Man, why make it a female Link, just make a new Metroid game, we haven't have one since Metroid Prime 3.
Female Link exists, her name is Samus, and she is a badass ("less Zero Suit, more Guns to Shoot, Nintendo"). She's also proof Nintendo has already DONE this given how she came to be who she is.
All seriousness, I can see a case for having the option to select a gender at the start but Rule 63 isn't really a good way to diversify games. Supergirl and Batwoman (at their inception) were not good examples of creating female characters since they just do all the things their male counterparts did but now it's a girl, Wonder Woman was designed and built around being a female character, if someone made a Wonder Boy for her sidekick he'd equally just be a Rule 63 Wonder Girl take off and likely not very well made, while Wonder Woman herself is hella interesting. Modern day Batwoman and Supergirl ARE pretty interesting but they're also way different to what they started as.
I like the idea of more female characters, I just think gender-swapping a character because "Why not?" isn't it, it's just pandering. Also, bonus note, Hyrule Warriors currently has 3 female to 1 male characters on the split, Nintendo is really giving this whole female characters thing a shot..
