But as a trailer, the Dead Island one strikes me as a calculated bore that ticks every single cliché box over the past few years on how to make trailers and adds the kid into the mix to scrounge up the edge factor into it.
Talk about cynicism... yeesh.
A cynic is just a person with enough experience to know better.
Obviously not a cynic then, because you've obviously not been watching game trailers over the last few years.

OT:

All I could really think was "OH LOOK A ZOMBIE, I'LL LET IT HUG ME!"

Zombies in reverse is just awesome

This will work better as a game then a movie.

P.S. I highly reccomend reading The walking dead. Not only is it a great zombie comic but also a superb story in general.

The game could completely suck, it's true, but piles of win to the parties involved in the trailer. As a stand-alone short piece, it's pretty spectacular.

I'm sorry, but no. No no no. Child death is never funny. Feel free to play the game if you want, but I, for one, will pass.

Impressive although last time I was impressed by a game trailer(Prototype) I ended up extremely disappointed. The setting looks interesting and it could incorporate the "Zombie Voodoo" themes of the old tropical islands.

Looking forward to gameplay. Found it funny that if you watch it on You get an awful advertisement for Disney featuring non dead children that NEED to be Zombies soon.

Seems like the game industry really has it in for children at the moment, doesent it?
But while we are taking guesses at gameplay, judging from the trailer it will be a zombie survival game with time manipulation, which does sound kind of interesting.

This trailer has caused so much buzz it's silly, I've seen loads of people hyped about the game but as far as I can see, the trailer tells us next to nothing. It could be a zombie racing game for all I know. Not that fussed about it, yet.
well there have been gameplay screenshots and a trailer with some gameplay back in 2007, but its probably gonna look completely differant if it has taken this long

1.I think it shows that games are growing as a medium. Interactivity is what holds back Child Killing from games but we need more games to take risks in order for the Industry to grow.

2. I think/hope that the time manipulation is just to make the trailer stylish. Zombies shuffle along slow enough as it is without time being against them as well.

Trailer's unique ONLY because of the backwards story syncing up slowly to the proper one. Otherwise...very generic.

Somber scene - check
Innocent victim - check
Slow, sad music - check
Short fast cuts to more violent - check
During the cuts, music stops - check

It's just so formulaic. Created almost totally be the book to tug as many heartstrings as possible. Still, it works.

But you could take almost any two things and cut them together like that and they'd look more amazing than they are. I mean...take a scene of a child playing on a jungle gym, in slow mo, accompanied by swelling music and intercut it with ANY random fight scene from ANY random film, and people would say it's an amazing thing.

I was thinking more along the lines of time manipulation in context with other zombie tropes. Perhaps the game could enforce it's narrative by having one bite turn you, but give you a brief window to rewind. Or same for other NPCs. I was only joking about the time manipulation thing really, but there are a few interesting ways it could be applied. The idea is unlikely, if not utterly silly in context with everything else in the trailer though.

Why does objectivity kill the magic?

I never said it did. I said it's formulaic, I never said it wasn't still an amazing trailer. Objectivity doesn't kill the magic, it just makes it easier to see through the magic.

I know my post comes off like me bitching about it, but I'm not. I'm just pointing out it's very obvious in how it tugs at you. But the fact of the matter is, it is definitely one of the best video game trailers I have ever witnessed. Knowing WHY it's so effective doesn't ruin the enjoyment I get from it.

This was a nice trailer, but the descriptions of the game that I've read make me think this will simply be a mash up of Dead Rising and Left 4 Dead, nothing more. What, if anything, might it offer to make it worth buying when I already have both of the aforementioned games?

The trailer was great, atleast when it comes to delivering atmosphere and hype still I look forward to the game. I just hope the game can live up to the trailer.

And if you will excuse me, I need to get this clear liquid out of my eyes...
that's the third time you got something in your eye you should go to a doctor to check it...
