren't allowed.

What were Bloodmoon and all the other expansion pack? basically big mods, Bathesda won't shut down the modding community.

Heh. You'd think developer would've learnt to stop using the 'S-word' by now.

Because, y'know, clearly less numbers means that it's going to be a brown shooter for dumb people... or something. Apparently that's the way these things work.
Except replace dumb people with drooling mongoloids and thats how Dragon Age 2 Worked.
You're talking to the wrong guy.

a) I was being sarcastic. RPG snobs piss me off.
b) I rather enjoyed DA2.

You know. In the end I just think Bethesda is just trying to make the best game they can. Yes you may not agree with their decisions right now, but you never know. What you thought was a terrible idea really might make the game better, and even if it didn't for you, it might have for someone else. It is impossible to please everyone. I don't see the logic in people freaking out and saying they won't buy this game just because it's not exactly what you wanted. I think a lot of people who say that are going to end up buying it because Bethesda just makes good games.

I'm only defending Skyrim on the basis that it's not going to be as bad as some people think, not because I'm a "fanboy" or whatever else.
And how did you come to that conclusion?
The game is not even released and you still are thinking it is the second coming of christ.
Also, if you hate confusion then manuals do exist. Why should everyone suffer because of some bloke who could not understand the use of conjuration, athletics or acrobatics

Honestly, I don't really care. I'm more interested in the world than in min-maxing my character.

Morrowind is hardly overcomplicated.
People just bitched because they had to actually read the journal to find anything.

I miss daggerfall and its 'damage from sunlight', 'allergic to silver' and 'regenerating when submerged in water' character creation options.
I totally love daggerfall for its gameplay. It was exceptionally good balanced, challenging and detailed. Kind of makes me wonder why they butchered the system for Morrowind.

This won't affect my decision to buy Skyrim at all. I have faith in Bethesda, and if they say it will be better, I agree. Call me a sheep if you want, I couldn't care less.
Sheep! Sheep! Baa, baa, Mr. Sheep!

Just kidding. I don't have 'faith' in Bethesda, but I have a high level of confidence in their ability to make a game not-suck. So go, go Team Bethesda!

Eh. I liked complexity, personally. I'll still buy skyrim, but I feel removing elements like this, regardless of the rationalization, reduces replay value. What the hell, if it turns out to be a terrible design decision I'll just mod the bloody thing.

No matter how complex or simple it gets its basically going to boil down to the elite fans bnarrowing it down to several builds that everyone must follow or otherwise be at risk of being banished from the world and being called a noob.

Hrm. Begrudgingly, have to admit this is a good decision in principle.

TES games are not suited to playing the first 3 hours repeatedly trying to get your character class just right when there are 600 hours of content waiting to be explored. If this is done right, it could be great.

Well mass effects 2's weapon streamline messed up my original tactics and made it more of a run and gun that messed up my characters style.

So I am a little unsure on how to take this. I suppose I will have to change Skyrim from an instant buy to a wait and see since the armor is a small thing to me but I am unsure what else will be streamlined down to the level of stupid or not.

Well of course it's still going to seel well, Bethesda have like the biggest following of fanboys/girls it isn't funny.

Just slap "Elder Scrolls" in the title, put some pretty graphics in the game, say that it is made by Bethesda and bang, heaps of sales.

Yeah! Fuck new players who might want to join the fun! I say if you haven't played TES since Arena then fuck you, you don't deserve Skyrim! Go play something more your speed like Asteroids you simpletons.

You're right that new players should feel welcome, but that doesn't mean that Bethesda should hurt their fans. Unfortunately, it seems that that's exactly what they're doing.

People stating that Bethesda's dumbing down Skyrim have a lot of good points to back up the claim.

I played Oblivion before I played Morrowind. I didn't have a problem understanding the skills in either game, though some skills weren't very powerful. (Conjuration being a prime example.)

If it truly was the case that players were not able to understand the skills or their impact, they could describe the complexity of those skills or show you. Much in the same way you don't sell a car for scrap when you dent the door, you do not get rid of skills because some were confused about their purpose.

To sum this all up though, it's all Bethesda-Speak. They promise you they're making a god in video game form (radiant AI/non-scripted - E3 Oblivion), and they give you a shadow of it.

The game will probably be good, but not as good as they're talking about.
