Huh? I'm sorry, I was busy preordering Mass Effect 2 for the PS3. What were we talking about?
Honestly, this almost stinks of desperation. Bungie isn't exclusive anymore, Valve isn't exclusive anymore, now they're losing exclusivity for Mass Effect... and this was after pimping the Kinect and claiming it wasn't for core gamers. Now, in the news today, they pull a 180 on the Kinect, claim it's going to be really fun for core gamers, and are outrightly trying to pull spin on how ME2 ONLY works on the 360, damn all other systems, evidently including the PC.
I don't blame them for the damage control attempts. This leaves their core with what, exactly? Gears of War, Fable, and Halo which is now in someone else's hands altogether post-Reach, since Bungie's no longer playing X-Box sidekick. That's more or less it for the exclusives. Five will get you ten the PS3 will see ports of games like Left 4 Dead if the Portal 2 launch goes well for that system, so even back catalogue for the companies they're losing is going to dry up. Since everyone back in 2006 more or less committed to a ten-year race, since we're less than halfway through, losing a lot of their exclusive games and studios does not bode well. Microsoft needs to do more than just spin some PR, though. The old strategy worked; find the companies on the cusp of something amazing, get them under lock and key, and make their products part of the X-Box sales strategy. That they seem to have all but forgotten this is kind of sad.
