οἱ βάρβαροι?! I think not!
THEY ARE NOT BARBARIANS!!!! :( *cries* Everyone insults Carthage. If only Hannibal was still around. He'd show them...
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of Rome, but they [Carthage] were not Greek (which by ancient Greek standards) makes them βάρβαρους.

I thought the Classical Period was the age of the Romans.
I got all excited that we were going to talk about ancient Greece and Rome. No such luck.
Your hopes fared about as well as Corinth circa 140 BC.

That's right, that's what all you Carthaginians sound like to me! Go speak your Punic somewhere else. Sorry to hear that you got razed to the ground, though.

Also, don't post that. The Escapist tends to frown upon slurs in the forums, unless used in a particular context (like making fun of the WBC). As much as most (possibly all) of us hate Justin Bieber, call him something else like dickwad, assclown, or bastard.

Corinth was always getting into trouble.

It was all the soft Corinthian leather the Romans wanted for their chariots.

I'm one of those guys who can listen to very nearly everything (except rap and some deathcore), despite 98% of my library being heavy metal. I like it. Especially when I'm waking up/trying to calm the fuck down.

Anyway, if anyone in this thread lives in Australia, you should check out 97.7 FM. It's a radio station dedicated to classical music. Who knows, you might enjoy it. :D

I have to admit. I've always hoped that public places would make use of classical music more. I like certain genres of metal, but I find it easier to focus on what I'm doing when listening to classical music. Also, considering it probably has the smallest hatedom in the world, playing it in your convenience store will probably do much more good than harm.

I'd be interested to see what you think of this music- it's reasonably similar and a bit of a favourite of mine-

I enjoy classical music for everything ranging from calm listening during a walk to background music for explosion montages.
Care to list your favourite explosion montage music? I'm all curious now!

I never liked rock or metal like most teenage guys. Sure, I listened to it, but I never really loved it. Then I found classical music. My god, it filled me with wonder as to how I survived without it. That music is true genius, and no talentless ****** like Bieber can even begin to be on the same reality plane to compare to it.

Now, a lot of people are snooty about classical music. "If it's classical it's bound to be good. Now I'm going to go to the golf club and have a glass of port." Wrong. There's terrible classical music too. I dislike the cheery stuff, it feels empty and shallow. I prefer quietly sad and beautiful music, such as the compositions of Ludovico Einaudi.

That's Ludovico Einaudi.

Now, what's your opinion on classical music? Do you like it? Despise it? Think it's boring, and prefer your rockin' metal?

If you do like it, who's your favourite composer?
<3 that song. It was awesome. Personally, I've never been a great lover of classical music. I prefer my other genres, but that song was awesome.

I myself love Beethoven.

I'm also a sucker for opera, particularly German opera.

Der Freischutz opened my eyes to the stuff.

I find classical music to be empty and meaningless compared to music with lyrics. It removes an entire layer of the music and conveys less meaning, imo.

I grew up with classical music, so yeah, I still listen to it (and when I say classical music I mean everything from baroque to more modern stuff like orchestral John Williams and Blizzard compositions ;)). I sing some cantate/opera as a hobby. I quite like Wagner (but that's because he's one of very few composers that doesn't completely ignore the potential of a singer with a deep bass, most of them just decide "Oh, the bass... hrm... either a main villain or a siderole as someone old!")

That said, despite my liking of classical music to calm down sometimes and it being one of my passtimes, in the end I'm still a metalhead ;).

God, the ignorance on display in this thread is nauseating.

First, to the idiots who keep trying to make themselves look more educated than they are by slamming others use of the term "classical": get the fuck over yourselves.

Yes, the "Classical Period" was a specific era in Western art music which lasted from approximately 1750 to around 1820. However, "Classical Music" is also a catch-all term used to refer to ALL Western art music from the Dark Ages to the present.

So yes, Einaudi's music can still be considered "classical" based on its pedigree and stylistic elements.

Second, stop calling all musical examples you allude to "songs". A "song" is a piece of music which specifically incorporates a VOICE PART (pieces which require larger voice ensembles, such as choirs are usually still not referred to as such, though).

Here, I'll break it down for the idiots:

"Poker Face" by Lady Gaga = Song

"Für Elise" by Beethoven = Not a song

Got it?

Third, to you idiots who say that classical music is "overrated", or that it's "stuffy" and just more "dead white guy" garbage: wow, just wow.

That's kind of like some idiot going on about how the latest Spider-Man comic has such an awesome storyline while dismissing James Joyce or Dostoevsky as boring crap.

Don't you morons realize that if it wasn't for Josquin des Prez, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Stravinsky, etc, etc just from a theory standpoint ALONE your favorite type of music wouldn't even exist?

And if someone can honestly listen to this and not be moved, congratulations: you officially have no soul:

It works as musical wallpaper, prettying up the background. I can be doing other stuff, but couldn't sit down just to listen to it at any great length.

Doing homework or something with that sort of music in the background is nice

This is a favourite of mine
I love this guy's stuff to =) And Debussy's, of course ;-)

I do love classical music - my alter ego plays in a semi-professional orchestra, and while I enjoy many types of music, nothing makes me happier than classical. Especially things like Beethoven's Eroica, Elgar's Enigma Variations, Barber's Adagio...

*sigh*
