I didn't think MS could misunderstand the pc-gamer market any less than they did with that POS GFWL, but I was wrong. Good lord they are stupid.
Have fun continuing to fail and get "p0wned" by Steam you idiots.

It was fine until the guy misspelled pwn3d. Even Pwned would have been acceptable, but POwned? WTF IS THAT SHIT!

microsoft! Hey you! Do you really want to coincide the entire PC market to steam?

Once again, Microsoft run sweatily along behind the bandwagon!

I swear to God, has this company -ever- been innovative? Or do they just always steal ideas from 2 years ago. And two years is generous, Steam has been doing much of this for nigh on a decade. And the popularity of casual games (Bejeweled, Farmville, ect) has been around for several years now. Maybe their GFWL team was just woken up from a particularly long nap.

That said, I see nothing to worry about in this video. It's clearly not aimed at most people here. Instead, they're trying to capture part of the casual gaming market that is currently divided between Facebook, Apple (iPhone, ect), and free game sites. There basically trying to muscle in on a market that is already full of competitors, and their late out of the gate, bravo Microsoft. We'll always have Steam, which clearly isn't going to have any serious competition any time soon.

Its really not that terrible. No mean to offend, Mr. Chalk, but I think this article is a bit sensational. The medium's evolution will come as people shape it to be, and right now, this is a good stepping stone. Bringing new people into gaming with casual games and a laid back atmosphere such as the one shown here will most likely lead to more people acquiring a taste for good games like Half-Life and Final Fantasy. If anything, this is a fantastic thing for both the industry and gamers, both "hardcore" and "casual". Again, im sorry if i did offend.

Oh wow. It's facebook. Why Microsoft would even attempt to topple the social giant is beyond me. This is never going to sell.

I came into that video thinking that there was no way that a video about Microsoft's plan for PC gaming's future could scar me for life, like you said it would.

I was wrong.

Seriously, they're promoting buying objectively better weapons and things like that? Farmville? Bejeweled?

It's just annoying that the gaming market is shifting towards those who don't really care about gaming, just because that's a larger audience than the people who do care.

EDIT: Also...

I actually applaud Microsoft for this. Causual gamers are cash cows waiting to be milked in over priced micro transactions. As a Golden Age gamer I say this is a great idea since it will mean more money in the video games industry to make better games and make gaming into a more acceptable social activity and less of a sin against moralities like the news media keeps proclaiming.

So a lot of the Hardcore gamers are pissed off, big deal! I was pissed of when the Hardcore audience was formed with the help of the Xbox and thanks to your money games targeted at Golden Age gamers are more awesome then we could ever conceive. Just think of the Casual gamer as more of a giant wallet with money to spread all over the games industry.
What exactly is a "Golden Age" gamer?

This.
They have trouble separating reality and good ideas from super shit ones...
Must be because they have eaten too much 1000 dollar bills :(
Actually I think it's a problem of not know what makes a good idea a good idea.

"Oh, Steam is a goldmine! Let's make it so that people can download off of GFWL!"

Not knowing that the reason people like steam is because it's fast, it's easy, the DRM isn't intrusive, it's relatively bug-free, and you get a lot of sweet deals. GFWL is none of that, and that's why it fails.

"Oh look, Facebook is popular! Let's add social networking to our services! Then our service will be popular!"

The Social Networking ship has sailed already, Microsoft. Noone's going to switch over to your service when all their friends are on Facebook already.

"Zynga is making a fuckton of cash off of microtransactions! Let's add MTs to our games!"

The reason MTs work for Farmville is because it's a casual game, and the kinds of people who play farmville don't know any better microtransactions don't inhibit anyone else's enjoyment of the game. In any kind of core game, adding microtransactions is just going to piss a lot of people off.

It's like instead of coming up with their own ideas, they're just taking the core of ideas that have already been done before, and shoehorning them into their products.

In my opinion this is just another attempt of a worn out company to jump onto the Bandwagon that is the present.

It's really like with the Zune. Microsoft sees a trend is succesfull, loooooooong after it is new and decides that it wants in on it. Unfortunately at the point where any product gets released it's ond stuff already and noone will line up to play

"Microsoft farmlike Expirience" on Launchday.

As long as they are not going for a gritty or realistic look, I'll support it.

I am getting sick of gritty realism in my gaming experience.

*coughs, splutters and dies*

p0wned. WHAT THE FUCK.

I....I guess the casual market would like this kind of thing. And I see the appeal of just jumping into a game and helping out a buddy.

The rest of that avatar bullshit can go die. The social aspect of games like Battlefield 2 is you and a few mates playing a serious session one night, not a casual gamer just strolling and picking off a man 200m away up a tower with an F2000 like that.

........p0wned?!

What exactly is a "Golden Age" gamer?
A Golden Age gamer is essentially a gamer who grew up with games from the old 8-Bit and 16-bit era and prefer games from franchises that started then, not big fans of modern games but willing to praised the exceptional games like Bioshock, God of War, etc and love retro style games.

We're pretty much the idiots keeping Sonic the hedgehog alive, demanding better Final Fantasy's, lining Nintendo's wallets with money, buying almost every 2.5D game, complaining about the FPS genres bland and repetitive nature, we pine for an arcade revival... you get the picture.

I wish I could give a better description but it's like 4am where I am and I'm tired.

i didn't just throw up in my mouth, i just puked all over my keyboard. and you could tell that ending was just like "oh man those real gamers are gonna be pissed!, Don't worry we'll put in some 'gamer game' and be say words wrong, god we're so bloody cool!" So as many have said before me thank FUCK for steam, if they wern't there we would down for the count.

I'll just copy/paste what I said about this earlier:

So... who are they targeting with this?

The casual market is already on facebook, and GFWL is nowhere near as user-friendly, so they won't be using this.
The hardcore PC gamer market isn't exactly on the best of terms with Microsoft for obvious reasons.
And everyone else either doesn't care or just uses Steam.
Any Xbox owners they'd hope to target will have Xbox's, and won't really care. They'll just do the stuff the video showed on their 360's. Unless they're going after the people who'll want to change Xbox stuff on their PC's. In which case thats a pretty specific market to target. Since anyone with a gaming PC will probably be turned off by the look of all of this.

So... yeah, whats their plan, exactly?
Good point..
