This is just more proof that cops are freaking parasites that prey on non-violent criminals. Why pursue killers and real rapists when you can go after pseudo-drug dealers and people who violate the letter of the law. So if I call in a reservation to a brothel in nevada while I'm in california, I should be prosecuted for soliciting sex for money when I get back? It's legal in nevada, but not california, and this is pretty much exactly what happened.
You mean the cops that are just doing their job, right? Their job is to catch people who break the law. They don't write them, they just enforce it. Yeah there's a lot of really bad crime out there, but you still can't pull resources away from investigating other more minor issues. Would you really be comfortable if your local law enforcement agency pulled all its traffic cops to work on drug enforcement? The fact is, she broke the law. It doesn't matter whether you think it's a victimless crime or not, SHE BROKE THE LAW.
If you don't like it, you should write your local representative. You know, the guy who actually writes these laws. We do still live in a democracy.
Meh, there are lots of 'laws' that we have passed that we would be better without. Most states have some sort of law on the books about not selling icecream on sundays (the day of the week, not the dish). The 'age of consent' thing comes down to how idiotic your state thinks the barrier between child and adult is. There are numerous cases where some moron cops ruined the lives of an 19 year old guy with a 17 year old girlfriend by slapping him with a criminal sex offender charge, just for doing what comes naturally. The fact that she's so much older than him is slightly disturbing, but perfectly within their rights in canada. I'm sure most of us know about 18 year old girls who marry 75 year old guys. That is downright gross. If people are going to hook up, it should be because they both desire to be with eachother, not because of cash or any forced situation.
As for cops, they should be cracking down on the real offenders. Traffic cops are there to take down speeders and drunk drivers, not to ticket you for not wearing a seatbelt or having a busted taillight. They shouldn't have to 'fish' for an offense from you. If you were swerving all over the road, they should get right to the point: I think you are drunk, step out of the car and breath into this!
Also, there are real sex offenders out there! People who do shit like rape women and molest little kids. I'm not talking about high school kids, but elementary school. When you get put on a sex offender list, your information is given out to every busybody out there and you are banned from certain fields of work. The problem with this is the implied morality that is forced on us has just screwed us over.
Alot of people don't understand the difference between morality and ethics. Morality is very dependent upon the time you live in, the religions of your area and attitudes of the people. When people make laws about age of consent it is because they believe it to be immoral to have sex with somebody under the age of consent because they don't know better... Which is in and of itself a stupid comment. The mentally handicapped are never above the age of consent. You'll also find that most people consent to sex around age 13. There is alot of other BS about being your parents property and the expectation between marriage and sex... yeah, back to the whole religion thing, which really should be kept out of laws.
Now ethics issues goes along the lines I was chatting about earlier, with the teacher having sex with her student, even though they are above the age of consent. While it may meet the moral 'laws' imposed by society, it fails to meet the ethical standards we impose. Why? Because they are teacher and student. This line gets more interesting in college, where the age gap gets even less dramatic. Sometimes, the teacher is actually younger than the student, but that doesn't make it any less wrong.
While we have seen a trend of morally driven ethics, it's the ethically driven morals that we really need in society. While morals are driven by feelings and beliefs, ethics are driven by fairness and impartialness.
Also, btw, it's obvious from your attitude that your alignment is towards the belief that the law is infalliable and that democracy works great. It doesn't. It's driven by millions of idiots driven by fear and consumer greed. Lots of stupid bills get passed with idiotic little things tacked on in the fine print. Most of us feel trapped when we vote, choosing between saying yes to a good proposition and denying it to prevent the additional crap from becoming law. Personally, I see myself more of a neutral good guy, I see the need for law, but I feel myself being drawn by chaos because it better serves the peoples rights.
