The graphics aren't ridiculous? They are a blatant rip from Warcraft (which is ridiculous as well). I'll yield that the game is pretty solid, if not boring after a few hours. Also, a game like this really should have, in my opinion, a decent story (though as this game is basically an updated Diablo, lacking a story is fitting to the design).
I should have clarified that I meant they're not your usual Swathes of "Ultra-Realistic" Brown like most modern games, with their life like graphics. Torchlight's graphics aren't ridiculous in the fact they're functional, they don't need to look life like nor overly cartoony.

And a blatant rip from Warcraft? Oh, God forbid any game ever using cartoony graphics. Torchlight uses exaggerated proportions and less realism than Warcraft, it doesn't make it a "blatant rip" in any way. Chances are it's inspired by Warcraft, don't forget the makers of Torchlight have worked on Diablo and other games.

There is a story to Torchlight, but it's not story heavy and that's something I enjoy about it.
I will agree that they are functional graphics in that you clearly see what is going on, so we can see eye to eye on that. As for the Warcraft comparison, it isn't that it just uses a similar style, it uses the exact same style. One of the biggest complaints I have always had about Warcraft is the graphics are abhorrent. Same thing can be said about this game for me.

Don't assume this means I hate cartoon graphics, I actually really like them. Just some games don't pull it off quite right, and this is one of them. I will say, I don't know what I would change to make it better while keeping the cartoon graphics, but something really is needed to make the game look better (of course, graphics aren't everything, and with good gameplay I could overlook the graphics).

As for the story, when I said lacking I did mean that the story just wasn't much. True, just like Diablo, it does HAVE a story, but the story doesn't really matter. It doesn't have any sort of hook, and the only reason to go into the dungeon is to get more loot, not advance any plot or similar progression marker. I'm fine with games not having in depth stories, but a title like this needs a story. Without it, you simply are fighting mobile treasure chests and collecting gold. That is only fun for an hour or two (or to word it better, it is 4 dollars fun, not $20).

The game does exactly what it was intended to do: be a spiritual successor to Diablo and attract fans of that title. It pulls this off perfectly, as it is simply a watered down and reskined Diablo. If that is what someone is after, then this game truly is perfect for them, however if you want more depth to your game, and more purpose to events then this title isn't the one to get.

I enjoyed torchlight, not a massive amount, but i did. Although i can see why Yahtzee wouldn't like this game, he also doesn't really same like the Arpg type also but i'm not surprised.

I'm shaking my head in amazement at how many people here seem to be unable to grasp the concept behind Zero Punctuation. Every. Single. Video. there are at least a dozen people who have to argue "why didn't you like this game", like it's a direct personal affront to them if he suggests that anyone might not have had the same experience they did. Seriously, go right back to the start of the series on the Escapist, he says it right there in the Bioshock review: "[sic] people don't like me when I'm being nice." These videos would not be at all amusing if he focused on what was good about the subject, just like a tragedy would not be poignant if it had a happy ending. If you find this difficult to bear, then don't watch it, and certainly don't comment on it. Leave it to those of us who have the maturity to laugh at ourselves. Oblivion may have been one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences of my life, but I still laughed when he reviewed it; I wasn't mortally offended that he apparently thought less of it than I did.

Oh, and for those people who insist on pointing out the slight liberties he takes with the truth in the name of comedy, to quote Picasso: "Art is not the truth, it is a lie which enables us to see the truth more clearly."

So I'm only curious... with all the great games that have been coming out lately, why the shit would you review some PC exclusive and apparently piece of crap game that nobody has heard about? Stop being lame.

I wish we had a system to promote great posts because you would earn a promotion from me. I was the same about the Brutal Legend review. He ripped it, I loved the game, and I loved his review of it. It is a comedy video and he does it great.

When you love a game and he rips it, enjoy the comedy. When you hate a game and he rips it, enjoy great comedy. :D

I enjoyed Torchlight for the first 4 hours or so but now I've just kinda lost interest in it. It's left sitting on my hard-drive not doing much, and I've been busy playing other, better games. It just feels very samey after a while, there aren't any nice outdoor locations except one small town and the rest of the time is spent running around in dull, dark, grey caverns fighting hordes of monsters over and over again in fairly repetitive battles.

Torchlight rocks. My only complaint is that as a ranged class, if you click ever so slightly to the side of a monster, you end up running to that spot. Especially when the monster is a quick one that scurries around, you'll need an AoE attack to nail it, or wait until it resumes a predictable movement path.

Funniest ZP in a goodly while. I completely disagree with nearly everything Yahtzee said, apart from the nonexistant difficulty curve on normal mode. This game + steam sale = merry christmas for spindleweed.

To dthvirus, hold shift while rangespamming

You can press control, or shift, or something, to stand still while firing.

The game is fun, definitely worth it if you can get it cheap on Steam, it's quite good for a Diablo clone, and also, yes, the game is rather easy, but I enjoyed it, played through it on hard as an alchemist (lol), and hard quite a bit of fun sending hordes of minions after bosses.

Plus, it has modding capabilities, so that just makes it better.

Why is it that Yahtzee is the only show without content badges?
It's not the only one, ENN doesn't have badges either (that I know of).

I tried the demo for Torchlight and loved it! All the mindless fun and mobs is wheat appealed to me though, so I guess its just differing opinions :p

Speaking as a card-carrying Yahtzee fanboy,I happen to think the whole "but saying bad things in what he does" defence is a load of tosh. ZP's entertainment value, in my eyes at least, lies in sharp assessments on foolish or ridiculous elements of a game supported by wonderful, colourful language. If the man is spending too long skewering a minor or irrelevant point* for the sake of negativity, it's like watching a master boxer fight a weeble doll - faintly amusing, but not as impressive or joyous. If his criticism is factually wrong, then what is the point in bringing it to light. And being positive is not necessarily dull, if it represents genuine enthusiasm. Look at the Prototype review for a good example, which single-handedly sold me a game I enjoyed very much.

I agree people should be a little less sensitive about a guy who is honest about a guy who is not even pretending to be anything but rampantly opinionated (thank god "objective judgement" of entertainment is a dodgy idea at best) but pretending Yahtzee never makes mistakes or should give up on conveying his impressions "cuz its funnier" is equally silly.

*Incidentally, I didn't really feel the TL review was unrepresentative. The AC2 was the best/worst example - dissecting superfluous and pointless amounts of cash, a flaw of every game ever made ever, in reviewing a game that was supposedly enjoyable was surely a mis-step.

The whole using a pet to sell stuff back at the village reminds me of the game FATE, also for the computer. Actually, so does the village.
