I'll prove video games qualify as art when you prove modern art qualifies as art. It would seem to be a rather silly label people apply to whatever they think they can get away with.

That said, it is rather interesting to consider that, in the case of video games, the efforts of hundreds of artists can go into producing a thing that is not considered art by some.

I would say that I have to prove nothing to that fool, but if I was pressed further I'd probably pick BioShock.

I would say a cool game but they won't know it. The only games people at my school play are low-life FPSs. I'd say Red Dead.

Tetris. They'll lose their souls to the blocks and beg for something else to get them away from that video game cocaine. Then I would make them play Crono Trigger.

Tetris is to weaken their minds.

I feel that a text cannot be art, and the moment a game involves narrative, it is then a text.

But it is how you tell the story that is artistic.

Art is simply human creativity. The expression of creativity. It doesn't have to be so deep and existential that only art snobs appreciate it. I don't give a shit what Ebert thinks, video games are art.

And by the way, what kind of psycho jock guy tries to argue the concept of "art"? Haha, I'm not buying it.

I don't need to prove jack sh*t to some random stranger. Besides...whether games are or aren't art...it really doesn't matter.

art is a visual, interactive and/or creative work. games can cover all 3 as well as a painting, music or films. if pressed to choose one game it would be 'odin shpere'.

Ok, so this person runs over to me and shouts in my face insulting me twice and none of this was much provoked my anything. This person just wants to be an absolute twat and I see no reason to waste my time explaining myself to them.

And I also don?t see why videogames as art really ties into this, why does that need to be the justification for having them as a hobby? I would also wonder why this twat, who doesn?t spend tine with games, discuss games, or has much to do with games (until now apparently) would even know about the whole discussion of videogames as art.

Damn dodgy hypothetical?s :<

In a different hypothetical or even just plain strait out asked on an internet forum; The Path or Okami are two that come to mind.

Games are to be enjoy, not stared at.
In a discussion about games and their role as art, this argument is strangely shifted. You make so that, in your words, staring cannot provoke some enjoyment? An art lover must indeed receive some joy of "staring" at a painting as you do in killing zombies or nazis.

READ THIS RIGHT NOW: I THINK VIDEO GAMES CAN BE ART!

Ok, let's say your at work or school and some person runs up to you and says "Hey nerd, I heard you like stupid video games. THEY CAN'T BE ART LOSER!"

Now instead of beating this person's face to the ground, you say in a calm voice "I disagree. Video games can be art, they can have great stories, and can have great meaning."

The person scoffs, and says "Ok nerd, show me one game, ONE GAME, that can change my mind."

So, what game would you pick and why?
"The art is in the eyes of the Onlookers." That mean what is Art for me won't be for the next guys. That said, i believe game are, and are right there with Literature. Different thing for different people, i guess. I can't stand Picasso but love Salvatore Dali. Can you blame me?

I think he confuse Art with painting and he clearly don't like them. What you need to do is to tell him what is art first otherwise, he will speak through his ass until either of you give up.

I cried in the ending of Bioshock 2 because it was so beautiful (good ending)

Everything that can invoke emotions that you watch should be considered art, besides something that happens IRL like your puppy getting hit by a truck and so on.

edit:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6l8Gbo8P6dg - just to show beat also allows for fantastic emotional response... again, sadly, you'd need to know the language :\

If you understand the language (sadly 'tis unlikely) and don't illicit an emotional response to any of those 4 songs (particularly the third), I'd pretty much class you off as a psychopath (mean that in the literal sense of the word, not as an insult :p ).

OT: Agree most with whoever said to give a definition of art that doesn't involve subjectivity, but in the spirit of the question/thread, I'd say Syberia and Syberia 2. I'd also agree with one of the above posters on Grim Fandango (played a bit through it again recently-ish, sadly not to the end due to crashing issues :( ) and obviously horror games like early Silent Hill/Resident Evil.

Also, really, see Extra Credits on horror games (since fear is an emotion and therefore scary pictures/movies/games are art) they summarize it perfectly, games are the best medium for it cause you virtually walk into fear yourself and not just have it shown to you, you're part of the experience.
