Hmmm, well it doesn't surprise me that they want to move away from politics, which is the can of worms using current events opens up. They have beaten World War II to death, which pretty much means that the best place to look is forward to the future.
As far as what kind of setting they will build, I have no idea. Truthfully though I think it might be interesting to see them explore a more "Dark Future Dystopia" type setting before heading flat out into the domain of aliens and space colonies and so on.
Of course to be honest one of the problems I have with far-future conflicts is that I feel that if serious warfare breaks out at that point it's not going to be the kind of man to man battling that makes for good video games. This is one of the problems I've always had with this kind of thing. Issac Asimov's "Foundation" did a good job of making the point that big things generally don't happen because of single heroic individuals.
In the case of total warfare in the future, I'd expect a lot of Drones, lots of WMD, and the resolution of conflicts to be largely based on war machines and hardware, with the engagements taking place at ever greater range.
Weapons evolve and that's one of the big problems, most "future warfare" games come down to the protaganists using guns that are just like current guns for all intents and purposes, except look like they were thrown together by a toy manufacturer. When it comes to their hand weapons, all talk of their "specs" in the backround aside, the weapons carried by guys in Halo, Aliens, and other settings don't seem all that much more effective than what people are using today, especially if you've seen what some of the weapons we have today can actually do.
