Well, I'll argue that this isn't so irrational, but still.

I am terrified of completely losing control of my body, like from Locked-in Syndrome [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locked-in_syndrome], sleep paralysis [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis], and the like [www.this_isn't_a_real_link.stuff]. That's why I'll never get into lucid dreaming: it increases risk of sleep paralysis, and the one time that happened to me was the scariest couple minutes of my life.
I want to get into lucid dreaming, but I probably shouldn't,, as I want to go into the Royal Marines.

Can you imagine, sleeping in a foxhole, suddenly I'm woken up because people are coming. We've been found. And I can't fucking move!

I hear that can be problematic. :p

Although if occasional sleep paralysis and the accompanying hallucinations don't bother you at a conceptual level, then you may want to try that out after serving. Also, thank you for your service, even though it isn't in my country.

[small]unless i've failed at military knowledge. the us of a doesn't have a royal marine corps, right?[/small]

Bees, Wasps, Hornets...
name one rational person who would want to deal with this thing...
This... this bundle of badass right here is the reason I am staying on the opposite side of the globe...

When i was a small child I put on a bike helmet that had an orgy of hornets in it, and so I got dozens of stings all over my head, face, neck and even in my ears and up my nose...

... and I have never felt safe during spring or summer since then...

I wouldn't call it irrational, but it sure as hell is a fear!
oh i feel ya man.. (luckily that THING only lives in Japan from what i know...) i accidentally "discovered" a wasps nest under the gazebo table of my grandma's place when i was about 6... i kicked the nest apparently... bastards chased me all the way to the front door...
Thing is, if you live there, then it'd be a completely rational fear. If you live outside of their habitat then it is an irrational fear. I actually used to be terribly afraid of mosquitoes when I lived in Japan, far more than the killer hornets of those tiny little mamushi snakes (although none are truly as dangerous a threat as losing your ID card).

It's just as heights are a rational fear unless youre of the rare persuasion such that heights not great enough to cause injury or death scare you.

Whales. They just...too big. I can't explain it any further than that. Whales just creep me out.

Being underground is another one. I hate the feeling of having several thousand tonnes of rock directly above my head. I was actually scared of Vaults in Fallout 3 for this reason.

Motherfucking Snakes.. I hate those slimy buggers, I'd happily see all kinds of snake (and other reptilians) eradicated from the surface of the earth..

Not being able to die in the face of extreme pain or fear.. the common nightmare I have is not being able to kill myself in the face of zombies or extreme torture (ie Hostel movies)..

bit of a weird one that as most people strive just to escape whereas my body instantly favours self destruct mode for all situations..

Also being kept alive in locked-in-syndrome or paralysis, just let me goddamn die, nobody is having fun just sitting there not being able to do anything..

Also creating noise.. I never liked speaking in front of an audience, I don't like people to be able to hear my music, I don't open the windows in my car when I have the radio on.. I can't go to the toilet when people might hear my bowel processes.. its tough to find a toilet away from prying ears..

Seriously, I'm terrified of squid. They're the spiders of the sea, except they're huge and will drown you for the hell of it. I'm just glad I don't live near an ocean.

I mean, look at it!

You know what that reminds me of?
This

Mine is Goblin sharks, there is literally a 0.2% chance of me ever actually meeting one but fuck.
LOOK AT THIS BASTARD

it gets worse! YOu know in Alien when the aliens jaw had a smaller jaw that shoots out its face? This bastards mouth does that!

Biking. The fear of getting on a bike, putting my feet on the peddles, and moving. Not the bikes themselvs, or even really sitting on one, but the actual act of biking. Thing is, I used to bike all the time. Can't do it now because I tense up to the point where I start to ache after a few minutes, and I have terrable balance on it.

Even wierder, it's not other people biking that bother me. Just the idea that I am biking.

I am fucking terrified of ants if there's more than 4 of them around me at the same time. I hate not being able to keep an eye on the little fuckers. Suddenly one of them is going to crawl up my leg and I'll flip out.

People. Much like everyone else, I sometimes experience fear of my fellow human. I'm pretty sure we all get this fear at some point in our lives though.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh, well I have had a lot of bad things happen to me, so I'm "over" those fears. Let's have a look...

Fear of losing everything? Check. Lost my home, car, pet, family, and was homeless for a while. Once you go through this, materials possessions lose a lot of their value, and you become thankful to have anything at all.

Fear of going hungry? Check. Went a long period of time without food and become really ill. Now thankful if I get so much as a piece of bread to eat.

Fear of drowning? Check. Drowned in a pool when I was a little kid, thanks to one of those now-gone rubber tube suits that keep you upright in the water. Only problem? When I jumped into the pool it kept me upright alright, the wrong way.. my legs all kicking in the air. I uh, don't really like swimming anymore.

Insects don't really bother me, neither do animals. I'm not afraid of spiders, but they disgust me. :p

I had this weird fear when I was a kid that if I were to jump around outside at night, I'd fall up into space. I got over it around the age of 10, but the thought of gravity reversing still makes me uncomfortable.

One irrational fear that I have today is open curtains at night. It gives me the creeps, not being able to see out, but people/animals/mothman/sasquatch being able to see in.
