No, I dont have any kids, that would be a bit too early for me, i'm 18 years old, so i guess I would be too young for kids yet ;)
I had a friend who became a father at 15 so I try not to judge ;-)
I know what you mean. One of my old classmates had a child when she was 16.

Calling it the best zombie game trailers ever doesn't do it justice. It's one of the best trailers, period.

Well, like books and movies, games are around to cross the boundary. Remember the scandal with Resident Evil and the blood it showed? Remember Manhunt and it's... it's everything? Remember GTA's Hot Coffee? Mass Effect's romance scenario?
Son, I remember back to Pacman promoting drug abuse. :)

Pushing boundaries is fine as long as there are boundaries to push. That's what art does.

[HEADING=2]But[/HEADING] some boundaries are there for a reason, and even if you want to push them, you have to understand that there are people who don't want them pushed, for whatever reason. And Society has to respect that.

From what I've seen so far, this is less of "Let's push the boundaries for realism" and more "Let's push the boundaries so we can show how EDGEY we are". And that turns my stomach.

If you want to play it, sure. Knock yourself out. But I'd rather that such a serious subject matter was dealt with as a mature point, not as a selling point.

Can we remember Sarah Palin's "crosshair"? Whether or not that was deliberate, it was still a damn stupid thing to do, given known tendencies to take the media literally.

or "Grand Theft Rochester" or "RapePlay"? If you want to push those particular boundaries, you've got to make DAMN sure that you're not just feeding the fire ready for the Michael Atkinsons, Jack Thompsons and Carole Liebermans of this world to say "I TOLD YOU SO!".
True, but this is not Rapeplay, it's a dumb zombie game. People will forget it in a year, tops. I doubt seriously that it will phase the video game industry or the people playing it any more than Left 4 Dead 2 phased Louisiana.

But you do leave a valid point. I'm just not sure it is as extreme as you are saying.

Possibly not. But it made me feel distinctly ill. And that's not the sort of thing I (or some others) want to see in an "adult title". If it's a "dumb zombie game", then I'd expect it not to use such an emotional point purely to sell itself.

That was one of the best trailers I've ever seen for a game, almost started to cry.

Here's hoping the games able to follow that.

Found the non slow motion, forward playing trailer a lot better. Dismemberment + reversed footage just comes off as silly and kills the mood the trailer was trying to create.

That trailer made me too sad. But we all know it's something the game isn't even going to try and live up too. Games haven't reached that level of maturity yet

I think video games haven't gotten to the point where they can "masterfully" mix and match themes and tones and mature points like books, movies, etc... can. Most games are focused around a single aspect, whether narrative or gameplay wise. Just look at most of the games by thatgamecompany, their recent game, Journey, is all about loneliness and despair.

From the trailer, I don't think Dead Island is going for an "edgy" feel to it. Dead Island looks to try and put a mature spin on the zombie-survival genre. Time will tell if they succeed (and by god, from this trailer, they better not fuck up), but from what I understand of your post (as I've just woken up, and my brain isn't functioning yet) you're saying that they shouldn't push this boundary because you feel that it's just an "edgy" thing their doing.

Cheesy emo music + zombies spewing blood just doesn't work for me. It feels like two opposite things awkwardly smashed together.

Also, I'm sick of goddamn zombies already! STOPPIT WITH DA ZOMBIES!

Not that they shouldn't push the boundary, (boundaries are there to be pushed) but they should do something with that push. A message other than "Watch out for the kids."

Imagine if you're playing a game, your friend gets hit and then the computer takes control, forces your friend to attack you (while letting him watch) and you have to bludgeon your friend to death before he bites you.

Imagine if you're never sure when that's going to happen, and you're never quite sure if he took a hit...but he's coming towards you.

That's where the boundary should be pushed to, imho. They've done it in Alien Swarm, but never in an FP(S).

If they can do that, I'll retract what I said.

Well, let's hope they can, eh?

Though the cynic in me says "They're going to fuck it up somehow." And the optimist in me says the same thing...

This is most likely just a side story in the game, with many other stories like it in the game. It's a tropical island, a place where everybody is there to relax, and then they're thrust into a situation where previous friends go for their brains. There's potential here for a deep, emotional game, though again, the cynic in me doubt's they'll succeed. Also, I'd watch the IGN rewind of the trailer, it's got some nuggets of info that I find pretty interesting, like the infection or whatever disappearing after the host is dead.

This trailer is a work of genius.

The cinematography, pacing, and framing is simply fantastic- and the way it takes a no-frills tackle on a Zombie Outbreak is beautiful. It's left me as sad as hell.

If the game lives up to this trailer, it'll be one of the highest rated ones of the past ten years.

Wow everyone seems to love this trailer so much... meh. I thought I was sorta melodramatic and the violins really put the cheese over the top for me. A child is dying! Oh no they are all getting killed! Violins! Oh no they where a super happy family! BE SAD! Yeah I got it :p

Don't get me wrong the game might be really good still(I like the location) but I'm not in love with the trailer. They don't show any real gameplay and to me that's the important part of game trailers.

Saw the trailer before heading off to work on a beautiful (if somewhat ruined cos of work) sunday morning. First impression: Wow! Now that`s a trailer. Great dramaturgy, setting a hardcore melodramatic tone that manages to pull quite a few emotional strings, good graphics etc. etc.
Worked...watched the trailer again..second impression: Still good, but being a gamer myself (duh!) I seriously doubt that the same emotional impact will be present in the game. Hopefully I`ll be proven wrong, but to be honest - as good as the trailer is when it comes to setting the mood - I`m just predicting a gaming-experience where 4 people run about screaming obscenities at eachother, fighting over a mop-handle and in the end teabagging eachother when they die.

Or perhaps that part of the game will be made into the movie...
