1. World of Warcraft (Yes it's an MMO, but it's still an RPG)
2. Mass Effect
3. Mass Effect 2
4. Pokemon Yellow
5. Torchlight

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only RPG fan on the planet who thought Fallout 3 was a pile of dog shit. It was so boring that I literally couldn't even finish it.

I do not have a top 5, their is only one rpg worth mentioning.
that rpg is jade empire.

edit i'm very happy to see multiple people pick it too!

also may have chosen not to do a complete list because not counting sequels i haven't played more than 3 others (final fantasy, elder scrolls, fallout)

Knights of the Old Republic
-I enjoyed being a jedi. I think that's about it. Being a Sith Lord trying to take over the galaxy is too damn good a pitch to get caught up in glaring issues the game had.

Kingdom Hearts
-Best combat in an RPG, hands down. It was active without any of the awkwardness rampant in most RPGs. The music was great. The universe was cool. I loved the characters and seeing them interact.

Final Fantasy 9
-Good music. Wonderful characters. The story could drag on, but when it hit a high note, it really was brilliant.

Oblivion with mods
-Huge world to explore. Great way to level up skills. I didn't care for the plot. I was there to do what I wanted. Mods saved this game. The world is a lot more bland without mods, and the characters suffer from WRPG ugliness.

World of Warcraft
-No game has yet to create a world so vast and beautiful and varied as WoW. There's no game I would rather just get lost in.

True RPGs, no action RPGs like Diablo or MMOs like WoW, otherwise my list would look Blizzardly differently.

1. Wizardry VII: Crusaders of the Dark Savant (Dos)
2. Planescape: Torment (Dos)
3. Shining in the Darkness (Genesis)
4. Temple of Elemental Evil (Win)
5. A Fairy Tale Adventure (Commodore 64/128)

P&P (haven't done in years):
1. HoL: Human Occupied Landfill
2. WoD (1st Edition, Mainly Vampire: The Masquerade)
3. Rifts
4. AD&D (2nd Edition)
5. TMNT (seriously, some of the most fun I had as a child!)
You have me so confused. You name genuinely great games in both categories, while at the same time you name HoL and Fairy Tale Adventure. HoL just kind of makes me sigh, but Fairy Tale Adventure is always among my top list of games I hated.

Anyway-

Video Games:
Knights of the Old Republic
Fallout
Jade Empire
PlaneScape: Torment
Gothic

Tabletop:
Pathfinder
Rifts
Shadowrun
Star Wars(West End)
Hero System

Kinda hard to make a list, but here's mine:
The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
Planescape: Torment
Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn (and Throne of Bhaal, because, let's face it, you can't have one without the other)
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion

If I might add, I loved Mass Effect 1 & 2 to bits, but I don't truly consider them to be RPGs (well, at least ME1 had an inventory and exploration).

Tales of Symphonia
Golden Sun
Golden Sun: The Lost Age

Oblivion
Mass Effect 2

The first three are my favorite games overall anyway.
You, good sir, are a man after my own heart. Though I must put Golden Sun above Symphonia, personally.

1. Golden Sun (I count Lost Age with it as it's one continuous story. I also have yet to play Dark Dawn or I'm sure that would take 2[sup]nd[/sup] or 3[sup]rd[/sup])
2. Tales of Symphonia
3. Persona 4
4. Tales of the Abyss
5. Pokemon Red

Once I get around to finishing that stack of PSX rpgs I'm sure I'll have to make room in my list for at least Xenogears.

EDIT: There's quite a few games on here I haven't heard of and more I haven't played. Definitely going to have to check some of these out.

Final Fantasy Tactics...Just FFT. It's the last great final Fantasy Game, and any other RPG that I could possibly bring up will be dwarfed in comparison. The story is beautiful, with characters that are actually relateable (a rarity nowadays), combat was strategic, rewarding and fun. and it was a role playing game that let us effin' role play.
