My first anime was Astroboy. I was around four or five. That show was awesome when I was a kid. I'm not sure if it made me want to watch more anime as a result, but since then I have watched Gundam Wing and SEED, Akira (The graphic novel was better), and a few others.

EDIT:

S-Cry-ed! I wanted to add this to my comment but could not remember the name! I love that series. They got so ridiculously overpowered towards the end, and the show was so funny. It's one of my favorites.

Naruto. Saw it was about what it was, watched it on Cartoon Network, heard about other things, watched Hellsing, gotta finish Death Note, and I just started One Piece.

I've watched 8 frickin' episodes of One Piece and nothing else has come close to it.

1. Death Note.
2. An online friend was talking about it, and described it to me when I asked. It sounded interesting so I took a look and was pleasantly surprised.
3. It got me attracted to more anime, though I'm somewhat leery of many. I don't get much thrill from combat sequences or many standard anime tropes, but I very much like ones that deviate from the norm. They also seem to have a wider diversity in subject matter and creativity than a good deal of western programming (though they tend to look more similar to eachother). Currently, my favorites ahead of Death Note are Spice and Wolf and Monster.

Does the term "anime" cover feature - length animated movies, or just serials? No problem, it looks like I'll have to cover both bases anyway:

The first bit of Japanese animation I saw was Castle of Cagliostro, one of the most awesome movies ever to come out of Japan. I had learned about it from an ad in a gaming magazine. Anybody with a pulse would want to seek out more Japanese stuff after watching that one!

My first anime series was FLCL, after seeing a trailer for it that was included on the Spirited Away DVD. I found it to be a surreal, strangely hypnotic experience. (I love it - but have NO idea why!) If you want to mess with your mind, FLCL is the way to go.

Basically, that's how I became an anime fan: Castle of Cagliostro got me interested - and FLCL got me addicted!

Oh my well, aren't we going back a long way now... first anime I suppose was technically a few episodes of Cardcaptor Sakura (or just Cardcaptors as the dub was known) when they were on TV (CITV if memory serves). Then of course there was Pokémon for a while, if that counts, and Shaman King a few years down the line, plus the occasional bit of Yu-Gi-Oh and its various rip-offs, like Duel Masters, all on Fox Kids or Cartoon Network or one of the other kids' channels. But I didn't really make the distinction of them being "anime" rather than just "cartoons" at the time. The first anime I watched as an anime, if you like, was Lucky Star, despite being tempted by various more stereotypically shounen anime before then. I don't even remember why exactly I decided to start watching LS in particular... I recall something about the theme being used on a Dynasty/Samurai Warriors parody (courtesy of Nico Nico Douga no doubt). Loved it. Senogku Basara's anime adaptation sealed the deal. Been watching the stuff ever since (all those weeks ago... hah hah...)

tl;dr: If you're reading this, you don't care.

Astroboy!!
-It was on TV
-Yes it was good. And better than Hercules and Rocket Robin Hood
BAM! This is seconded. As for question 3, yes, but I only barely got into any given anime until Bleach (seriously). Then I saw Elfen Lied and Ergo Proxy. I still like Bleach, but...move down the bench.

1. Trigun
2. I had always thought of anime as Pokemon and the like and never wanted to get into it, then there was nothing to do at my cousin's house and he put in the show.
3. Oh, yes it was actually a while before I really got into anime after that. See, I saw a commercial for Paprika and then decided to start off right and buy several collections of anime of ebay. So it was like a year between watching the first disc of Trigun and then buying it and finishing it.

1. Though I should say things like Digimon or pokemon I will say YuYu Hakusho, Cyborg 009, DBZ.
2. Toonami was awesome and anything on was good at the most part so I watched and I was easily sucked in.
3. Yes but I never knew it was anime before we had internet so I would think they we're cartoons from America but many stations have a bad habit of ending the anime you like when it gets close to coming to closure but I still watch it.
I really wish we could have One Piece back but I'll just watch it with subtitles for now

1.Cowboy Bebop was my first series. Not sure what the first movie was. One of the ones Sci-fi used to show late night when it didn't suck(years and years ago).

2. A friend made me watch it and I really got into it after that.

3. Since then, I've been on the lookout for more Anime that I like. Sometimes I'm pleasently rewarded. Othertimes, not so much.
