Well at least someone has managed to snatch those criminally neglected properties off the alcoholic gambling parent more interested in NFTs than making games now.
Ah, another company has been embraced.

Also doesn't change the situation for those IPs as I don't think the Embracer Group has done anything with any of its acquirements.

Good, now somebody will hopefully do something interesting with any of those franchises. And Square has even less to stand on now. Before anyone starts, I know they will still be making money and they got plenty of other franchises, but the majority of those games I am not even interested in.

It was pretty shocking. If fighting games can basically have the same roster and gameplay every few years and still have sequels feel justified, a hero shooter like Overwatch should also be able to manage. Really looks like they just don't want to put in the effort.
Someone in a corner office is saying "Why innovate? The brats will buy it; they love the original." And I want them to wind up with the world's biggest surprised Pikachu face.

Lara Croft is no longer part of the Square Enix family. On Monday the Japanese gaming giant announced it's struck a deal to sell its Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal and Square Enix Montréal studios to Swedish publisher Embracer Group, formerly THQ Nordic. The $300 million deal means that Square Enix will no longer publish Tomb Raider games, as well as Deus Ex, Thief and Legacy of Kain titles.

Mileage may vary on nu-THQs overall release quality. But they at least tend to have interest in handling these older IPs with some decorum (if not always the talent and production amounts to pull it off)

Went back and looked at what THQ been up to the last few years, most of it has been re releasing updated version of old game, which I wouldn't say no for some of Eidoes stuff, but there's not many newer stuff.

In related news, they released some numbers for how many sales some of the IP moved, Deus Ex human revolution and mankind divided pushed 12 millions unit combined. Which square though was disappointing apparently.

Don't know how good this is really going to be - Supermassive have tried to recapture the quality of Until Dawn for years now, failing every time. But the amount of options they're seemingly giving the player with this game at least gives me some optimism.

Also, Ted Raimi's in it. (y)

Which already showed back in the 2010s, how over the greedy the company became. They can have fun losing all that money on nfts and metaverse crap. They still got money, don't get me wrong, but shows how worthless most of their collectors and special editions of games are.

They sold the studios too. Who is gonna work on Avengers now that Crystal Dynamics is gone? Oh NO!!!!!!

Anyway, they gave Embracer the studios too, which means the developers of these franchises will likely remain the same (like CD with Tomb Raider) which means if you are hoping for big changes to the games going forward, don't hold your breath.

Not that I care much for the Hitman franchise as much as I used to, I'm glad Square had the decency to sell the IP rights back to the actual developers themselves.

Elex, BioMutant, Darksiders 3, Titan Quest, Battle Chasers. The Gothic remake.

Kind of what I said, nods to classic influence. Ambitious ideas. Execution never quite seems to completely get there. You can usually see there's potential in there, but they kind of struggle and wobble with the polish and probably budget since they're indie/AAish.

You can also more or less pickup that they are actually invested or interested in what they're doing. Both in their games and the IPs they've been collecting. Its a very specific identity thats coming across. I don't know how you'd describe it, but like, a lot of circa 2000 nostalgia influences and "cult classic" tastes.

At least they try. I do think they went overboard trying to make Darksiders III be more like Dark Souls. At least they made a big update, that made the game play like the previous entries, and gave you the options to pick one or the other.

I haven't actually played Darksiders 3. My main iissue with 1 and 2 was that for what they had on offer gameplay wise they kind of dragged out well past their welcome (which would also be my general summary of Biomutant as that goes).

Like Zelda is a "RPG" allegedly, but they're all in all pretty short action games with some side mechanics. If thats your influence then you don't need to throw out a giant slog.

I 100% agree with you. That's always been the problem with the Darksiders games. Each game was just copying mechanics that were popular or then-popular at the time, and slap dashed together whether it made sense or not. That's what make the series only unique stand out aside from the whole hell versus heaven theme, are copying all these gameplay mechanics.

I will say that these games, more so the first two, or as close as you're going to get to a modern Soul Reaver/Legacy of Kain series. The fact the franchise is still on going and there are so many fans speaks high volumes, that people do care.

3 is pretty short even compared to soul game, much shorter than darksider 2. It's an okay game but nothing special.

Biomutant was okay-ish, but the idea of your character mutation changing them was pretty much a massive lie and what we got was a really underwhelming/generic open world game with the usual loot system. I guess my biggest issue with it is that after I explored 1/4 of the world I had already unlocked just about every gameplay system (weapon/power/feature) and it wasn't interesting enough to carry me trough the other 3/4.

From their other entry. Elex was kinda interesting but possibly in unintentional ways, the gameplay was really eurojanky which made it interesting because you'd get your ass kicked by most enemy and you had to constantly find creative solution to combat encounter and had to really scrounge for resources, at least for the first 15 hours or so. I'm wondering if they'll build on that for Elex 2 or if it'll be just be too polished to have any interesting aspect but not polished enough to be interesting.

I guess any owner is better than SE (well maybe not activision or EA) but I'm not holding my breath for another great deus ex.

What is eurojanky?
