Lolz, and my ps3 friends were calling me silly for having an xbox because all microsoft did was grab money.

Then sony do this XD
yeah but its not essential to play ps2 games to fully enjoy the ps3, whereas we dont have to buy wireless network adapters just to go online, as well as online membership, and battery packs just to charge the controller, microsoft still a bit worse for the money side, lesser of 2 giant corporate evils

I don't care, i really don't have an opinion on it. Its just made me laugh at the timing of it.

Plus, wired controllers and an ethernet cable sort out two problems. And sony have been building up to an online membership and have said so. I'm waiting for that day so the console wars in all their futility ends.

Then what would I do with my old ps2? this is stupid...like another poster said, if you have ps2 games then chances are you have a ps2...why buy something twice, especially when its just old tech that will never get new games?

You do know that PSN+ was released some weeks,if not a couple of months ago, right? And that it is purely optional.

Wow, I'm surprised to see so much hate on this thing considering how pro backwards compatibility the comments usually are here.

I'll by one if it's less than $100 for my slim.

There's so many advantages to this over using an actual PS2. Higher res, faster load times, HDD saves, using less/better connections on the TV, decent rechargeable wireless controllers and fewer lying around, access to PSN messaging (theoretically, I don't think you could access the XMB from PS2 games on the old systems), save space on the TV stand, less electricity usage (PS3 and PS2 both draw power when "off"), possibility of PS2 games for download on PSN, not having to worry about multiple optical audio cables (I already have 3 between my PS3, 360, and HTPC).

And for those claiming they're selling something that used to be "free." It wasn't free, backwards compatible PS3s were at least $100 more than the similar model without. And now the PS3 slim has more space, uses less power, and is half the price. You can hardly say it was free.

I've been saying they should so something like this for years, though my original suggestion was having designed the old fats with a slot for an internal component to do it which they obviously didn't do. I'm not sure how they would do this though, I don't think USB is any where near fast enough for this nor does it provide enough power for a external CPU/GPU combo. I hope this thing is being planned for actual release, but I question if it's for current models of the PS3 given the limitations of USB. Maybe it uses multiple USB ports or uses external power and handles 100% of the processing on the external box and only streams video over the USB back to the PS3. If OnLive can do that over the interwebs, Sony could easily do it over USB. So that's where my money is.

Is this really the best they could come up with?
I guess it's better than what I expected: ps2 games showing up on psn store and an update that "accidentally" bricks all of the backwards compatible ps3s.

I actually really like this idea :D

Presumably it'd be cheaper than an actual PS2. Then on top of that less space is taken up, you get to use the wireless PS3 controllers, get to keep the PS3 UI and don't have to keep switching power cords. Oh and those damn memory cards are replaced with the harddrive!

A lot of benefits there that people aren't taking into consideration.
Those benefits would be worth consideration if first generation ps3s didn't already have internal hardware backwards compatibility.

How much will you pay for what you used to get free?

Depending on the price and possible capabilities this thing might have + the huge PS2 library, I could see this working (in the "it's-so-mad-it-just-might-work sense of the word).

There were launch consoles that weren't the 60GB that were BC compatible. There were launch consoles that were 60GB that weren't BC Compatible (Europe).

"I got an idea, let's take out backwards comparability being part of the console, let them cry, wait for a huge demand, then bring it back for a price!"

I'm getting the feeling that people aren't thinking this through at all.

I'll rephrase my last post, the benefits over an actual PS2 are;

- Most likely cheaper
- Smaller
- Saves up on power cords
- Wireless controllers
- 4 player without the adapter
- Harddrive replaces memory cards
- PS3 UI
- Downloadable PS2 games!

Now tell me again why this is pointless?

Didn't they say before that they removed backwards compatibility because, outside of the launch window when old games are still being released and people haven't built up a catalogue for the new system, gamers didn't want or use it?

what about PS1?
Since PS2 natively included PS games i guess that this add on will include PS games too. Or maube they will come up with a PS add on for the PS2 add on :p
