It's not that it isn't better than a PS2 but it isn't better than if the PS3 had built in BC.Dexiro said:I'm getting the feeling that people aren't thinking this through at all.
I'll rephrase my last post, the benefits over an actual PS2 are;
- Most likely cheaper
- Smaller
- Saves up on power cords
- Wireless controllers
- 4 player without the adapter
- Harddrive replaces memory cards
- PS3 UI
- Downloadable PS2 games!
Now tell me again why this is pointless?
hahaha, no. Maybe if you did the sony defense force bullshit and compared launch prices of the bullshit periphrial and the actual ps2.Dexiro said:I'm getting the feeling that people aren't thinking this through at all.

They took out software emulation prior to the slim release. Most models of the old PS3 used software, and a few had native BC.Outlaw Torn said:The PS3 isn't backwards compatible any more? I suddenly lost a rather large amount of interest in buying one, and if the PSN follows the way of Xbox Live then I definately won't waste my money. If I want to play PS2 games then I'll just get a PS2 again, they're probably £20 now and this device will undoubtedly go on sale for four times that.
I'm pretty sure the price was reduced for PS3's without backwards compatibility. You'd just be paying for that price reduction.Cynical skeptic said:Those benefits would be worth consideration if first generation ps3s didn't already have internal hardware backwards compatibility.Dexiro said:I actually really like this idea
Presumably it'd be cheaper than an actual PS2. Then on top of that less space is taken up, you get to use the wireless PS3 controllers, get to keep the PS3 UI and don't have to keep switching power cords. Oh and those damn memory cards are replaced with the harddrive!
A lot of benefits there that people aren't taking into consideration.
How much will you pay for what you used to get free?
ps3s with backwards compatibility ONLY $599!! ONLY $599!! ONLY $599!!Dexiro said:I'm pretty sure the price was reduced for PS3's without backwards compatibility. You'd just be paying for that price reduction.
If that isn't the case then Sony removing that feature for the sake of actually making a profit is better than them increasing the price of all PS3's. We know they had some financial trouble with it to begin with, i'm sure they didn't remove it for no reason.
It doesn't bother me personally either way. Sony aren't perfect but i think people are too quick to label them as a big evil corporation and don't give them credit where it's due.
Same here. Instead of buying a new one, I went for refurbished just for backwards compatibility. I used the extra money to get a few games.RollForInitiative said:This is why I went to the trouble of snagging one of the original, hardware-based backwards compatible units.
They're letting me buy what I used to get free!? that they removed to save something like $20 per unit?! Oh boy! Whoopie!Dexiro said:Urgh, in response to every crying about them removing backwards compatibility in the first place:
They had a good reason to remove it. Even if they're putting it back on at a price it's better than nothing.
Obviously there's a problem with PS2 software emulation. The original PS3 only had backwards compatibility because it had extra hardware crammed in there, and since they had to remove that for financial reasons they're letting you buy it again as a peripheral.
Plus it will be constructed with new parts, who knows when the old ps2's will burn out. I have been wanting something like this for a long time =D Will pick up the day it hits shelves.Dexiro said:I actually really like this idea

Yup. Besides, a PS2 is a pretty cool thing to have. It feels almost retro. (Almost)dathwampeer said:No one would buy it. If you have to pay for a physical addon people with probably just go buy a ps2.
And in the near future, there probably won't be enough PS2s in circulation. Are they even still manufacturing new ones?OceanRunner said:It's simple enough to just pick up a PS2 on its own. Unless there are not enough PS2s in circulation, then it isn't necessary.
Pretty sure. If they're not, the most recent generation of ps2s will likely outlast the ps3's commercial viability.rockyoumonkeys said:And in the near future, there probably won't be enough PS2s in circulation. %99.9 sure that's not going to happen. They're doing an optional thing that you pay for, but the base online experience will remain free.Outlaw Torn said:if the PSN follows the way of Xbox Live
