1. DBZ
2. Not sure, I was 5.
3. No. It made me feel that all other anime was inferior to DBZ. Then I watched Death Note and Gantz.

1- 4 words... Tengen... Toppa... Gurren... Lagann... Yeah...

2- I was bored and flipped over the the sci-fi channel, just as the first ep. came on.

3- I was very disturbed by it. It really isn't the best anime to show someone who's never been introduced to it before. You have to kind of work your way up to appreciate its genius. Later, I heard some otaku talking about how awesome it was, and since I was just starting to accept the fact that I was an otaku myself, I decided to give it another chance, since they were so buff on anime. It's now my all-time favorite anime... there are some manga I like more, but no anime...

I think pokemon was the first one I ever watched... God knows how long ago, then there was a gap of a year or 2, then I found DBZ, and then there was a gap for a few more years, and then I found Naruto (please don't hate me, I still read that manga)
However found it subbed on the internet, which then opened me up to finding more shounen action style things, and then later, to diversify into other things although I still suspect my experience to be limited (mostly to good stuff)

Dragon Ball Z.

First one I ever seen, ever in the history of anime. I was about 10 years old, it was pretty fun to watch aliens beat the snot out of each other and guys make groaning faces whilst firing particle cannon hand beams.

My first would be pokemon.

It randomly came onto tv one day when I was heading downstairs. I asked my siblings "what it is?" and they told me. I never really got into the anime even though everyone at school would be swapping those pokemon cards. But I like to watch the SMTVlive piss out take of them doing a pokemon sketch before the anime started, that was always good for a laugh.

At the time I didn't have a clue what anime was, pokemon was the biggest cartoon in the Uk at the time because I think no-one had experienced anything like that before, especially kids.
After pokemon was released other types of anime was put onto Tv, beyblade, yu-gi-oh etc

My first anime was also my last.

I watched Death Note after the frankly brilliant film series and I just couldn't get into it. Not trying to start a flame war, it's just not my cup of tea.

Gundam Wing (ithink and I only watched bits and peices)

Well, it's a show about figting robots and I was a young kid back then. What's better then a bunch of huge robots that fight with huge guns and lightsabers? So intoduced myself

Did it cause me to watch more? No, Outlaw Star did that.

1) Sailormoon
2) It was on TV way back when the non cable channels showed cartoons in the morning and after school. Now you're lucky if you have one basic channel that shows cartoons on Saturday morning.
3) It featured cute girls who turned into scantily clad superheroines. They had me at cute girls.

My first anime was Astroboy. I was around four or five. That show was awesome when I was a kid. I'm not sure if it made me want to watch more anime as a result, but since then I have watched Gundam Wing and SEED, Akira (The graphic novel was better), and a few others.

EDIT:

S-Cry-ed! I wanted to add this to my comment but could not remember the name! I love that series. They got so ridiculously overpowered towards the end, and the show was so funny. It's one of my favorites.

Naruto. Saw it was about what it was, watched it on Cartoon Network, heard about other things, watched Hellsing, gotta finish Death Note, and I just started One Piece.

I've watched 8 frickin' episodes of One Piece and nothing else has come close to it.

1. Death Note.
2. An online friend was talking about it, and described it to me when I asked. It sounded interesting so I took a look and was pleasantly surprised.
3. It got me attracted to more anime, though I'm somewhat leery of many. I don't get much thrill from combat sequences or many standard anime tropes, but I very much like ones that deviate from the norm. They also seem to have a wider diversity in subject matter and creativity than a good deal of western programming (though they tend to look more similar to eachother). Currently, my favorites ahead of Death Note are Spice and Wolf and Monster.

Does the term "anime" cover feature - length animated movies, or just serials? No problem, it looks like I'll have to cover both bases anyway:

The first bit of Japanese animation I saw was Castle of Cagliostro, one of the most awesome movies ever to come out of Japan. I had learned about it from an ad in a gaming magazine. Anybody with a pulse would want to seek out more Japanese stuff after watching that one!

My first anime series was FLCL, after seeing a trailer for it that was included on the Spirited Away DVD. I found it to be a surreal, strangely hypnotic experience. (I love it - but have NO idea why!) If you want to mess with your mind, FLCL is the way to go.

Basically, that's how I became an anime fan: Castle of Cagliostro got me interested - and FLCL got me addicted!

Oh my well, aren't we going back a long way now... first anime I suppose was technically a few episodes of Cardcaptor Sakura (or just Cardcaptors as the dub was known) when they were on TV (CITV if memory serves). Then of course there was Pokémon for a while, if that counts, and Shaman King a few years down the line, plus the occasional bit of Yu-Gi-Oh and its various rip-offs, like Duel Masters, all on Fox Kids or Cartoon Network or one of the other kids' channels. But I didn't really make the distinction of them being "anime" rather than just "cartoons" at the time. The first anime I watched as an anime, if you like, was Lucky Star, despite being tempted by various more stereotypically shounen anime before then. I don't even remember why exactly I decided to start watching LS in particular... I recall something about the theme being used on a Dynasty/Samurai Warriors parody (courtesy of Nico Nico Douga no doubt). Loved it. Senogku Basara's anime adaptation sealed the deal. Been watching the stuff ever since (all those weeks ago... hah hah...)

tl;dr: If you're reading this, you don't care.

Astroboy!!
-It was on TV
-Yes it was good. And better than Hercules and Rocket Robin Hood
BAM! This is seconded. As for question 3, yes, but I only barely got into any given anime until Bleach (seriously). Then I saw Elfen Lied and Ergo Proxy. I still like Bleach, but...move down the bench.

1. Trigun
2. I had always thought of anime as Pokemon and the like and never wanted to get into it, then there was nothing to do at my cousin's house and he put in the show.
3. Oh, yes it was actually a while before I really got into anime after that. See, I saw a commercial for Paprika and then decided to start off right and buy several collections of anime of ebay. So it was like a year between watching the first disc of Trigun and then buying it and finishing it.
