Yes, because we all believe sensationalist correlational data and opinions gathered from the public as irrefutable proof...

lol, for a moment I thought she was trying to use an opinion poll to justify her reasoning...

That would have made me very upset.

The studies are bunk though, so she can go fuck herself.

Looks like she's doing a 'Thompson' on herself. Make a big enough of a fool of yourself in public, and you not only become a laughing stock, but you get struck off whatever professional register you are on. The funniest thing about this is that she doesn't even realise what's coming.

She knows nothing and I feel sorry for her patients seeking help from a quack.
Seconded.

I was hoping that she'd give a reasonable argument, or failing that, at least give a good one with flaws.

Instead she pulls out more BS.

When.....When you find yourself in a hole, you're supposed to stop digging. This whole situation hurts my head.

It's not surprising that she won't back down now that i think about it. It looks like she's just trying to save face after attracting a lot more attention than she expected.

I thought she was trying to do that too(present an opinion pole as evidence). I was half way through screaming BULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL...LLLLLSHIT before i was finally able to focus and realize that wasn't what she was doing at all.

Those studies are not related in any way to sexual violence, only good ole' fashioned, regular, wholesome violence.

In other words, she doesn't even know what she's arguing about.

And I had to note, when she said;

"When the Columbine murders took place, there were national polls where people voted on what they believed caused the two young men to kill. Media violence ranked high on the list..."

I immediately thought "Who the hell cares about what people voted for?" That doesn't imply the truth, you numbnut.

This is just another, misinformed, media "expert" trying to argue about something that even she doesn't know what. Hell, I'm a better "media expert" than she is, I know what media I'm talking about!

Sorry lady, I don't study rape. It's not something I'm actively interested in, you know.
Are you trying to imply that if someone studies rape it means that they are interested in raping people? Please don't. I'm being serious. I hate that she's spewing this bullshit and calling it science but it is ludicrous to accuse her of being a rapist for studying rape. I don't know what she does as a psychologist, i don't actually know how often she has to deal with rape victims or other issues on that subject, but the very idea your comment sends is horrible. Scientists study things for many reasons, and in the case of rape it would very likely be the simple fact that in order to fix a problem you NEED to understand it. You don't have to like it to study it, but by ignoring something like rape you do not magically make the problem go away. Maybe she truly has good intentions, maybe she really BELIEVES that video games cause violence and she believes it so much that she's letting that belief cloud her vision as a scientist. This makes her a bad SCIENTIST but not a bad person. Don't get the two confused.

It's FOX FUCKING NEWS. As a demographic gamers should have stopped giving a shit about anything they say somewhere between Nine Days in Fallujah and Mass Effect, for they're pulling the typical bullshit that 'correlates' new media and increases in violence / immorality / ect.

It's the same reactionary attitude that refers to the 1950's as 'the good old days', called Rock & Roll the noise of the Devil, blamed Muslims rather than extremists for 9/11, and call Barack Obama a traitor and a terrorist. At this point, their credibility with our demographic is so low that we shouldn't give a damn what they say.

And the fact is, this won't change anything. Fox News has a severe case of groupthink that only hampers their ability to respond reasonably to arguments against them, which is why there hasn't been much videogame-restricting legislation since the ESRB was established. All this will do is get a few more gullible, conservative parents on the bandwagon of the anti-videogame league. Nothing will be changed by this, and within a few months no one will care again.

For the record, I am 16 years old, I play plenty of violent games (Dead Space, Gears of War, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, UT3, AvP, ect) and I am a perfectly well balanced individual. I'm not a druggie, a psychopath, a rapist, or a terrible student. The people who say that I am ill-affected by my choice of medium have no experience with it, only using small sample sizes of already-violent/aggressive kids to try and claim causation to a medium of entertainment that they're threatened by, and as both a demographic and an industry we should perhaps cite some of those cases where extreme-right radio hosts have nearly incited the easily-persuaded to violence and see what THEY say.

Honestly I think it's people like this that give gamers so much opposition, we demand evidence on sight and those that come unprepared and assume that we already know all the latest studies and whatnot, and that may be true for the gamers that are psychologists and go into that area when they get an occupation, but many gamers are not omnipotant beings and what the 'Average Joe' on the street knows, is often what many of us know as well...Though I do hope I am not being a hypocrit here and assuming that. Maybe every other gamer does know that and I am the only one that hasn't dug up all that research and am left in the dark because I didn't expect to be grilled about research on violence and that stuff when I woke up today. Again I ramble on far too long X3
No, no. That's a good point and i think it's fair to say that we often don't have or even care to look for data that supports our side before going into an argument. But then again, if you're going to make a public statement, you should have your citations ready and waiting, you would be foolish not to. I guess she didn't expect to be called out on it and now looks even worse for it?

I second that!

It's so annoying how they keep blaming video games for all the Evils in the world. It's Like they Assume all Videos Games are the same and are about inflicting pain on other people... I bet 99% of these people who Concoct These "studies" have never in their Lives Ever played any sort of Video Game Nor have they ever Spoken to any Gamers. If they Did they'd know us Gamers have more important things to do then Going out and Raping someone.

You know, the most disturbing thing for me is that she reminds me of Delores Umbridge from the Harry Potter books and movies. In her picture she's got the exact same look of superiority, and if you look up her home page, THE ENTIRE THING IS BRIGHT PINK! What is it with willfully ignorant, idiotic, and immoral women and bright pink!

Apparently Miss Lieberman has never met a that she couldn't simply ignore. Really, what kind of quack writes up a study then blames the reader for not already knowing the source material? You ALWAYS cite your sources in research documents. Who gave her a Ph.D.?
I think we know how she got her PhD. Her book describes the process in detail.

She's a psychiatrist, and therefore a medical doctor. Bring this up with the medical ethics board in California with a letter that reads something like:

"Due to her blatant disregard for basic scientific reasoning (as detailed below) I believe that Dr. Lieberman is unfit to practice medicine in California. As such, I urge you to look into the matter." then follow with the details.
