Tell me. Why is Half-Life 2 your favorite game? It uses an outdated engine, its AI, graphics, facial animation - pretty much everything has been surpassed by other modern FPS titles. Narrative devices like lack of cutscenes have also been adopted by nearly all standard FPS. Depth of story? Nothing compared to, say, BioShock. Why would it still rate as your favorite?

I'll be waiting.
Because it has an amazing story and I like the gameplay.

Hale Life 2.

The story and characters...I just love 'em. The combat is a bit basic at times but it has come excellent sequences (like the assault on Nova Prospekt).

That's a really tough question I haven't spent any time thinking about. Either Perfect Dark or Half-Life 2, I haven't played that many FPS's but those are the most interesting I've played out of the lot.

Perfect Dark - It's very unique for the fact that there is a shit load of weapons and options to keep you busy, I don't think I've seen another FPS with an assortment that big before. Also, I like how you can battle many different types of computer opponents with unique abilities and throw in teams. The single player is also pretty interesting, it does challenge you in almost every way possible and same goes for the events.

Half-Life 2 - Probably the most exciting adventure I've ever had in a FPS game while I also had a lot of fun just screwing around and figuring out puzzles. Even though there wasn't anywhere near as many weapons as Perfect Dark has, the gravity gun and the lion ant thing are just amazing. None of these new FPS games has anything as cool as that.

*sigh* You may want to scroll back up. I mentioned HL2 as my favorite game. I was simply trying to ask ciortas1 why anyone isn't allowed to like old games. You're missing big chunks of this conversation.

Neither of you. "Favorite" is a slightly vague term in that it allows some flexibility in what values someone attaches to "favorites". Someone can value innovation over actual quality, and label the innovator as their "favorite", and they're not really doing anything wrong.

Not that I see it that way; I'll generally list what games I like to play the most, or what films I like watching the most. When I say that Battleship Potemkin is one of my favorite films, it has absolutely nothing to do the development and the language of cinema and everything to do with holy crap Edmund Meisel's score is awesome and holy crap Eisenstein's shooting direction and editing is epic.

I personally try to lose the confusion altogether by grouping "bests" and "favorites" together while respecting innovators as a different category.

*broken record coming through*

Half-Life 2, definately.

I felt like my eyes opened for the first time when I played that game.

Overall technical competence: Half-Life 2 (or rather, Counterstrike: Source), with the Unreal Engine sequence being very close behind. I've worked with both the Source and Unreal Engines, and in short; they are widely used in the industry for a reason.

As for the best shooter GAME of all time...it doesn't exist.
Seriously. Each game I've thought of, I liked because of its flavor, and could find glaring flaws in each. Without a firm objective basis for comparison beyond technical accomplishments, comparing each work to the other is unfair.

Metroid Prime vs Tribes 2.
One is strictly single player, while the other is designed to be strictly-multiplayer.
How does Deus Ex fit into all of this? Or a Modded UT2004? System Shock 2?

I like each game because of its distinctions.

Therefore, there is no "Best FPS/Shooter Ever". I list Deus Ex as my favorite game of all time, but really, that list is partly nostalgia and hardly concrete. Analyzing older titles as an adult has changed my opinion on many of them.

My most intense competitive FPS experience is still and probably always will be Unreal Tournament, back in those days. I remember this 16-man lanparty 10 years ago, where we literally spent 3,5 hours on a CTF match, which ended at a nerve-wrecking 9-10 score. It was so ridiculously intense it took me several hours to get back into reality after it was over.

The Orange Box. An epic three-part single-player experience that never takes you out of the experience with half-baked cutscenes, a humorous multiplayer FPS/hat trading simulator, and a short but sweet puzzle-platformer-shooter. Best thing ever.

If you wouldn't play it now, it's no longer your favourite. Simple logic.
Not at all. I find FPS games in general have low replay value so my favourite will always be the one that got me hooked on the first playthrough. Replaying any FPS game will always feel tedious to me, so this methodology won't work for me.

My favourite was MW2 (Mechwarrior 2).

With out a shadow of a doubt. Timesplitters Future Perfect.
The mapmaker + Multiplayer bots increases that game's lifespan INDEFINATELY!

I could actually play that game til I die, but my Original-Xbox and PS2 would both break break before then.

Counter-Strike: Source. Without a doubt. That is for multiplayer.

Half-Life (1 & 2), Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I just bought both Bioshocks during Christmas and have started playing the first game couple days ago. I like it as well.
