Don't Expect Friendly Dragons in Skyrim, Says Bethesda

"This is not How to Train Your Dragon, " he said. "This is how to kill a whole bunch of very mean things that have come to kill and hurt people ... Might there be exceptions and nuances to that? Possibly. I wouldn't want to say anything beyond that..."
Doesn't that sound kind of oxymoronic to people besides myself? So there will be friendly-ish dragons in the game? Or dragons that won't "kill and hurt people"? I'd say that's friendly enough!

To be honest, I was hoping for something along the same lines as Dragon Heart. But meh.

I actually prefer intelligent dragons that treat humans more with indifference than anything else. They are so awesome that they don't give two shits about us. As such, they don't mind stepping on a city once in awhile if they have to.

Wyvern. Oh, hey, i just fixed it!

OT: That's quite fine, though. Personally, I never planned on trying to tame a wyvern or befriending one. I'm going to kill them. Over and over again.

When I first saw the article I thought that it goes against what Bethesda have already said about the dragons in the game. I thought at one point they said or hinted at there being dragons that don't want to kill you, and you could possibly talk to. But this bit still leaves some hope:

"Might there be exceptions and nuances to that? Possibly."

But not being able to train dragons and being best buds with them is fine by me.

I am disappointed by this.

Skyrim Dev - "Dragon's fire is like their language, shouts are words you've learned blah blah blah" (Paraphrasing).

Now lets slaughter these majestic beasts!
Well they're not exactly stopping by for tea and biscuits, it's the return of the freaking "World Eater". If that doesn't tell you enough about what his intentions are (and by proxy, his flight), I don't know what would. Perhaps a couple of loading screens following your attempts at hugging one? :p

There'll be a few non-hostile dragons you're gonna be able to interact with rather than punch an axe through, but I understand them totally that they don't want to make the game's goal to be "make dragons and humans get along". It would kinda suck arse to get to the end of the main quest, only to turn all the dragons friendly and kill so much of the joy of the game.

He also talked about Skyrim's Radiant Story system, which adds random encounters to the world. He described a scenario where the player is attacked and killed by bandits on the way to a dungeon. The next time the player walked that road, it might not be bandits; instead, it might be a wizard or a hunter. He said that Radiant Story would allow people to have a unique experience with the game, without it every being obvious what was scripted and what wasn't.

"It's subtle, we don't ever want you to know or notice when you're experiencing something that's got Radiant Story," he explained. "But when you're around the watercooler the next day and everybody's talking about what they did, even if you did the same quest you'll be like 'hey wait a minute, I went to a different dungeon, which one did you go to? Mine had waterfalls.'"
I love how they're talking about a random number generator like it's a revolutionary new feature that'll change video games forever. I still plan on picking up Skyrim, I'm a big Elder Scrolls fan, but I'm really starting to get sick of all this industry bull they keep spoonfeeding us as if we're a bunch of retarded chimps.
Yea, and I can't say that part of the article was too illuminating either.
So are the random encounters just going to be different things attacking you like in New Vegas or will there be all sorts of different types of friendly, unfriendly, and selfish encounters like in Fallout 3?

I don't care if there aren't friendly dragons. The real cool part is going to be when someone comes out with the mod that lets you play as a dragon.

I too still plan on picking this up but for the PC (definitely NOT the ps3) and after they've patched it a couple of times. I'm bot buying another broken Bethesda game.

I don't care one way or another about friendly dragons, but it sounded kind of douchey.

"No friendly dragons" = fine.

"This isn't How to Train Your Dragon" = dismissive douchebaggery on the level of your standard White Wolf employee.

I do, of course, look forward to this innovative concept of random encounters.

Nice "Hobbit" referance.

The fact that the game has Dragons in has already sold this game to me don't care whether they are friendly or hostile.

You know, my comment to stories about Skyrim have mostly been this;

"It's not in there? Don't worry, there'll be a mod for that."

Couldn't they have made it possible to enslave a dragon? Chain it up, stab its eyes out and starve it till you break its spirit and it starts obeying your every command. That way they could have kept the mindless murderer angle they're going for while giving players the possibility to ride a dragon.
I am not sure if I would want to ride a blind, half starved dragon. That seems kind of dangerous.
That would make the game better, your dragon will be weaker than it was before (so the game won't become too easy after you get yourself a dragon) and will rely on your commands for everything. This way you can take full control of it, in stead of just pointing at an enemy and saying "kill this".

Who said anything about taming them? Just use magic to force them into submission.

That gives you:

evil mean dragon + Magic control = Dragon mount.

No friendlyness needed at all.

So they build them up as these majestic creatures and then they're just your enemy because every dragon is born with the urge to kill people?

I think I'm missing something here... if you want to make a character or race interesting or complex, you can't work with stereotypes. I didn't expect a level of detail found in Warcraft's dragons or How To Train Your Dragon plushies, but these just seem like "really cool looking enemies to kill". Which sounds pretty dull to me as a fan of lore and world creation.

Don't dragons usually have very high magic resistance, sometimes even immunity? (at least in the games I've played)

Yes, but aren't you stealing their words and all that magic crap that allows you to beat them even easier? There could easily be somekind of force-into-submission-magic-word-thing amongst them.

I hope?

Please?

[read the title]Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo((((((((
[read the article] Oh oh, you mean taming. Fu?k that, who wants to tame dragons as if they are some pets? I want to serve the dragons. Why can't I WANT to destroy the puny humans? "Possiby" exceptions is enough for me.

I give it one day before they manage to Mod in a friendly riding dragon. Which will be, let us be honest, totally awesome!

Not sure what a friendly dragon would look like though.?

Now I know what to call my Dragon Mount Mod, "How to tame your Dragon". I'll need to take some voice clips from Dragon Heart to make it really good. Sean Connery FTW.
