But it's only being censored in America, right? So I have nohing to worry about?
Sad to say, but yes, you have MUCH to worry about. Youtube, Google, Wikipedia, The Escapist, Facebook, and a lot of other major (And minor) American sites are in an extremely huge risk of getting shut down permanently across the globe. They shut it down there, they shut it down everywhere. BUT, I will say BUT, they can NOT shut down foreign sites OUTSIDE of America. All European, Asian, Australian, Canadian and African origined(A word?) sites are safe. Maybe south American sites, Mexico, and some other countries may be safe too. The only problem is that all the best sites are American... So if it ever gets passed... Welp, say goodbye too everything you like about the Interwebs.
but I imagine another country would just come up with a knock-off (veiwtube?) and thats where we go...but yeah, this isnt a good thing

If this gets passed, then the americans need to overthrow their government as it no longer has their best interests in mind anymore. Only the cooporations that own sweat shops in other countries or who won't tolerate anybody saying anything bad about their company at ALL and cheat taxes by opening fake headquarters in other countries will have power. The american citizens will be puppets on their strings.

I don't know about you, but if that came down I would rebel. And NOT peacefully. Infact I would go so far as to say it would be your DUTY as a citizen to overthrow your government.
Yes thank you, someone gets it

I just had an interesting thought... if the SOPA bill can try to shut down websites by cutting off its funding (i.e. filing takedown notices with advertising revenue, like Google's AdSense plugins, et cetera) what would happen if they sought revenue through a company outside of America's borders?

Surely the SOPA Bill can't possibly grant the legal authority to make demands of, say, a Canadian business?

(Course, there's that whole DNS Blocking thing too, but one hopeful step at a time)

Being from America, I can safely say: American government is shit. I personally think that the government is trying to draw attention away from the riots and rebellion by coming up with controversial bills in order to distract the greater public. But, that is just my opinion.

I have not felt any more disgusted with the republic of our country than ever before, christ. How can you pass laws on something you DON'T UNDERSTAND!? For FUCK'S SAKE! They couldn't work it any better!? This means no more 4chan, no more forums, NO MORE ESCAPIST! No more Youtube, no more mods based off of anything else, and I'm pretty sure they'll make the retarded leap to NO MORE SHOUT-OUTS IN AMERICA! Goddammit, yesterday I bought The Stars are Left for Magicka, does this mean that they'll outlaw MAGICKA because it runs on shoutouts and cliches!? If I want to run through a vaugely Tolkienesque forest, armed with a healing staff and a tommy gun, blasting out chain lightning while wearing a suit of rock armor, OVER MY TRON ROBES, THEN WHY MAKE ANYTHING HAVING TO DO WITH COPYWRITTEN BULLSHIT ILLEGAL!?

And yes, I know that this probably isn't what the bill is about, and I'm jumping to conclusions, but can you really expect anything better from people who ADMITTED TO NOT UNDERSTANDING WHAT THEY WERE BANNING!?
Yeah, let's not get out of hand. That has absolutely nothing to do with this bill.

In fact, yes this bill is terrible and the people passing it have no idea what it really does, but it doesn't help if people jump to ridiculous conclusions based on nothing. Learn what the bill is about before raging, or you're no better than the idiots in congress who haven't read it.

One congressman said "If I had a dime for every time someone in the hearing used the phrase "I'm not a nerd" or "I'm no tech expert, but they tell me..." I'd have a large number of dimes and still feel intensely worried about the future of the uncensored Internet."
at least one of the congressman realized the absurdness of the supporters of this bill being uniformed and gullible, and supporting it on hearsay, without knowledge of what was actually going on. also, i assume he means by "intensely worried about the future of the uncensored internet", he means that he worries for it's continued existence untainted by gullible morons. if his condition of awareness of idiocy spreads, and people in control of preventing SoPA do so instead of letting it pass, the internet has a good chance of surviving.

So, Cable News may be changing its tune on SOPA, slowly but surely.

http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20111216/17580817113/cable-news-finally-realizing-that-sopa-protect-ip-are-bad-news.shtml

Though reading Dylan Ratigan's tweet, perhaps they weren't for it, but just waiting for the right moment. Either way, looks like good news, hopefully. Though they've missed their window for the NDAA, which was passed two days ago...

You know, things like this make me think we need a new type of government. All this just shows that the American senate, and similar organizations in other countries, is grossly unqualified to rule the modern world.
Instead of getting people into office because they have the money and the connections, we need a system were people rule in the field they have expertise and experience in.
Instead of old men with old money deciding on things like the internet, art, science, and education, we need people who work with the internet, who are artists and scientists, and who have a history in education.
Now I know that the current rulers have a whole legion of minions to inform them, but it is more then obvious that either they don't listen, or that the minions are just as ineffective as they are.

The bill itself is way too powerful. I do think companies should have a right to protect their IP's from 3rd parties, especially when said 3rd parties are making money off the IP's that they have no permission to use, but not with this bill.

i hate how the american government is trying to pass a bill that would have a detrimental effect on the entire world. Not only are the congressmen "discussing" this bill clueless and seemingly refusing to listen to people who are knowledgable on the subject but they're also acting as if it wouldn't effect anyone else.

The hatred towards america that is still being felt in alot of countries would just increase because they effectively said fuck you to everyone and blocked all the websites.

The way I see this is that everybody who votes for this is either retarded when it comes to technology or has been bribed. Probably a mix of both as a matter of fact.

Welcome to America, a place where everything is possible if you put enough money in the right pockets.

You kidding? Hell, one of the major parties actually hates people who are knowledgeable - calls them "progressives" and "intellectuals", and uses it to actually tar their opponents. Republican political battles basically involve a race to the bottom of the barrel.
I hear ya.

You know, EVERY time I hear someone say "progressive", or "the progressive agenda!" as if it's a bad thing, I want to walk up to them and say "dude. What's the root word or progressive. ...That's right, it's progress. Progress is a GOOD THING. It means we are advancing as a civilization. It means we are improving. So WHY do you insist on holding us all back? Do you miss the old caveman days, or what?"

Yes, progress is exactly what they're trying to halt with this bill. By censoring the internet they will stunt innovation because risky start ups won't get the funding they'd need to get going.
